1977年10月15日に地元のパサデナで行われたこの音源は、元々高音質のステレオ・サウンドボード録音だったがリマスター処理でベースの音がマイルドになってギターの音が際立つようになり、よりクリアなサウンドになっている。1978年2月にリリースされることになるファースト・アルバムは、1977年9月から10月にかけての3週間に渡ってレコーディングされているので、この日のライヴはちょうどレコーディングが終わった時期のライヴだと思われる。ここで聴かれるファースト収録曲のギターソロやコーラスはどれもアルバムテイクに近いアレンジだし「Eruption」も同様だ。ギターの音は生々しいが接触不良のような箇所があったりする。曲によってヴォーカルにエコーが掛かっているのが効果的だし、「Atomic Punk」のエンディングに短いドラムソロがあるのも良い。セカンド・アルバムに収録されることになる「Somebody Get Me A Doctor」はギターソロが長く「D.O.A.」は歌詞が少し違っている。1978年1月にリリースされるシングル曲「You Really Got Me」はアンコールで演奏された。アルバムデビュー直前という時期のベストな選曲のベストなライヴを、高音質のプレスCDで聴けるようになったのは実に嬉しいことだ。ボーナストラック扱いの繃-繧はこの日のリハーサル音源で、こちらも高音質。繃-縲がインストで縺からヴォーカルが入る。「Voodoo Queen」は「Mean Street」の原曲だ。カットインで始まる曲があったり演奏が途中までだったりするものの、貴重なリハーサル音源が聴ける。

『PASADENA ON FIRE』の初回納品分には、ボーナスCD-Rとして『GENE SIMMONS DEMOS 1976』のリマスター・ヴァージョンが付く。『FIRESTARTER』等の高音質の既発盤があるしネットにも上がっているので多くのファンが耳にしたであろう音源だが、高音質ステレオ・サウンドボード録音の本作はリマスター処理でよりクリアな音質になりスッキリとした最高の音像に仕上がっている。キッスのジーン・シモンズのプロデュースで1976年5月にレコーディングされたのがこのデモテープの10曲で、収録時間は32:55だし１枚のアルバムとしても十分に通用する内容になっている。当時はこのタイプの音楽が流行っていなかったという理由もありレコード会社との契約には至らなかったものの、ここに収録されている楽曲の完成度は非常に高い。復活ヴァン・へイレンの2012年の新作『A DIFFERENT KIND OF TRUTH』にはここから4曲もセレクトされている。それは、「She’s The Woman」と、「Outta Space｣というタイトルになった「Let’s Get Rockin’」、「Big River」になった「Big Trouble」、「Beats Workin’」になった「Put Out The Lights」だ。セカンド収録曲とは同名異曲の「Woman In Love」と、「Babe, Don’t Leave Me Alone」の2曲は未発表のまま。全体的にリズムギターは左右に2本でギターソロが中央、コーラスも多重録音されていて非常に厚みのあるサウンドになっている。新作を気に入った新しいファンには是非とも聴いてもらいたい作品だ。
