In recent years, the underground sound source “Kinnytape” has been a hot topic among Western music rock enthusiasts. During the 70’s and 80’s, Japanese Western music enthusiasts watched a number of historical live stages performed overseas and recorded on high quality cassette tapes. The treasured collection is seeing the light of day. And a great sound source was found here again.
This time, it was performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London on September 20, 1983, inscribed on a metal cassette that was said to have the best sound preservation and accuracy in the cassette tape at that time, It was a complete version of the “ARMS Benefit Concert”, a benefit concert in which Clapton, Beck, and Paige, the first and last guitarists of all time, stood on the same stage! That high-quality stereo audience recording has been unearthed!
ARMS is an acronym for “Action Research into Multple Sclerosis,” which translates directly into “Survey on treatment measures for multiple sclerosis”. Multiple sclerosis is said to be an incurable disease. Over time, muscles throughout the body become hardened, and eventually the involuntary muscles stop and die. It is said that the cause is unknown, and it suddenly develops regardless of the genetic constitution. Ronnie-affiliated musicians gathered and held a concert to raise funds for a research institute for the treatment of the disease to save Ronnie Lane, a former Phases bassist who developed the disease in 1977. It was a concert that donated everything.
Ronnie Lane’s wife turned to Pete Townshend of The Who, Ronnie’s best friend musician, to organize the concert. However, at this time, Pete faced the crisis of band survival, family collapse and divorce, and was immersed in alcohol and drug addiction to escape the stress. So Pete approached Ronnie’s common friend, Eric Clapton, to talk to him. Ronnie’s thoughts on Clapton agreed, and producer Grin Johns (Clapton’s albums “SLOWHAND” and “BACKLESS”, The Who’s “WHO’S NEXT” and the Beatles’ “LET IT BE” early versions It was this concert that was organized with the help of the British who produced it.
If Clapton is a concert for Ronnie who is a personality and loved by everyone, he will delight in the audience not only with his own band but also with a luxurious concert of friend musicians who agree with the purpose of the concert We wanted to get it, and we recruited performers who wouldn’t normally be possible. The centerpiece was the four signboards of “The Three Great Guitarists” with Beck and Paige, and the British rock star Steve Winwood, who once worked with Blind Face. Clapton himself wanted to co-star with all three Yardbirds guitarists. The backing men who supported it were members of the Rolling Stones, Faces and other talented musicians who have been active in the British rock scene for many years (see credits for member details). The talks were held by Clapton himself and Grin Johns. It was surprising that Crapton, who had been out of business, invited Paige after a case in 1965, where Paige provided a private session with Clapton without notice to Immediate Records. Beck and Winwood immediately agree. Rod Stewart, who heard the story, offered to appear, but Clapton was angry at Rod’s actions, which focused on his solo activities at the end of the Phases and did not care for the band at all. There was also an episode that refused the offer.
コ ン サ ー ト The concerts thus gathered together consisted of a four-part concert in which the first part was a Clapton set, the second part was a Beck set, the third part was a page set, and the encore was an all-star set. The elaborate rehearsals were performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London on September 20, 1983. Ronnie Lane, who was still able to walk at the time, appeared and sang in Encore. This miraculous concert was recorded completely by turning a television on site … That’s what this work is about. Of course, this work is a completely different master from the “THREE YARDBIRDS IN THE HALL” (Beano-023) released by our shop. It is this work that will be released from the original cassette which saw the sun for the first time in 37 years.

However, due to the recording time of the software, it was released as a digest version with only the highlights edited. Since then, it has been reissued on DVD, but the content has not changed since the first release. Finally, in 2019, the release of the broadcast sound source banned the release of the broadcast sound source, but this concert was also made into a CD, but although the number of songs included increased from the video work, it was not a full recording version. In other words, the biggest advantage of this work is that you can listen to parts that cannot be heard in the official work. And the sound quality has been recorded with a quality that can not be thought of as the equipment that went all the way from Japan and brought in. It is very easy to listen with an overwhelming stereo feeling, has a good sound balance, and it can be said that it captures the scale feeling of Royal Albert Hall realistically. Was not included in the official CD. Probably, the song was cut because Winwood was judged to be less popular than the three major guitarists, but these two songs should not be honored. Both songs have Clapton performing a great guitar solo. In particular, the latter is a number that can be said to be a masterpiece of masterpieces even if it is a Winwood solo number. If the song is impressive, so will Clapton’s guitar play. Including these two songs, you will be able to experience a full-length show with this work. That’s why the true shape of this concert became clear.
も ち ろ ん And, of course, you can listen to the individual sets of the three major guitarists who are hard to keep up with and the scene of the three-starring role that the rock fan dreamed of. Clapton is changing from Blackie Strat to a vintage Gibson Explorer original model at Rambling On My Mind. Blues played with this wild tone followed by the power of Cocaine! After that, it featured Andy Fairweather Row, who became the first co-star with Clapton. There is something deeply impressive to think that this co-star was connected after the 1990s. Clapton remains in the Wynwood set and is fully supported. Gimme Some Lovin ‘, one of the great blue-eyed souls of his pen, has Clapton performing an awakening riff on a sunburst strat. Jeff Beck at the time established his own fusion music. The members of the album “THERE AND BACK” are playing back with sharp and wild play. He closed the set with his debut song Hi Ho Silver Lining, which was his idol solo debut in ’68. The appearance of playing rare numbers masochisticly is also funny. Of course, the vocals are taken by Beck himself while being shy. In the next set of pages, he was willing to participate in the call from Clapton, but at the time Paige lost the bonzo and fell into drug addiction from the shock that disbanded ZEP, and his fingers did not move properly due to the effect Condition. Paige, who had just released a soundtrack solo album “DEATHWISH て” with a resurgence in mind, made the highlight of performing ZEP’s famous song “Stairs to Heaven” as an instrumental addition to the number from that album ( The vocal song is performed by Winwood.) And at the all-star encore, the miraculous co-starring of the three major guitarists (+ Wynwood) will be realized. His repertoire was chosen just because Bammouth was a Clapton, but the extravagant scene of Beck playing Layla’s seven-phrase phrase appears in this concert’s uniqueness. Finally, Ronnie Lane appears. His vocals will be heard on his favorite British country trad song Goodnight Irene, which Clapton has often discussed. Thanks to these friends, Ronnie has been able to survive for 14 years from here. It was a great historic concert where you could feel the deep friendship of the British Rock world.

ここ数年、洋楽ロックマニアの間で話題沸騰のアンダーグラウンド音源「キニーテープ」。70年代から80年代にかけて、日本人洋楽ロックマニアが海外で行なわれた数々の歴史的ライブステージを現地で鑑賞し、高品質カセットテープに録音していました。その秘蔵コレクションが一気に日の目を見ている状況です。そしてここにまた凄い音源が発掘されてしまいました。
今回、当時のカセットテープでは最も音の保存性、精度に優れていたと言われたメタルカセットに刻まれていたのは、1983年9月20日、ロンドンのロイヤル・アルバート・ホールで行なわれた、史上初にして最後となったクラプトン、ベック、ペイジの三大ギタリストが同じステージに立ったベネフィット・コンサート「ARMSベネフィット・コンサート」の完全版だったのです！その高音質ステレオオーディエンス録音が発掘されてしまったのです!!
【“三大ギタリスト揃い踏み”奇跡のステージをリアルに伝えるステレオオーディエンス録音】
先般のクイーンのハマースミスオデオン1979の時のようにテンションが上がってしまって申し訳ありません。しかし、これまた歴史的な音源であり、しかも日本人が現地にてステレオ録音していたという奇跡的な音源であるためお許しいただきたいと思います。「ロックファンなら誰もが待望しながら、実現不可能と思われていたコンサート」だったのです。長年のブリティッシュロックファンの方なら、これがいかに歴史的な事だったのかご理解いただけると思いますが、そうでない方のためにも、イチからこのARMSプロジェクトの経緯と概要をご説明していきましょう。
ARMSとは、「Action Research into Multple Sclerosis」の頭文字を取ったもので、直訳すれば「多発性硬化症への治療対策調査行動」となります。多発性硬化症は不治の病と言われ、時間の経過とともに身体じゅうの筋肉が硬化していき、終には不随意筋である心臓が止まり死に至ります。原因不明と言われ、遺伝体質にも関係なく突発的に発症する病気です。77年にこの病を発症した元フェイセズのベーシスト、ロニー・レインを救うため、この病気の治療研究機関への援助資金調達のためにロニーに所縁のあるミュージシャンたちが集まってコンサートを開き、その収益をすべて寄付したコンサートだったのです。
コンサートの企画開催に際しては、ロニー・レインの奥さんがロニーの親友ミュージシャンであるザ・フーのピート・タウンゼンドに援助を求めました。ところがこの時期のピートは、バンドの存続危機、家庭崩壊・離婚の危機に直面しており、そのストレスから逃れるためアルコールとドラッグの中毒に陥っているという状況でした。そのためピートはこの大役をロニーの共通の友人でもあるエリック・クラプトンに振るべく話を持ちかけました。ロニーの身を案じたクラプトンがそれを快諾し、プロデューサーのグリン・ジョンズ（クラプトンのアルバム「SLOWHAND」や「BACKLESS」、ザ・フーの「WHO’S NEXT」やビートルズの「LET IT BE」の初期バージョンをプロデュースしたイギリス人）の協力を得てオーガナイズしたのがこのコンサートだったというわけです。
クラプトンは、人格者で誰にも愛されているロニーのためのコンサートであるならば、自身のバンドだけによるコンサートではなく、コンサートの趣旨に賛同する友人ミュージシャンを集めた豪華なコンサートでオーディエンスに喜んでもらおうと考え、普段では有り得ない出演者を募りました。目玉は自身とベック、ペイジを伴った「三大ギタリスト」＋かつてブラインド・フェイスで共に活動したブリティッシュロック界のスター、スティーヴ・ウィンウッドの4枚看板でした。クラプトン自らが、歴代のヤードバーズのギタリスト三人の共演を望んだのです。それを支えるバックメンとして集まったのは、ローリング・ストーンズ、フェイセズのメンバーを始めとするブリティッシュロック界で長年活動してきた実力派のミュージシャンたちでした（メンバーの詳細はクレジットをご覧ください）。出演交渉はクラプトン自身とグリン・ジョンズが行いました。65年の一件（ペイジがクラプトンとのプライベートセッションの音源を無断でイミディエイト・レコードに提供した）以来、絶交していたクラプトンがペイジを誘ったことは驚くべきことでした。ベックとウィンウッドは即座に快諾。また、この話を聞きつけたロッド・スチュワートは自ら出演を申し出たのですが、フェイセズの末期に自身のソロ活動に注力し、一切バンドを顧みなかったロッドの行いに憤怒していたクラプトンが彼の申し出を断ったというエピソードもありました。
そうこうしてメンバーが結集したコンサートは、第一部がクラプトンのセット、第二部がベックのセット、第三部がペイジのセット、そしてアンコールがオールスターによるセットという四部構成とされました。そして念入りなリハーサルを行い実現したのが、83年9月20日、ロンドン、ロイヤル・アルバート・ホールでの公演だったのです。当時はまだ歩行が可能だったロニー・レインもアンコールで登場し、歌いました。そんな奇跡のコンサートを現地でテレコを回し完全収録していた……それが本作なのです。もちろん本作は、当店が過日リリースした「THREE YARDBIRDS IN THE HALL」(Beano-023)とは完全別マスターです。このたび37年ぶりに日の目を見たオリジナルカセットからの堂々リリースとなるのが本作なのです。
【オフィシャル作品では聴くことのできないパートを含む奇跡のコンサートの完全版】
このコンサートはロック史におけるエポック的なイベントであったことから、当時オフィシャルではVHSビデオとレーザーディスクでリリースされました。しかしソフトへの収録時間の問題から、ハイライト部分のみを編集したダイジェスト版としてリリースされたという背景がありました。それ以降DVDでリイシューされましたが、収録内容は初回のリリース時と変わっていません。ようやく2019年になって放送音源のリリース解禁により、このコンサートのCD化も実現しましたが、映像作品よりも収録曲は増えたものの、完全収録版というわけではありませんでした。つまり本作ではオフィシャル作品では聴くことのできないパートも聴けるということが最大のメリットなのです。そして音質の方は、日本からはるばる出かけて行って持ち込んだ機材と思えないほどのクオリティで収録されています。圧倒的なステレオ感を伴って非常に聴き易く、サウンドバランスも良好で、ロイヤル・アルバート・ホールのスケール感をリアルに捉えていると言えるものです。オリジナル・カセットだからこそ加工する必要もなく、質感もバランスも極めてナチュラルなのです。 このサウンドは是非スピーカーから大音量を出して聴いていただきたいと思います。そうすれば正にロイヤル・アルバート・ホール、フロア席の真ん中にいたような感覚を味わうことができるでしょう。
●オフィシャル作品では聴くことのできない曲（オフィシャルCDとの比較）
昨年リリースされた放送音源CDでもまだ聴くことのできない曲が本作には含まれています。エリック・クラプトンのセット、ジェフ・ベックのセット、ジミー・ペイジのセット、そしてオールスターによるアンコールはさすがに全曲がリリースされましたが、スティーヴ・ウィンウッドのセットでの

がオフィシャルCDには未収録だったのです。恐らくは三大ギタリストに比べ、ウィンウッドの人気が劣ると判断されて曲がカットされたのでしょうが、この2曲をあなどってはいけません。両曲ではクラプトンが素晴らしいギターソロを披露しているのです。特に後者はウィンウッドのソロナンバーにあっても名曲中の名曲と言えるナンバー。歌も感動的なら、クラプトンのギタープレイも同様です。この2曲を含み、本作にて一気貫通のフルショウを体験できることになりました。それでこそこのコンサートの真の姿が明らかになったと言えるでしょう。
そして、もちろん甲乙付け難い三大ギタリストの個々のセットとロックファンが夢見た三人共演のシーンが聴きものです。クラプトンはRambling On My Mindでブラッキー・ストラトからヴィンテージのギブソン・エクスプローラ・オリジナルモデルにチェンジします。このワイルドなトーンでプレイされるブルースと続くCocaineの迫力！その後は、クラプトンとは初の共演となったアンディ・フェアウェザー・ロウをフィーチャー。この共演が90年代以降に繋がっていったと考えると感慨深いものがあります。ウィンウッドのセットではクラプトンがそのまま残り、全力でサポートしています。彼のペンによるブルーアイドソウルの一大名曲Gimme Some Lovin’では、クラプトンがサンバースト・ストラトで目の覚めるようなリフを奏でます。当時のジェフ・ベックは独自のフュージョン・ミュージックを確立した時代。アルバム「THERE AND BACK」のメンバーをバックにシャープかつワイルドなプレイを披露しています。セットを締めたのは、68年にアイドル的にソロデビューした時のデビュー曲Hi Ho Silver Lining。レアなナンバーを自虐的に演奏する姿も微笑ましいものです。もちろんボーカルは、照れながらベック自身がとっています。続くペイジのセットですが、クラプトンからの声掛けに喜んで参加した彼でしたが、当時のペイジはボンゾを失いZEPを解散させたショックからドラッグ中毒に陥り、その影響から指がまともに動かない状態でした。再起を賭けてサントラのソロアルバム「DEATHWISH Ⅱ」をリリースしたばかりだったペイジはそのアルバムからのナンバーに加え、ZEPの名曲「天国への階段」をインストで演奏するというハイライトを作っています（ボーカル曲はウィンウッドが友情出演）。そしてオールスターのアンコールにて、三大ギタリスト（＋ウィンウッド）の奇跡の共演が実現します。バンマスがクラプトンだっただけに、彼のレパートリーが選ばれていますが、逆にLaylaの7連フレーズをベックが弾くという贅沢なシーンが現出するのは、このコンサートならではの妙味でしょう。最後にはロニー・レインが登場。彼の好みでもあり、クラプトンもよく取り上げたブリティッシュカントリー・トラッドソングGoodnight Ireneでボーカルを聴かせます。この仲間たちのおかげもあって、ここから14年間生き長らえることができたロニー。ブリティッシュロック界の厚い友情をも感じることができる一大歴史的コンサートでした。
とにもかくにも結果的に三大ギタリストが同じステージに立ったという機会は後にも先にもこの時だけ。その歴史的なコンサートの良質ニューマスターが大発掘です。この新発掘の喜び、永久に残すプレス２CDで心ゆくまで存分に味わい尽くしてください。
