The Who’s 1973 “QUADROPHENIA” tour, whose items have been limited to American tours to date. Just recently, “LA FORUM 1973 2ND NIGHT: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES”, which was a memorable virgin recording of the legendary taper Mike Millard, has just been released, but this is also a sound source from the American tour. In addition, for many years, this tour has only items produced entirely from the American schedule, such as “DEFINITIVE PHILADELPHIA 1973” and “DEFINITIVE LARGO 1973”, which are full-length versions of radio sound sources, respectively. I am.
However, the “QUADROPHENIA” tour itself was the first to travel to England for about two weeks from the end of October. If you’re a core enthusiast of The Who, you probably know this fact, but no items have been produced from that UK tour, except for the enthusiasts who even touched the trade sound source in the United States. I had no choice but to catch a glimpse of the tour with the sound source for radio broadcasting.
Of course, the sound source also exists on the UK tour. However, the number of existing audience recordings is limited (even on days when the sound source has not been excavated), and the sound quality is also poor. There are even sound sources that only contain live performances up to the middle stage, such as the New Castle performance on November 6th. And above all, the sound quality of all the sound sources is not good and even CD-R level items have not been released, which seems to tell the whole story.

In such a situation, I couldn’t know the state of the “QUADROPHENIA” tour and the UK schedule unless I made a move (decided) to the trade level sound source, but it was suddenly discovered only recently. It was the Manchester performance on November 1st that surprised enthusiasts all over the world.
The “QUADROPHENIA” tour has been performed twice in the same area, and the sound source for the second day has been around for a long time and can be heard on YouTube. However, when recording the audience on this day, the sound quality was so terrible that it could be said that it was the worst on the UK tour, and it was impossible to hear through to the end. It was a rough quality that I could think of.
In that respect, this first day in Manchester is surprisingly easy to hear. Of course, it’s a typical vintage audience for monaural recording, but it doesn’t feel as rough as before. If the recording equipment of the 1970s captures the live sound of Fu, which is presumed to have been roaring at the venue, if one step is mistaken, it may even become saturated and unbearable roaring sound. The sound source this time is not such a thing, but rather it captures it with a powerful sound image. It’s really powerful, and if you’re a maniac, you might even get excited to hear it.
In addition, the storage condition of the tape is miraculous, and there is no grainy hiss noise. In the same 73 years, if you compare it with the previous Millard virgin work “LA FORUM 1973 2ND NIGHT”, you may feel that the sound source of this time is superior in total, such as ease of listening and stability. I was also surprised that there were few changes to the release. In this way, a sound source of quality that can be heard carefully was finally discovered from the “QUADROPHENIA” UK tour in 1973!

And the performance content is very interesting because there is only the stage of the very early stage, which is the third day of the tour itself with “QUADROPHENIA”. After all, it’s the show the day before the album was released. Moreover, because it is called “QUADROPHENIA” with Pete’s soul, it seems that he is the beginning of the tour from the scene where he explains politely and for a long time before the start of the part.
“Real Me”, which opens the curtain, was played in an explosive momentum, but after that, a happening occurred immediately. Pete can’t start playing “The Punk and The Godfather,” which would normally fall into the snow without a break, and the awkwardness continues. Thanks to that, the hall started to be noisy, but Pete said “shut up!” And resumed. By the way, the next day is played without delay, and the happening here stands out even more.
This scene alone was a very thrilling scene, but this time when I was about to start “Drowned”, Pete’s guitar tuning went crazy. Keith is also trying to connect the place with MC here, but Pete himself has no evidence of retuning, so it seems that the guitar itself was repartitioned from replacement.
The happening that seems to be the beginning of the tour is enough for the document, but the tension of the “QUADROPHENIA” set is very high. I feel like I’m surviving with a spirit, even though I don’t care about such happenings. The performance of “Love Reign O’er Me” was suitable for such a part.

The engine was fully opened in the latter half of the live, probably because of the feeling of liberation after finishing the “QUADROPHENIA” part that was just before the release. If you think about it, the excitement of the big chorus in “See Me, Feel Me” is different from the United States using the arena, and the peacefulness of Manchester’s concert hall is transmitted and it makes me feel relaxed.
And the day of the enthusiastic performance ends with “Magic Bus”, but what the song evolved into a jam and Pete started playing was a free “All Right Now” riff. It’s surprising that this isn’t just repeated, but eventually Roger sings the song. As a matter of fact, this development is a scene that was occasionally seen from the European tour in 1972, but this is the first time that it has been made into a record in this way. It is also valuable that it will be performed at the end of the stage centered on “QUADROPHENIA” in 1973.
“QUADROPHENIA”, which had never been completely biased toward the sound source in the United States, will finally release the first appearance audience recording of maniac madness on the limited press CD from the UK tour. I think this is the live sound source of Fu in 1973 that enthusiasts wanted to hear!
