2016 WHITESNAKE returned to “THE GREATEST HITS Tour” on Masamichi (?) After completing the purple reconstruction project. Introducing a new excavation video that allows you to experience the scene where his ally Adrian Vandenberg also jumps in.
This work was shot at the “August 11, 2016 Tilburg performance”. A spectacular audience shot recorded overnight in Adrian’s homeland of the Netherlands. This is David Coverdale in 2016. The tour started about two months after the controversial Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. The Tilburg performance of this work was the 17th performance of the “Europe” leg in the middle stage.

It’s not clear if it was the fans or the people involved in the venue / band who actually shot this film, but the fact that “related person shots” are more appropriate than the word “audience shots” cannot be moved. It was thought that Adrian at that time retired and became a painter, but in fact it was the timing when he had already formed VANDENBERG’S MOON KINGS. The guitar work makes me feel the same sharpness as in the 80’s.
At that time, this show was announced as “the last performance in the Netherlands”. Actually, it wasn’t the last time for the “FLESH & BLOOD Tour” because the performance in the Netherlands was realized (I have the impression that Coverdale in recent years has hinted at retirement every time he visits Japan, but the same is true in other countries), but “This is the same. This work may have been born because of the thought and concentration of “the last”. It’s the ultimate quality video that is so luxurious. そんな本作が撮影されたのは「2016年８月11日ティルブルフ公演」。エイドリアンの故国オランダでの一夜で記録された絶景オーディエンス・ショットです。デヴィッド・カヴァデールの全キャリアを追っている当店としては、“THE GREATEST HITS Tour 2016”も当然のようにリアルタイム・レポートをしてきましたが、それらはことごとくライヴアルバム。（意外にも）映像作は今回が初登場となりました。初とは言っても５年前でもありますので、改めてツアー・スケジュールからショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが2016年のデヴィッド・カヴァデール。物議を醸したロックの殿堂セレモニーから約２ヶ月後にツアーを開始。本作のティルブルフ公演は、中盤となる「欧州」レッグの17公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで撮影された本作は、目も醒める絶景オーディエンス・ショット………です、たぶん。いきなり気弱になってしまいましたが、それほどまでに衝撃的な絶景なのです。何しろ、超アップ＆高画質の連続。開演の瞬間、１階アリーナ席を一望するシーンがあるのでステージ中央を真正面に据えた遠景ショットだと分かるのですが、それは照明が付いた一瞬だけの事。証明の光度でステージとの距離感／焦点を確認したら、すぐさま後はグイグイグイグイとズーム。カヴァデールのバストアップが画面いっぱいになるほどの果敢なズームになるのです。日進月歩な機材の進化とシンクロするオーディエンス・ショットなのですが、５年前にこれだけのズーム力と画質を両立する機材があっただろうか……思わずカタログが頭をよぎるほどの異様な高画質が目の前に広がるのです。
しかも、超・安定。ステージ全景を一望するサイズに引いても、カヴァデールの歯並びがハッキリ分かるほど寄っても、微塵もブレない。いかに手ブレ防止機能が話題となった時期とは言え、これほどの安定感は三脚を使っているのは間違いなく、その安定感のまま、右へ左へと激しく移動するカヴァデールを画面中央に捉え続ける。もちろん、各曲のソロ等、他メンバーの見どころも逃さないわけで、ビシッとした安定感とアクティヴなカメラワークの両立は、そんじょそこらのオーディエンス・ショットでは考えられません。
そう、本作のクオリティから沸々と思うのは「まるで関係者ショット」。あえて遠方にカメラを据えることで遮蔽物をゼロにし、ステージのあらゆるポイントを見放題。その上で周囲の視線を気にしない特権が三脚を使う安定感を可能にし、ショウ運びを熟知しているからこそ見どころを逃さない。実際に本作を撮影したのがファンなのか会場／バンドの関係者なのかは判然としませんが「オーディエンス・ショット」という言葉よりは「関係者ショット」の方がしっくり来る事実は動かしようがないのです。
それほどまでの映像美で描かれるのは、ツアータイトルに偽りなしのグレイテスト・ヒッツ。ジョエル・ホークストラ／ミケーレ・ルッピ加入後の映像と言えば、公式作『THE PURPLE TOUR』が一番有名ですので比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。ツアーのコンセプトが違うのでセットが異なるのも当然。「★」印ナンバーもお馴染みの名曲ではありますが、ジョエル＆ルッピによって染め変えられたバージョンですし、それを極上クオリティで目撃できる映像は意外に貴重だったりもします。そして何より、エイドリアン・ヴァンデンバーグ。ショウ終盤に登場し、「Here I Go Again」「Still of the Night」の２曲で共演するのです。当時のエイドリアンは引退して画家になったとも思われていましたが、実はすでにVANDENBERG’S MOONKINGSを結成していたタイミング。そのギターワークは80年代と変わらぬキレを気亜kせてくれるのです。
当時、このショウは「最後のオランダ公演」と告知されていました。実際には“FLESH & BLOOD Tour”でもオランダ公演が実現したために最後ではなかった（近年のカヴァデールは来日の度に引退を仄めかしている印象がありますが、他国でも同じよう）ですが、「これが最後」という思いと集中力があったからこそ本作が生まれたのかも知れません。それほどまでに贅を尽した究極クオリティの映像なのです。オーディエンス・ショットの可能性、限界にまで思いが至る凄まじい映像作品。どうぞ、心ゆくまでじっくりとご堪能ください。
