VAN HALEN in 1982, which sent “DIVER DOWN” to the 3rd place in the United States and made a leap to a higher level. Introducing a 4-disc set of treasured live sets that conveys the two unknown performances.
It was the two consecutive performances at the same venue that were imbued with this work. This is a new excavation audience recording of “August 13 + 14, 1982 Detroit performance”. No records were known so far on both days, but recently it first appeared as the Omoto Master by the same recorder. First, let’s check the position of the show from the tour schedule at that time.

This is the whole picture of “HIDE YOUR SHEEP Tour 1982/1983”. In the 1983 edition, the only South American tour in the history of VAN HALEN and the historic “US Festival” were held, but the actual main tour was in 1982 and all in North America. The Detroit performance of this work was the 19th and 20th performances of “North America # 1” in the first half of the year.
As mentioned above, there were two performances that I couldn’t hear before, but the sound that conveys it is an audience sound with a sharp edge. The sound of both performances is very similar to that of the master by the same recorder. Although it is in the category of vintage recording and has a certain sense of distance, the details are clear enough to offset it. The freshness of the master is what makes it so exciting, and the vividness without distortion caused by dubbing is exciting. While sucking in a generous amount of cheers, a crisp core like a laser beam jumps over it.
It may seem like a scream when you say, “I’m also sucking in cheers,” but that’s not the case. This is also the taste of this work, but it has a sense of scale that a tremendous enthusiasm extends far to the horizon. This is really amazing. Usually, even in audience recordings, the cheers are between songs, and they calm down during the performance. However, the enthusiasm does not stop for this work. Of course, during the performance, it dropped a little, but it continued to spring up, as if it was an AM broadcast that failed to lower in the mix while overdubbing the loud cheers. And, the performance sound and Dave’s vocal that cut through such a big cheer easily. It is a recording that you can enjoy live performances while feeling how popular VAN HALEN was at that time. Moreover, this work further brushes up such an original sound. As a matter of fact, the treble that was too tight for the original sound was relaxed and the overall balance was adjusted. We have realized a sound that you can immerse yourself in through the two performances.
The sharp sound is drawn with a full show that concentrates the taste of the original VH. Speaking of “HIDE YOUR SHEEP Tour”, the US Festival pro shots are famous anyway, so let’s organize the set while comparing.

… And it looks like this. The set is the same for both performances, and the three songs that could not be heard at the US Festival are rare from the perspective of all careers. “Hang’Em High” was played only twice during the reunion era, but “Where Have All Those Good Times Gone!” Is a limited song only for this tour, and even “DOA” is a limited venue. The number played only in. “DIVER DOWN” itself was a colorful style, but you can enjoy a full show with more vivid entertainment colors due to its versatility.
Even so, it is extremely popular and has tremendous momentum. I thought I knew the monster from many studio masterpieces and chart records, but the amount of heat at the show site, which is the front line, was beyond my imagination. This work is a live album where you can experience the enthusiasm and live performances of the two performances in the field … No, it is a document album. Please fully enjoy this work, which is the first experience for core enthusiasts.

★ A newly excavated audience recording set of 2 performances “August 13 + 14, 1982 Detroit performance” for which no record was known so far. Only the Omoto master has a wonderful vividness without distortion due to dubbing, and a sharp core like a laser beam jumps into your hand. And the enthusiasm that surrounds the entire show is amazing. There is no jarring upcoming voice, but it doesn’t stop whether the distant and huge spectacle is between songs or playing. It is a big document that you can enjoy the whole 2 performances while feeling the popularity of VAN HALEN at that time.

『DIVER DOWN』を全米３位に送り込み、一段高いレベルへ飛躍を遂げた1982年のVAN HALEN。その知られざる２公演を伝えてくれる秘蔵ライヴセット４枚組が登場です。
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは、同会場の２連続公演。「1982年８月13日＋14日デトロイト公演」の新発掘オーディエンス録音です。この両日ともはこれまで一切の記録が知られていなかったのですが、最近になって同一録音家による大元マスターで初登場しました。まずは、当時のツアー・スケジュールからショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが“HIDE YOUR SHEEP Tour 1982/1983”の全体像。1983年編はVAN HALEN史上唯一となる南米ツアーや歴史的な“USフェスティバル”が行われましたが、実質的なツアー本編はあくまで1982年ですべて北米。本作のデトロイト公演は、その前半期となる「北米#1」の19公演目・20公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
前述の通り、これまで聴く事のできなかった２公演なのですが、それを伝えるサウンドはエッジもシャープなオーディエンス・サウンド。２公演とも同じ録音家によるマスターだけにサウンドも酷似。あくまでヴィンテージ録音の範疇で距離感もそれなりではあるものの、それを相殺するほどにディテールが鮮明。大元マスターだからこその鮮度がモノを言い、ダビングによる歪みのない鮮やかさに胸がすく。盛大な喝采もたっぷり吸い込みつつ、その上をレーザー光線のようにキリッとした芯が手元まで飛び込んでくるのです。
「喝采も吸い込んでいる」と言うと絶叫まみれのように思われるかも知れませんが、そうではありません。ここが本作の旨みでもあるのですが、凄まじい大熱狂が遠く地平線まで伸びていくようなスケール感を持っている。これが本当に凄い。普通、オーディエンス録音であっても歓声が沸くのは曲間であって、演奏中は静まり返るもの。ところが、本作はずーっと熱狂が止まない。もちろん、演奏中は多少下がりはするものの消えずに湧き続け、まるでわざわざ大歓声をオーバーダブしたままミックスで下げ損ねたAM放送かのよう。そして、そんな大歓声をやすやすと切り裂き、突っ切る演奏音やデイヴのヴォーカル。いかに当時のVAN HALENの人気が凄まじかったのか、それを肌感覚で感じつつ、生演奏もしっかりと楽しめる録音なのです。しかも、本作はそんな原音をさらにブラッシュアップ。実のところ、さすがに原音ではキツすぎた高音を緩和して全体バランスを調整。２公演を通してじっくり浸れるサウンドを実現しました。
そんなシャープ・サウンドで描かれるのは、オリジナルVHの旨みを濃縮したフルショウ。“HIDE YOUR SHEEP Tour”と言えば、何はさておきUSフェスティバルのプロショットが有名ですので、比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。２公演ともセットは同一で、USフェスティバルで聴けなかった３曲は全キャリア視点でもレア。「Hang ‘Em High」は再結成時代に２回だけ演奏されましたが、「Where Have All Those Good Times Gone!」はこのツアーだけの限定曲ですし、「D.O.A.」にしても限られた会場でだけ演奏されたナンバー。『DIVER DOWN』自体もカラフルな作風でしたが、その多彩さで一層エンターテインメント色が鮮やかになったフルショウを楽しめるのです。
それにしても凄い人気、凄まじい勢い。数々のスタジオ名盤やチャート記録で怪物ぶりを知っているつもりでしたが、最前線たるショウ現場の熱量は想像を超えていました。本作は、そんな熱気と全盛の生演奏を２公演丸ごと現場体験できるライヴアルバム……いや、ドキュメント・アルバムです。コアマニアでも初体験な現場、どうぞ本作でたっぷりと満喫してください。
