ザ・フーのレアなアルバム・デモバージョンを８曲収録した本盤が、今週のスペシャル・ボーナスアイテムとして付きます！収録されている内容は、ちょうど「Largo 1976」に収録されたアメリカンツアーが行なわれた時期にリリースされていた当時の新作「Who By Numbers」のデモ・バージョンです。タイミング的アイテム的にも「Largo 1976」には最適のボーナスとして喜んでいただけるでしょう。この音源はネットトレント黎明期にひっそり流通していましたが(最近は見かけないようです)、元々1980年代半ばにテープトレーダー間で流通していたもので、その後のピートの「Scoop」シリーズには収められなかったテイクが収められていました。ピート・タウンゼンドの制作したデモの完成度の高さは周知のことですが、このアルバムについても一人ですべての楽器をプレイし、ほぼバンド・バージョンと変わらないレベルまで仕上げていたことが判ります。オフィシャル・リリースされているバージョンや「Scoop」シリーズに収められているバージョンと聴き比べますと、明らかにランニングタイムや演奏楽器が違います。これらにより、ピートがキーボードで作曲していた人だったことが判るでしょう。また、未発表のインストナンバーが収められている点にも注目です。ピートらしい、フックの利いたキャッチ－なメロディ展開のナンバーばかりで、さすが、ピートと唸らせます。実は、このアルバムレコーディング時のザ・フーは、ロジャーが映画「リストマニア」の撮影に出向いたり、ピートはインドの導師ミハー・ババ訪問を計画したり、ジョンはイギリスBBC制作のベースの教本用のレコーディング、キースはコメディ映画出演と、メンバーばらばらの活動により、解散が噂された時期でした。実際にピートは、キースとは9ヶ月会っていないと公言していたほどです。それがアルバム完成時には見事に元の鞘に納まりました。そんな時期にピートが制作していたこのデモ音源は、再びザ・フーが最強の存在として形を成していく布石となったものと言えるかもしれません。非常に興味深い音源と言えましょう。音質はピートの自宅スタジオにおけるステレオ・サウンドボード録音なので、数度のダビングを経たような質感ではありますが、非常に良好です。また元となった音源はレベルオーバーで歪みが頻発していたのですが、今回のdisc化にあたり、これをピンポイントで丁寧に除去したことで歪みはほぼ完璧に解消されております。WHOファン必聴・必携の一枚です。
