The Jean-Michel Byron era was a singular point that stood out in the history of TOTO, which was filled with various heroes. Introducing a soundboard album where you can experience the show at its best.
“October 8, 1990 Rotterdam performance” is included in this work. It is the stereo sound board recording. The only “Planet Earth Tour” that took place during the Byron era is the official video work “GREATEST HITS LIVE … AND MORE”, but of course this work is a separate performance. In order to explain the situation in that area, let’s first unravel the schedule at that time.

This is TOTO in 1990. After the release of the Greatest Hits board “PAST TO PRESENT 1977–1990”, he toured mainly in Europe. The Rotterdam performance of this work is the 15th performance of “Europe # 1” just before coming to Japan. The performance in Paris where the official video “GREATEST HITS LIVE … AND MORE” was recorded was “October 4 + 5”, so it was a concert at about the same time.
This work recorded at such a show is a vivid and vivid stereo sound board. The loud cheers between the songs are far away, and the sharp-edged performance sound is clearly a direct connection to the on-site mix. If this was a modern show, I would have decided it was an IEMs recording. It’s too raw to be announced as an official work, but from an underground perspective, it’s good. The feeling of experience / farming at the site is not complete, but instead, the feeling of synchronization with TOTO and the real thrill of integrating the performance itself with the whole body are hard to replace. And even more so when it comes to the precious and illusory Byron era.
What is drawn with such a sound is a large volume that far surpasses the official video “GREATEST HITS LIVE … AND MORE”. The official video was an incomplete board with many cuts, probably because of the product balance, or because of the antipathy towards Byron. On the other hand, this work is a complete recording board that allows you to enjoy a full show while being a sound board. Let’s organize the set while comparing here so that you can experience the large capacity.

Only “Out Of Love” was performed on the 1999/2000 tour, but other than that, it is a limited song only for this tour. It’s already been 30 years since the controversial Byron era. It was a peculiar point of history, but that is why it also gave off a charm that cannot be experienced anywhere else. 多彩な英雄がひしめくTOTO史でもひと際異彩を放つ特異点だったジャン＝ミシェル・バイロン時代。そのショウを極上体験できるサウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に収められているのは「1990年10月８日ロッテルダム公演」。そのステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。バイロン時代に行われた唯一の“Planet Earth Tour”は公式の映像作『GREATEST HITS LIVE… AND MORE』も残されていますが、本作はもちろん別公演。その辺の事情を説明するためにも、まずは当時のスケジュールから紐解いてみましょう。

これが1990年のTOTO。グレイテスト・ヒッツ盤『PAST TO PRESENT 1977–1990』のリリース後にヨーロッパを中心にツアーを実施。本作のロッテルダム公演は、来日直前だった「欧州#1」の15公演目。公式映像『GREATEST HITS LIVE… AND MORE』が収録されたパリ公演は“10月４日＋５日”ですので、ほぼ同時期のコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、鮮やかビビッドなステレオ・サウンドボード。曲間の大歓声もやた遠く、エッジ鋭い演奏音は明らかに現場ミックスまんまな卓直結系。もしこれが現代のショウであれば、IEMs録音と判断したでしょう。もっともオフィシャル作品として発表するには生々しすぎるとは言え、アンダーグラウンド視点で言わせてもらえば「それが良い」。現場会場の体験感／離農感などまるでないわけですが、その代わりにTOTOとのシンクロ感、演奏そのものと全身が一体化する醍醐味は何物にも代え難い。しかも、それが貴重極まる幻のバイロン時代となれば、なおのことです。
そんなサウンドで描かれるのは、公式映像『GREATEST HITS LIVE… AND MORE』を遙かに凌駕する大ボリューム。公式映像は商品バランスを考えたのか、あるいはバイロンへの反感のせいか、カットも多い不完全盤でした。それに対し、本作はサウンドボードでありながらフルショウを味わえる完全収録盤なのです。その大容量ぶりを実感していただくためにも、ここで比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。下記の曲目にはストーンズの「Let’s Spend The Night Together」もリストされていますが、これは抜粋的なジャムなので上記では省略しました。「Child’s Anthem」「Lovers In The Night」「Till The End」といったところも美味しいですが、やはり目玉はバイロンを迎えて発表された『PAST TO PRESENT 1977–1990』の新曲群や激レア曲「American Girl」。「Out Of Love」だけは1999年/2000年ツアーでも演奏されましたが、それ以外はこのツアーだけの限定曲。まさに「バイロンTOTO」の象徴ともなるレパートリーの数々を脳みそ直結サウンドボードで楽しめるのです。
