VIXEN is a famous band called “Women’s version of BON JOVI”, which has musical skills, sense, and a unique beauty. Introducing an original recording that proves that they were “real”.
What is recorded in this work is “February 22, 1989 Nottingham Performance”. It is a superb audience recording that tells the whole story. They didn’t leave an official live board in the golden age, but this work is a great historical decision board to heal the dryness. The reason for being the decisive board is the sound quality and performance, but in fact, the feeling of the times is also an important factor. This is VIXEN in 1988/1989. After releasing their debut work “VIXEN”, they started their US tour. With that momentum, we expanded from Europe to Japan. The Nottingham performance of this work was the 35th performance of such a “European” leg. This European Tour is their first overseas tour and their first trip to the UK. It’s a live album that mixes the passion of Britain who witnessed VIXEN for the first time and their passion who knew the size of the world across the ocean.
This work recorded at such a historic site is a famous recording during the famous recording that represents the early VIXEN. After all, it was the master craftsman “Crazy S.” who worked on this work. A great British man who left a lot of finest recordings in the mid / late 80’s, this work is a brand that was digitized directly from the original cassette. In fact, the sound is amazing. Anyway, it is very thick and sticks tightly. It’s an original master handed over from the person who recorded it, so I’m not at a loss, but the core and clear details that are approaching without a sense of distance are on par with a sound board. That’s right. It’s so powerful that there are moments when it overpeaks in the early part of the opening “Charmed Life”, but that also improves by the middle of the song. After that, you can fully enjoy the de-class direct sound that goes on the ground like a “sound board”.

そんな本作に記録されているのは「1989年２月22日ノッティンガム公演」。その一部始終を伝える極上オーディエンス録音です。彼女たちは黄金時代に公式ライヴ盤を残さなかったわけですが、本作はその乾きを癒すのに絶好の歴史的決定盤なのです。決定盤たる所以はサウンド・クオリティや演奏にあるものの、実はむせ返る時代感も大事な要素のひとつ。その意味を説明するためにも、まずは当時のスケジュールからショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1988年／1989年のVIXEN。デビュー作『VIXEN』をリリースした彼女たちは全米ツアーを開始。その勢いを駆って欧州→日本へと進出していきました。本作のノッティンガム公演は、そんな「欧州」レッグの35公演目もあたるコンサートでした。この欧州ツアーは彼女たちにとって初めての海外であり初渡英。VIXENを初めて目撃した英国と、大洋を渡って世界の広さを知った彼女たちのパッションが交錯するライヴアルバムなのです。
そんな歴史的な現場で記録された本作は、初期VIXENを代表する名録音中の名録音。何しろ、本作を手掛けたのはかの名匠“Crazy S.”氏。80年代中期/後期に極上録音を大量に残した英国の偉人ですが、本作はそのオリジナル・カセットからダイレクトにデジタル化された銘品なのです。実際、そのサウンドは驚異的。とにかく極太でド密着。録音した本人から譲られたオリジナル・マスターだから迷いはしませんが、距離感など微塵もなくガンガン迫ってくる芯と克明なディテールはサウンドボード並……と言いますか、そんじょそこらFM放送も蹴散らす凄まじさ。あまりにもパワフルなためにオープニング「Charmed Life」の序盤でオーバーピークになる瞬間もありますが、それも曲の中盤に差し掛かる頃には改善。その後は「まるでサウンドボード」を地で行くド級のダイレクト・サウンドが存分に楽しめるのです。
そんなスーパー・サウンドで描かれるのは、初期だからこその激レア曲もたっぷりのフルショウ。ここでセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『VIXEN』の全12曲（CDボートラ含む）のうち８曲が大盤振る舞いされ、さらに後の『RARE VINTAGE』まで未発表だった「Big Brother」も披露されている。そして、それ以上に初期ムードを醸しているのが数々のカバー曲。バンドのデビュー期はオリジナル曲の認知が低いために有名なカバー曲で会場を盛り上げるのが常道で、そのセレクトがバンドの本質をえぐり出したりもする。後々、オリジナルと差し替えられていくカバーは初期の醍醐味でもあるのです。そして、VIXENの場合はタイニー・ブラッドショー（と言うかヤードバーズ）の「Train Kept A-Rollin’」や日本では八神純子の「パープルタウン」としても有名なレイ・ケネディの「You Ought To Know By Now」。さらにテッド・ニュージェント（作曲はブライアン・アダムス）の「(Where Do You) Draw the Line」を熱演していく。スタンダードだけではない選曲も、オリジナル以上に身体に馴染んだアグレッシヴな演奏も極上サウンドで楽しめるのです。
そして、そんなセット以上に熱いのが現場感。言うまでもなく彼女たちは美貌輝く美女ぞろいなわけですが、演奏力も超一流。その実力を目の当たりにした英国キッズの熱狂がえらくリアルなのです。もちろん、最初からそれなりに盛り上がってはいるのですが、それもどこか物見遊山風。ド派手なルックスにお気楽に声援を送っている感じなのですが、１曲また１曲とタイトにビシビシと決めまくる演奏にぶちのめされ、その声援が本気になっていく。そしてパワフルなドラムソロ、テクニカルなベースソロを体験した辺りではすっかり虜になっているのです。
分かりやすく言いますと、最初は「姉ちゃん達。いいぞー！」だった声援が「おぉ、こいつらスゲェ」に変わっていく。「I Want You To Rock Me」のコール＆レスポンスの凄さと言ったら……。耳の肥えた英国野郎共を力ずくで納得させ、従えさせる。まるでハリウッドの娯楽映画のような見事なカタルシス。そんな現場を極上体験できるライヴアルバムなのです。
ド級のサウンド・クオリティだけでも黄金時代VIXENを代表するライヴアルバムですが、さらに初期ならではのレア曲、歴史的なムードもたっぷりとパンパンに詰まった１枚です。歴史的な名作ひしめく名匠“Crazy S.”氏のコレクションでも格別な“極めつけの大傑作”。どうぞ、思う存分お楽しみください！

そんな本作に収められているのは、２つのTV番組。「1989年デュッセルドルフ公演」のマルチカメラ・プロショットをメインに、2004年の再結成イベントを特集したVH1の特番“BAND REUNITED”をボーナス収録した１枚です。それぞれ個性も意味も大きく異なりますので、個別にご紹介していきましょう。
【メイン：1989年デュッセルドルフ公演（約43分）】
まず登場するのは、本作のメインとなるライヴ映像。本編『ROCK CITY 1989』解説の日程で言うところの「欧州」レッグの５公演目である「1989年１月５日デュッセルドルフ公演」のマルチカメラ・プロショットです。デビュー時代の貴重なプロショットなわけですが、クオリティも素晴らしい。当時のTV番組を録画したエアチェックだけにオフィシャル級とまでは言えませんが、ダビング痕のないマスター鮮度は絶品で、マルチカメラのカット割りもプロフェッショナルなサウンド・ミックスも鉄壁です。
そして、その光景こそが凄い。女性を言い訳にしない技巧派ぶりは『ROCK CITY 1989』でも十二分に伝わりましたが、映像のインパクトはさらに絶大。全身黒レザーに身を包み、巨大耳かきの綿毛のようなブロンドを振り乱してタイト極まりないHR/HMを繰り出していく。メロディ自体は親しみやすくキャッチーなのに「ポップとは呼ばせない」と言わんばかりのアグレッションやパワーを振りまいているのです。
放送枠に沿った43分という尺は物足りなくはあるものの、えらくパワフルなロキシー・ペトルッチのドラムソロや、チョッパーやビリー・シーンばりのタッピングまで交えたシェア・ペダーセンのベースソロもばっちり。本編『ROCK CITY 1989』では聴けないレア曲「One Night Alone」もマルチカメラ・プロショットで楽しめます。
【ボーナス：2004年“BAND REUNITED”（約42分）】
続いて収録されているのは、上記から15年後の2004年に放送されたTV番組。VIXENはメンバーを入れ替えながら活動再開と休止を繰り返してきたわけですが、2004年にはオリジナル・メンバーによる一夜だけの再結成が実現。その経緯とステージをフィーチュアした特番“BAND REUNITED”を収録しています。
こちらは21世紀放送だけあってオフィシャル級プロショットなわけですが、クオリティ以上に注目なのが番組内容そのもの。番組VJがメンバー１人ひとりの元を訪れてインタビュー。想い出や近況を聴き出しながら再結成を打診し、実際のステージへと向かっていくドキュメンタリー仕立てなのです。その姿が最高。すっかりお母さんとなって「今は２歳の子供のためだけに歌っている」と笑うジャネット、変わらぬ美貌でバンドの歴史を語るジャン、雑貨店（？）で働きつつBUBBLEについても語るシェア、豪邸の庭で突撃取材にビックリする顔が普通のオバサン（笑）なロクシー。やや「あのヒトは今」的ではありますが、４人それぞれに違った輝き方が面白かったりもするのです。
久々の再会を果たしたスタジオで歓談し、リハーサルを重ね、少しずつ「ミュージシャン」の顔になっていく４人。最後はもちろん再結成ステージ。２曲「Edge Of A Broken Heart」「Rev It Up」を演奏するのですが、駆けつけたファンの熱気も感動的なら、番組冒頭で「普通の人」だったのがウソのように輝きを取り戻したパフォーマンスも素晴らしい。ロック史にはさまざまな再結成が繰り返されてきましたが、その実態を垣間見るような傑作番組なのです。
