そして本作こそ、そんな「ラインナップ#2」の最強録音。彼らの勇姿はオフィシャル作品『LIVE IN ’84』のボーナス映像にもなっていますが、わずか4曲のみ。それに対して本作はコージーやジョン・ロードのソロまでフル収録したライヴアルバムであり、最強サウンドの名録音なのです。そのクオリティは「まるでサウンドボード」と呼ばれるタイプで、実際にアナログ時代から現在に至るまでサウンドボードとして取引されているダイレクト感たっぷりの名録音。しかも、本作はアナログ時代とはまったくレベルが違う。『FIVE ELEMENTS』で初公開となった新マスターは、既発群よりも明らかに鮮度が良く、各楽器の輪郭もビビッドでディテールも鮮やかなら大歓声も遠く、ヴォーカルにかかるエフェクトまで超鮮明。ゼロ距離感が一層鮮やかに描かれ、「まるでサウンドボード」ではなく「これがサウンドボードじゃない!?」という次元のサウンドだったのです。
本作は、そんな大名盤を更にブラッシュアップしたもの。そのコンセプトは“本物の音”。『FIVE ELEMENTS』では超ビビッドなエッジやダイレクト感は満点でしたが、その“鳴り”は些か軽かった。本作では鋭いエッジはそのままに、本来バンドが奏でていたであろう豊かな中低音の鳴りも感じられる。鋭くド迫力なだけでなく、リッチなサウンドでもあるのです。

これだけでも最強を更新するライヴアルバムですが、本作ではさらに貴重すぎるボーナス・トラックも追加収録しました。それはコージーが所有していた伝説のマスターリールに収録されていたホルストの「MARS」。このリールはロンドンのAUDIO INTERNATIONAL RECORDING STUDIOS LIMITED社製で、ロゴ入りの専用ボックスに入っていたもの。発注者(クライアント)として「EMI」、アーティスト名には「COZY POWELL」、箱の上部には「MASTER」と手書きされていました。
そんな貴重品の中身は、コージーがライヴで使用していた「MARS」の現物。そのため、コージー自身のドラミングは入っていませんが、ソロタイム冒頭から盛り上がっていく「Mars #1」、フリーソロ後のクライマックス・パート「Mars #2」の原音そのものを聴けるのです。かつてギフト盤として大人気となりましたが、最強ライヴアルバムの誕生を祝し、ここに永久保存プレス化を実現させました。

歴史を振り返ってみれば、TYGERS OF PANG TANGから常にツインギターのバンドで弾いてきたサイクスが初めて独り立ちしたのが、本作の「ラインナップ#2」でした。“独りでもイケる!”という驚き・喜び・充実感に溢れていながら、キャリア最大の強敵となるジョン・ロードとしのぎを削るライヴ。それが悪かろうはずがありません。

・4月14日:ストックホルム公演 【本作】

以上、全6公演。このように、最強WHITESNAKEが現存したのはわずか9日間だけ。公式プロショットは最終「4月16日」だったのに対し、本編『DEFINITIVE STOCKHOLM 1984』や本作は「4月14日」でした。
そんな貴重極まるショウを収録した本作は、実に素晴らしいヴィンテージ映像。ビデオカメラが普及し始めた80年代らしく、“表情まで判別できる”とはいかないものの、5人のアクションがしっかりと収まるアングルで、手ブレもほとんどない。安心して熱演ぶりに浸れる93分間です。そして、音声は本編プレス2CDとは別録音で、これがまた素晴らしい。本編では、レア編成のアンサンブルを詳細まで確認できるビビッド・サウンドでしたが、こちらはショウ全体の雰囲気が伝わる“自然な鳴り”といった感じの仕上がり。実際、この映像から音声だけを抜き出したCDRも出回っていたことがあるほどのサウンドです。熱気溢れる「ラインナップ#2」の素晴らしさは、本編プレス2CD『DEFINITIVE STOCKHOLM 1984』でも十分に伝わってきますが、やはり映像の説得力は格別。本当に現場でショウを見ているような臨場感を満喫できます。
そのクオリティで描かれるショウこそが素晴らしく、オフィシャルDVD『LIVE IN ’84』のプロショットとはまるで違う。公式プロショットはテレビ番組用の特別パフォーマンスで、ホテルのカジノで収録されたもの。観客も正装して座っており、カヴァデールも皮肉混じりに「こんばんは、ラスヴェガス!」とジョークを飛ばすほどの普段とはかけ離れた雰囲気。その異様さは公式作品でご覧になった方も多いと思います。それに対し、本作に収められたショウは、ロックファンがギッチリ詰めかけた通常コンサート。しかも、スタジアム級のビッグ・ショウで、彼らが本来いるべきステージの最上級版。熱狂する観客と一体となった本領発揮のライヴが堪能できるのです。
さらに、歴史的に見ると本作の貴重度はそれ以上。実のところ、ジョン・ロードのソロ・タイムまで見られる“SLIDE IT IN TOUR”の完全映像は、本作1本だけなのです。前述した通り、この時期はビデオカメラが普及し始めた頃で撮影自体が少ない。「ラインナップ#1」のフル映像は1つも見つかっていません。「ラインナップ#3」には“スーパーロック’84”や“ロック・イン・リオ’85”といった強力プロショット映像もあるものの、それらはジョン・ロード脱退後なのでキーボード・ソロがなく、フェス用のショート・セット。人気絶頂だった欧州だからこそフルスケールのライヴが行われ、本作こそが唯一映像。キーボード・ソロのほかにも、コージー・パウエルのソロ・タイムで回転花火に熱狂する観客や、サイクスが独りで弾く「Here I Go Again」「Fool For Your Loving」など、他の映像では望むべくもない見所の連発なのです。
