そんな本作に収められているのは「1987年４月20日ロサンゼルス公演」。そのあまりにも特別すぎるオーディエンス録音です。何がそんなに特別なのか……の前に、まずはショウのポジション。約30年前に実現した栄光のワールドツアー全体像を今一度、振り返ってみましょう。

以上、全111公演。未だに「日本」の２文字がないことが寂しくなりますが、それはさておき、ほとんどが北米に費やされたツアーでした。その中でも本作のロサンゼルス公演は「北米#1」12公演目にあたる。アルバム『THE JOSHUA TREE』の発売から１ヶ月が過ぎ、序盤でありながらもアンサンブルもこなれてきた美味しいポジションのコンサートでした。
そんなショウの記録は以前から知られ、“THE JOSHUA TREE TOUR 1987”でも定番として愛されてきました。しかし、本作はそれとはちょっと違う。最近になって名門「JEMS」が発表したマスター・ダイレクトの超極上品なのです。もう、それだけで品質保証モノですが、本作はそれだけではない。録音家も特別な「KeithM」コレクション。80年代初頭に何百という名作を残した名手のオリジナル・マスターが公開されたのです。
録音の名手と発掘の名門。そのタッグが世に送り出したサウンドは、まさに絶品。とにかくクリアで見目麗しく、美しい。熱狂もリアルなオーディエンス録音ではあるものの、会場の空気が透き通っており、鳴りに艶を与えつつもキラキラとしたディテールの輝きを曇らせない。その美しき音響はU2の出音と完全にシンクロしており、あの音楽世界を何倍もスケールアップさせてくれるのです。そして、その中を逞しい“芯”が真っ直ぐに貫く。まさにオーディエンス録音だからこその美世界。U2だからこそのスペクタクルが輝く名録音なのです。
そのスペクタクルをさらに拡大させているのが歓声。曲間で贈られる近くの喝采から遠方席のうねりまで、すべてがクリア。距離が離れるほどに拍手１つの粒は小さくなりながらも、粒自体は潰れず、無数の集合が詳細に感じられる。もちろん、逞しい演奏を下支えしながらも決して邪魔しないバランスも絶妙。コンサート記録には様々な形態・クオリティがありますが、「恐ろしくクリアなオーディエンス録音」だけが描けるもの凄い遠近感がたっぷりと味わえるのです。
そんな美音とスペクタクルの世界だけでも特別ですが、本作はさらにショウそのものまで特別。栄光の“THE JOSHUA TREE TOUR 1987”の全景を味わえるだけでなく、この日は特別ゲストのボブ・ディランが参加するのです。彼が登場するのはアンコール。ディランのカバー「I Shall Be Released」を始めるのですが、その途中でボノが「ボブ・ディラン！」と叫び、御大が登場するのです。その瞬間、会場が爆発したように湧きに沸く。そして、「Knocking On Heavens’ Door」へ……。曲中ではボノが冗談めかしに「いつもボブの曲に自分の言葉で入れちまうんだ。でも、彼は気にしないってさ」と歌うと、ディランも「あぁ、俺もやるからね」と返す。もちろん、会場は沸騰した水蒸気が積乱雲になったような猛烈な熱気に包まれる。単に「同席してます」とはまったく違うドラマ。それを目の当たりにした観客の沸騰。ロック史には豪華共演が無数に溢れていますし、幾多のバンドで決定的なシーンを扱ってきました。それでもなお、ここまで感動的なシーンはちょっと思い浮かばない。そんな現場に超クリア・サウンドで立ち会えるのです。
当時だからこそのムードたっぷりな「Exit」「In God’s Country」や象徴盤『THE JOSHUA TREE』を創り上げたバンド・ポテンシャルそのものな演奏など、聴きどころは無数。世界を揺さぶっていたU2を名手の大元マスター・サウンドで聴けるばかりか、感動の共演まで味わい尽くせるオーディエンスの大名盤です。栄光の“THE JOSHUA TREE TOUR 1987”でも特別すぎる銘品。どうぞ、心ゆくまで存分にお楽しみください。
