The first visit to Japan of the hero Uriah HEEP, which was realized seven months after DEEP PURPLE, one and a half years behind LED ZEPPELIN. Introducing the finest 3-disc set that vacuum-packs the highlight performance.
The historical highlight performance was held at “March 16, 1973: Nippon Budokan”. It is a super-decision board with the famous recording of the audience who has handed down the legendary night on DISC 1-2 and the TV broadcast pro shot (long color version of new excavation!) On DISC 3. Following ZEP / PURPLE, a British HR male who stepped on the stage of Nippon Budokan on his first visit to Japan. First, let’s look back on the schedule at that time.

・ March 16: Nippon Budokan ← ★ This work ★
・ March 17: Nagoya City Assembly Hall
・ March 19: Nagoya City Assembly Hall
・ March 20: Osaka Welfare Pension Hall
・ March 21: Osaka Welfare Pension Hall

[DISC 1-2: Full live album that conveys the one and only Budokan performance] Above, all 5 performances. Nippon Budokan was the first day of my first visit to Japan. By the way, speaking of “March 1973”, YES also made his first visit to Japan, but their performance in Tokyo was “March 8-10”. About a week after YES, I experienced URIAH HEEP for the first time, which was a ridiculously luxurious and rich spring.
And this work is the highest peak set of Budokan live that is unique to URIAH HEEP. First of all, the 2-disc full live album (DISC 1-2) is an audience recording that has long been known as the best record of Budokan. In fact, the sound is so clear that you can’t think of it as a Budokan. Anyway, the core is strong and the details are vivid. The performance sound and vocals that are not cloudy like a laser beam reach sharply. If you take the trouble to search for evidence of the guest record with headphones, there is a sense of space in the voice of Byron and the sound of the snare / bass drum. However, even that is a timbre, and no matter how much the choruses overlap, there is no blur. It’s a vivid sound with a sharp outline that doesn’t look like Odin.
Even more surprising is the low audience noise. Although it sucks in a fresh cheer, it is so small and distant that it feels unnatural compared to the heavy playing sound. That’s the balance that makes me think “I recorded it on stage !?”, and if it was a modern recording, it might have been different from the IEMs. Of course, the performance is full of the scent of the 70’s that can not be mistaken, but it is a direct sound that is so far from the audience.
The straight ball sound is drawn with the unique URIAH HEEP and Japan’s first full show. The set is roughly based on the official traditional edition “URIAH HEEP LIVE”, but it is not exactly the same, so let’s organize it here.
・ First (1 song): Gypsy
・ Look at Yourself (4 songs): July Morning (★) / Tears In My Eyes (★) / Look At Yourself (★) / Love Machine
・ Demons and Wizards (2 songs): Traveler In Time (★) / Easy Livin’
・ The Magician’s Birthday (2 songs): Sunrise (★) / Sweet Lorraine
・ Others: Rock’n Roll Medley (★)
* Note: “★” marks are songs that can be seen on DISC 3 TV broadcast pro shots.

[DISC 3: Long color version of the legendary TV pro shot] Although such a full live album alone is a cultural heritage decision, the more valuable and useless thing is the video version of DISC 3. Their Nippon Budokan live was broadcast on TV and became a standard professional shot, but a master who updated the highest peak was newly discovered.
Moreover, it is not just a dimension of improving image quality. Two types of this video have been known so far, a short version in color (about 22 minutes) and a long version in monochrome (about 38 minutes), but this work was discovered in 2020, “Color & “Long” version. You can watch the full 38 minutes of the broadcast in color. It seems that the conventional short color version is better at coloring and the fineness of details, but there is only a slight difference before the power of full-length color.
And the feeling of the times when Japan in 1973 blows out from that screen. Japanese narration is included at the beginning only for Nippon Broadcasting System, but this is overwhelming. With a tone like a newscaster reading the manuscript, it conveys the excitement of youth culture. Let’s write it out for a moment.
“The group of Uriah Heep, who arrived at Haneda on March 13, 1973, attended a performance at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo on the 16th. A record of 15,000 people (original mama) since the rock concert began. The Budokan, which drank a large crowd, was swirling with the enthusiasm and excitement of young people waiting for the appearance of Uriah Heep. Uriah smashed the audience with violent volume and hard action. Their representative album To commemorate the breakthrough of 50,000 copies of “Anti-Self-Nuclear”, a gold disc was also presented to Uriah Heep members and Bronze Records by Colombia Japan. Now your big excite music, URIAH HEEP !! ”
The maximum capacity of Nippon Budokan is 14,471 people, which is even smaller at concerts with stages and equipment. I think it’s difficult for 15,000 people to think about it, but I can say it. Speaking of HEEP, it has been known for its fantastic rock that embodies the middle between hard rock and progressive rock, but I will introduce them as “violent volume and hard action”. Only in 1973. And it is the narration that is unique to Japan at that time.

The monitor was devastating on the first visit to Japan of URIAH HEEP due to the inadequacy of the inviting side. Therefore, even in this work, you can feel the members suffering from being unable to hear the pitch of the chorus, and unlike DEEP PURPLE, you cannot expect a masterpiece that exceeds the official board “URIAH HEEP LIVE”. However, this is also a document. For the hero Uriah HEEP, it is the truth of the one-time Nippon Budokan live.
This work is a decisive board that sets the highest peak record of such Budokan. Originally, a set of 3 presses is suitable, but maybe the Omoto cassette is sleeping somewhere in the full live album, maybe the TV pro shot has the same image quality master as the short version. It may be excavated ……… With such a faint expectation, this time it was introduced from Uxbridge. Dreams are dreams, and there is no doubt that this work is the highest peak that can be hoped for now. Please fully enjoy the historic night.

Gypsy
July Morning(★)/Tears In My Eyes(★)/Look At Yourself(★)/Love Machine
Traveller In Time(★)/Easy Livin’
Sunrise(★)/Sweet Lorraine
Rock ‘n Roll Medley(★)

Now your big excite music, URIAH HEEP!!」
