U2 flew to the world with his debut album “BOY”. Introducing a soundboard album that allows you to experience the dawn of the stage at its best.
The engraving on this work is “February 12, 1981 The Hague Performance (Netherlands)”. That stereo soundboard recording. Speaking of 1981, it is the time when “BOY Tour” and “OCTOBER Tour” intersect, and this work corresponds to the former. It’s also a good opportunity, so let’s first take a bird’s eye view of the activity outline and imagine the position of the show.

This is the history from 1980 to the production of “OCTOBER”. The above “UK” includes some Irish performances for convenience. Their live activities are said to have started in 1976, but it wasn’t until 1979 that they made a full-scale entry into the UK. The original single / EP was also only in Ireland. After that, he made his record debut worldwide with the single “11 O’Clock Tick Tock” / album “BOY”. From there, the world expanded at once with “Europe # 1” to continental Europe and “North America # 1” to the Americas. Some soundboard recordings are left from such “BOY Tour”, and three titles “KRO STUDIO, HILVERSUM 1980 (bonus CDR)” and “BAYOU CLUB 1981 (gift CDR)” are left around this work of the press CD. It will be released at the same time.
By the way, this work is the core of such an early sound board collection. It is a sound board album that conveys the 15th performance of “Europe # 2”. The reason why this work is the core is that it covers both quality and volume of songs. First of all, quality, but this is “completely official grade” without any questions. This show is also known to have been broadcast on TV / radio, but this work is an FM broadcast sound board. The cheers and mixes are vivid, and even in the official class, it makes me think that it is an “excavation sound source system” … but when the performance starts, the performance sounds and vocals are beautiful, and the balance of each instrument is well-balanced. It’s not a sloppy broadcast that is common in the early days, but a dignified sound that the station staff did a decent job.
And it is the master freshness that cannot be overlooked. Those who have experienced the sound board of The Hague performance in the past may be wondering, “Is that the official grade?” If so, the freshness will be totally different from this work. Recently, we have introduced the highest peak master of the “WAR Tour” sound board under the supervision of an overseas researcher, but this work is also the “BOY Tour” version by the same researcher. Its freshness, anti-vividness, beauty with no distortion or roughness. To be honest, in the case of a sound source that is already known to the best class master, even a researcher recommended master may say “Yeah, surely … a little good”, but this work is different. It’s a different sound of “Is it really the same sound source !?”
Next is the volume of songs. The details of “KRO STUDIO, HILVERSUM 1980 (bonus)” and “BAYOU CLUB 1981 (gift)” are given in each commentary, but they are all over 40 minutes. On the other hand, this work is a long recording of about 53 minutes. Of course, the show will be “live performance version BOY + α”. Here, let’s organize the set while comparing it with the standard sound boards of the next “OCTOBER Tour”.

Nine of the 11 songs in “BOY” will be performed on a large scale, and the repertoire unique to the early days such as “Another Time, Another Place” and “Stories For Boys” will be released one after another. And even more valuable single songs are studded. Not to mention “11 O’clock Tick Tock” which became the world debut single, the B-side song “Touch” and “Things To Make And Do” which was the B-side of the single “A Day Without Me” were also shown. You can enjoy extremely rare songs on the official sound board because the repertoire is still insufficient.
The Hague performance sound board that has reigned as a symbol of “BOY Tour”. It is the highest quality version. That is the most important work of early U2, which is comparable to “BOY” itself. Please enjoy it with the permanent storage press CD!

これが1980年から『OCTOBER』制作までの歩み。上記の「英国」には、便宜上一部アイルランド公演も含んでいます。彼らのライヴ活動は1976年から始まったとされますが、本格的にイギリス進出したのは1979年になってから。当初のシングル／EPもアイルランド国内のみでした。その後、シングル『11 O’Clock Tick Tock』／アルバム『BOY』で世界的にレコードデビュー。そこから「欧州#1」で大陸ヨーロッパ、「北米#1」でアメリカ大陸と一気に世界が広がっていったわけです。そんな“BOY Tour”からはサウンドボード録音もいくつか残されており、プレスCDの本作を軸として『KRO STUDIO, HILVERSUM 1980（ボーナスCDR）』『BAYOU CLUB 1981（ギフトCDR）』の３タイトルが同時リリースとなります。
さて、そんな初期サウンドボード・コレクションでも核となるのが本作。「欧州#2」の15公演目を伝えるサウンドボード・アルバムです。なぜ本作が核なのかと言えば、クオリティ／曲数ボリュームの両面に及ぶ。まずクオリティですが、これがもう問答無用に「完全オフィシャル級」。このショウはテレビ／ラジオで放送された事でも知られますが、本作はFM放送サウンドボード。歓声やミックスは生々しく、オフィシャル級でも「発掘音源系」かな……と思わせつつ、いざ演奏が始まると演奏音やヴォーカルが見目麗しく、各楽器のバランスも整っている。初期にありがちないい加減な放送ではなく、局スタッフもキチンとした仕事をこなした品格あるサウンドなのです。
そして、見逃せないのがマスター鮮度。既発などでデン・ハーグ公演サウンドボードを体験された事のある方は「アレが公式級？」と思われているかも知れません。もしそうだとしたら、本作とは鮮度がまるで違うのでしょう。このところ、当店では海外研究家の監修を受けて“WAR Tour”サウンドボードの最高峰マスターをご紹介してきましたが、本作は同じ研究家による“BOY Tour”篇でもある。その瑞々しさ、抗鮮やかさ、歪みも荒れも見当たらない美しさ。正直なところ、すでに極上クラスのマスターが知れ渡っている音源の場合は研究家推奨マスターでも「うん、確かに。。。ちょっと良い」くらいの事もありますが、本作は違う。「本当に同じ音源ですか!?」級の段違いサウンドなのです。
次は、曲数ボリューム。『KRO STUDIO, HILVERSUM 1980（ボーナス）』『BAYOU CLUB 1981（ギフト）』の詳細はそれぞれの解説に譲りますが、いずれも40分強といったところ。それに対し、本作は約53分の長尺録音なのです。もちろん、ショウは「生演奏版BOY＋α」となるもの。ここでは、次なる“OCTOBER Tour”の定番サウンドボード群と比較しつつ、セットを整理しておきましょう。
