世界に名だたる巨大フェスティバルにTHE WHOが参加したのは、今回が初。全７日間のうち６日目の準トリでした。世界的なビッグ・フェスだけに、その模様はプロショットで収録されて放送。本作は、その超極上マスターをダイレクトにDVD化したものです。
“ROCK IN RIO 7”から生まれたプロショットは、さまざまなアーティスト／バンドで“2017年の超決定盤！”と謳われる傑作揃い。本作もその例に漏れず、最新デジタルの画質・音質が凄まじいだけでなく、進化した南米のロック事情を素直に反映したステージ演出・サウンドミックス・カメラワークのいずれもが超一流。このまま公式リリースできる超・極上品なのです。
それだけ進化した南米放送ですが、そこに“ROCK IN RIO 7”ならではの旨みも加わっている。それは超巨大なスペクタクルと、ラテンな大観衆のノリ。まず、何よりも会場がデカい。THE WHOにも近年の野外フェス・プロショットが幾つかありますが、本作は客席が広大なだけでなく、ステージそのものがスペクタクル。真っ暗な闇夜の中を無数のライト乱舞し、デカいスクリーンが曲のイメージを美しく映し出すのです。
もう１つの南米ノリも素晴らしい。サウンドボード音声に大歓声がミックスされているわけですが、ヒットソングの大合唱では巨大な海のように広大な歓声でうねりを演出し、曲間では言葉の１つまでハッキリ聴き取れる声援で臨場感を醸し出す。場面場面で使い分けられる「オーディエンス・ノイズ」は、やや冷静な欧米とはまったく違う“熱量”を伝えてくれる。言い換えるなら、小さなスタジオ・ライヴのような生々しさでありながら、同時に超巨大フェスのスケール感も味わわせてくれる。まさに“ROCK IN RIO 7”だからこそのプロショットなのです。
また、そんな熱気を煽りまくるショウこそが素晴らしい。オフィシャルでも『TOMMY: LIVE AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL』がリリースされたばかりですが、同じ“2017年”であっても中身はまるで違う。オフィシャル新作は、タイトル通り『TOMMY』の再演がテーマで、場所も伝統のロイヤル・アルバート・ホール。それはそれで歴史的な映像作品ではありましたが、本作は観客が望む曲を徹底的にグレイテストヒッツ。ほとんどが『TOMMY: LIVE AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL』とは被らず、公式では観られなかった「My Generation」「Behind Blue Eyes」「See Me, Feel Me」等々の必殺曲がたっぷり。本作のボーナスには北米の“OUTSIDE LANDS MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL”プロショットも付属しますが、そこでも観られない「Substitute」も披露されます。そして、そんな大盤振る舞いに驚喜する南米の“うねり”と生放送のリアリティ……。クオリティ的には完全オフィシャル級ですが、公式作品以上に“熱い”ライヴ作品なのです。

GUNS ‘N ROSESにトリを譲っただけにショートセットなのですが、その代わり（？）本作にはボーナス映像も収録。南米フェスに臨むピート・タウンゼントのインタビュー（ちなみに、このショウはレイチェル・フラー女史との結婚発表から３日後でした）と、NBCで放送された「I Can See For Miles」のスタジオライヴです。
とにかく超極上クオリティにして、どこまでも熱いマルチカメラ・プロショット。“南米のTHE WHO”というだけでも貴重ですが、本作から吹き出す熱演・熱狂はそれどころの話ではありません。近年のプロショットでも格別の１本にして、公式品『TOMMY: LIVE AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL』にすら匹敵する大傑作。どうぞ、輝きを永久に残すプレスDVDで存分にお楽しみください。
