これが1992年／1993年のU2。途中テクノロジー路線の第２弾『ZOOROPA』を制作／発表を挟みつつ、丸２年に渡って世界をツアー。その中で本作のロンドン公演は「欧州#2b」の20公演目。あの“LIVE AID”の現場ともなったウェンブリー・スタジアムでは「２DAYS×２回＝４公演」行われたのですが、その最終日にあたるコンサートでした。また、大ヒット中のミラード録音はツアー序盤の「北米#1」で記録されており、公式映像『LIVE FROM SYDNEY』は最終盤の「オセアニア」レッグ。本作は、それらに対するヨーロッパ篇ともなるのです。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、まさに絶品。何よりも素晴らしいのは力強い芯。さすがに巨大会場だけにサウンドボードと間違えるような密着感とはいきませんが、だからと言って距離感もない。上空に広く開いたオープンスペースらしく反響成分がなく、ＰＡから吐き出された出音がくっきりとしたまま吸い込まれているのです。
さらに素晴らしいのは、瑞々しいマスター鮮度。何しろ、録音者本人から直接譲られた本作だけのオリジナル録音であり、本作が全世界初公開。大元カセットからダイレクトにCD化されただけにダビング痕ゼロ／経年劣化ゼロで、さざ波のように広大に広がる大合唱も美しければ、虚空へ吸い込まれていく高音も綺麗に伸びる。しかも、この録音家がタダモノではなく、名作／傑作を数多く手掛けてきた人物。当店では“英国の巨匠”でお馴染みの名手。マイク・ミラードのようなギラギラと輝く艶とは味わいが異なりつつ、端正な美音はまったく引けを取らない。『LOS ANGELES 1992 1ST NIGHT』と並べることで、英米を代表する名手サウンドの味比べまでできてしまうのです。
