What is engraved in this work is “May 20, 1984 San Diego Performance”. It is the excellent audience recording. In the “1984” era, no full sound board was left while producing a masterpiece that brilliantly shines in rock history. For that reason, enthusiasts have long sought the best audience recordings and encouraged numerous new discoveries and upgrades. This work is at the forefront of such history. It is a live album that can be called “the last answer in 2020”. On the other hand, this work was a performance in the home country. The reason why it is so big is its length. “MONSTERS OF ROCK TOUR” is a festival format where many bands appear, and the headliner is AC / DC. On the other hand, the US tour is a prominent protagonist, and you can fully enjoy the full set. [A masterpiece representing the North American tour] It was late involuntarily, but the sound that conveys such a scene is the life of this work. As a matter of fact, it has been known as a famous recording that represents the tour, but this work is the highest peak board upgraded in two ways. First of all, master freshness. It has been digitized from the 1st Gene Master, which was discovered in recent years, and its freshness is completely different. No distortion or twist is seen, and the unstable stereo feeling is stable. Above all, the clear and clear air makes you feel as if the position itself is several tens of meters closer than the conventional master. As a matter of fact, at the beginning of the performance, I feel like “Is there a little distance?”, But it becomes more and more direct during the first song “Unchained”.And the second point is the meticulous mastering unique to this work. そんな本作に刻まれているのは「1984年５月20日サンディエゴ公演」。その絶品オーディエンス録音です。ロック史に燦然と輝く大名盤を生み出しておきながら、フル・サウンドボードが何ひとつ残されなかった『1984』時代。それだけに古くからマニア達がベストのオーディエンス録音を探し求め、幾多の新発掘やアップグレードを促してきました。本作は、そんな歴史の最先端。「2020年最後の回答」ともいうべきライヴアルバムなのです。当店では、これまでも『MONSTERS OF ROCK 1984（Zodiac 422）』や『MONSTERS OF ROCK SWITZERLAND 1984（Zodiac 423）』『STOCKHOLM 1984（Zodiac 297）』といったプレス名盤達をご紹介してきましたが、本作はそれらとは立つステージそのものが違うのです。その意味をご説明するためにも、まずは当時のスケジュールを振り返ってみましょう。

【欧州では実現しなかった、北米だけのフルスケール・ショウ】
これが1984年のVAN HALEN。大きく２つに分かれており、全米で実施されたバンド単体による“1984 TOUR”と、欧州のみのフェスツアー“MONSTERS OF ROCK TOUR”。本作のサンディエゴ公演は前者に一幕「北米#3」の22公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
実は、ココが大きなポイント。前述したプレス名盤たちはいずれも「欧州」レッグ……つまり、“MONSTERS OF ROCK TOUR”の記録。それに対し、本作は本国公演だったわけです。なぜ、それが大きいかと言えば、長さ。“MONSTERS OF ROCK TOUR”は多数のバンドが出演するフェス形式な上に、ヘッドライナーはAC/DC。それに対して全米ツアーは堂々の主役であり、フルセットがたっぷりと楽しめるのです。実際、『MONSTERS OF ROCK 1984』や『MONSTERS OF ROCK SWITZERLAND 1984』がCD１枚物だったのに対し、本作は約109分の２枚組。その内容もチェックしてみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。1984年の全米限定だった激レア「Girl Gone Bad」も美味しいのですが、それ以上なのがフルスケールだからこそのボリューム。何しろ、このツアーはVAN HALEN栄光の歴史でも絶頂の中の絶頂。それまでとは次元の違う成功に沸くムードは極めてグロリアスで、凄まじい熱狂を受けたバンドのテンションも異常な次元。舞い上がっても舞い上がっても、まだ大観衆が煽り立ててくる。そんな天井知らずなショウにたっっっぷりと浸りきれるのです。
【北米ツアーを代表する最高傑作】
思わず遅くなってしまいましたが、そんな現場を伝えるサウンドこそが本作の命。実のところ、ツアーを代表する名録音として知られてきたのですが、本作は２つの意味でアップグレードした最高峰盤なのです。まず、第１にマスター鮮度。近年になって発掘された1stジェネ・マスターからデジタル化されており、その鮮度はまるで別物。歪みやヨレがまるで見られず、不安定だったステレオ感もビシッと安定。何より、クリアに透き通った空気感によって、従来マスターよりもポジションそのものが数十メートル近づいたかのようにさえ感じる。実のところ、開演時には「ちょっと距離がある？」とも感じるのですが、１曲目「Unchained」の間にどんどんダイレクトになるのです。
そして、第２のポイントは本作独自の細心マスタリング。これがまた、ネット原音とは別物級にアップグレードしているのです。もちろん、無闇矢鱈な音圧稼ぎなどは行っておりません。各音域ごとに鳴りを精査し、それぞれに明度を上げた上でバランスも調整。その結果、薄かった低音がグイッとパワフルになっているのですが、それだけではないところがミソ。普通、低音が強くなると全体的に曇りがちになり、それを何とかしようと高音や打音を無理矢理引き上げがち。結果、耳に突き刺さるパッツンパッツン・サウンド……という失敗がよくある。しかし、本作は高音・中音・低音とそれぞれ精査していますので、低音のド迫力が曇りを引き起こさず、ナチュラルなままディテール微細部の輪郭まで艶やか＆鮮やかなのです。
天を突く全盛の熱狂と、フルセットのド迫力。先日ご紹介した『MONSTERS OF ROCK 1984』も歴史的なフェス現場が眩しかったですが、やはり本場アメリカはケタが違う。その突き抜けたフルショウを最高峰サウンドで描く歴史的大傑作です。他の録音がアップグレードしないとも限りませんが、2020年現在でサウンド／ボリュームの両面併せて頂点に輝く『1984』時代の最高傑作は本作。どうぞ、永久保存プレス２CDでトコトン味わい尽くしてください！
