「FALLOUT SHELTER」ツアーこと、ザ・フーが1973年にアメリカを回ったライブ・ツアーからはラジオ放送用ステレオ・サウンドボード録音という副産物が生み出されました。当時台頭してきたアメリカのライブ放送プログラム「KING BISCUIT FLOWER HOUR」で放送する為に録音された音源。1973年のアメリカはロック・コンサートをテレビで放送する手法が始まったばかりであり、ラジオの影響力の方が圧倒的な時代でした。むしろ電波に乗せてライブを放送することはレコード・プロモーションの一環として大きな効果があると考えられていたもの。
ピートが紆余曲折の果てに「TOMMY」を超える大作として生み出した二枚組アルバム「QUADROPHENIA」のプロモーションに繋がることから、グループは「FALLOUT SHELTER」ツアーから二公演でマルチトラック・レコーダーを用いたライブ・レコーディングを行い、KBFHに提供しています。それが同ツアーの定番音源として揺るぎない地位を築き上げた12月4日のフィラデルフィア公演と6日のラーゴ公演。どちらも極めて音質に優れ、しかも最高のライブ・パフォーマンスを収録していたことから定番と化したのです。どちらの完全にオフィシャル・クラスのステレオ・サウンドボード録音であり、おまけにラジオを通して全米中に広められたことで、アナログLP時代から数多くのアイテムが生み出されてきました。

まず12月4日のフィラデルフィア・スペクトラムでのライブを収録した音源ですが、こちらはカラージャケット＆カラービニールという豪華な装丁でリリースされたTMOQレーベルのLP「TALES FROM THE WHO」をきっかけとして瞬く間にファンの間に広まりましたが、高音質ゆえに「TALES FROM～」のコピー盤も大量に生み出されます。皮肉なことにコピー盤の氾濫もフィラデルフィア公演をファンに浸透させるという意味で大きな役割を果たしたことは否めません。
それほど「TALES FROM～」のインパクトは大きく、CDでも同じタイトルと同じアートワークを使ったアイテムが溢れるという現象が起きました。むしろ73年のフィラデルフィアは「TALES FROM～」の名の下で出しておけば万事オッケー。ファンからすれば安心と信頼のタイトルと化していたものです。後には番組の合間で流された各メンバーのインタビューまでカットされずに収録されるようになったのがCDらしいバージョンアップでした。しかし当時のラジオ放送は当初からショーを完全に放送することを考えておらず（番組の時間枠からして不可能）、当然ながら放送を元にしていたことですべてのアイテムはライブ不完全収録という状態でした。

ところが、定番「TALES FROM THE WHO」を一瞬にして葬り去ってしまうような衝撃の発掘が今から十年前にネット上で起こりました。1970年代のアメリカにおけるロック・コンサートの立役者だったビル・グレアムの権利で存在していた放送用録音や映像を「WOLFGANG’S VAULT」というサイトが一気に公開。ウォルフガング・バブルとでも呼びたくなる恩恵を受け、ザ・フー73年ツアー定番の二公演に関してもステレオ・サウンドボード録音の完全版が遂に発掘されたのです。ましてや「TALES FROM～」で聞き倒してきたフィラデルフィア公演がコンプリートに聞けてしまうだなんて。
この発掘を受けて当店から最初にリリースされたのが2007年の「SPECTRUM 1973」。これが翌年に再発されるほどの大ベストセラーを記録。それでもなお絶えることのない再発のリクエストに応えて2015年に三度登場したのが「FALLOUT SHELTER」ツアーのポスターをあしらったリマスター版「PHILADELPHIA 1973」。ところがこれも瞬く間にSold Out。もはや出せども出せども売り切れてしまうフィラデルフィア。そして今回は四度目のリリースとなるのですが、既に「PHILADELPHIA 1973」の時点で音質向上面おいても極められた感があり、今回は音量レベルを上昇させただけに留まっています。
そして完全版が登場してみれば「TALES FROM THE WHO」時代には放送時にカットされたのだと思われていた「Love, Reign O’er Me」がここにもない。果たして演奏されたのか、それとも未収録だったのか物議を醸しましたが、結局は演奏されていないことが発覚しています。それは「Doctor Jimmy」を聞けば一目瞭然。ロジャーの喉が不調に陥っており、ハードなシャウトが要求される「Love, Reign O’er Me」を歌えるような状況ではなかった。そこで同曲をオミットして同じようにシャウトが要求される「Won’t Get Fooled Again」に移ったという訳です。そんなハプニングがあれど、すべてを勢いでカバーするような73年フィラデルフィアの演奏は本当に格別。またしても定番化間違いなしであろう四度目のリリースが実現します！
