ファンの大きな期待と熱狂の中で実現したTOTOの1980年初来日公演では、3月3日の名古屋公演を収録したプレスCDタイトル「HYDRA IN NAGOYA」が、優良なオーディエンス・サウンドで貴重な来日公演序盤のステージを楽しませてくれます。
それに対して本作「HYDRA COMES TOKYO」では、ジャパンツアーのクライマックスとなった東京ラスト2Daysをパッケージ。ファンの皆さんには「HYDRA IN NAGOYA」と本作を併せ聴いて、TOTOの初来日をじっくりとお楽しみ頂きたいと思います。

TOTOが待望の初来日を果たした1980年3月のジャパンツアーは、3月2日の大阪公演を皮切りに、3月13日の東京・渋谷公演まで全10公演が行われました。当時の日本におけるTOTO人気はアイドル的な高さで、各公演のチケットは(追加公演分も含めて)発売後たちまちソールドアウトになるほど。東京では初来日にも関わらず5公演がブッキングされ、その全てが素晴らしい熱気の中で行われました。
本作ではこの東京公演のうち、3月12日の東京厚生年金会館と3月13日(ツアー最終日)の渋谷公会堂公演を、どちらもオリジナル・マスターカセットより計4枚のディスクに収録したもの。これらの音源は10年以上前にMASTERPORTレーベルから登場していましたが、長らく廃盤状態だった事もあり、再リリースを望む声が高かった録音。本作での再登場に当たっては既発の特徴だった高域中心のイコライズを緩和し、より自然な聴き易いサウンドに仕上がっています。ナチュラルさを重視した結果、両公演とも若干ソフトで丸みのある音像ですが、鮮度や質感の確かさは申し分なく、大ヒットナンバーからプログレ風のインスト・パートまで、聴き応え満点の内容を楽しめます。

ディスク1と2へ収録されたのは、3月12日の東京厚生年金会館公演です。本ライヴはテレビの音楽番組で放送された映像素材が特に有名。初期のTOTOを知る上では絶対に欠かせない映像として、こちらは多くの方がご存知でしょう。しかし映像は実際のライヴを半分程度に編集した不完全版であるため、当日の演奏を全て聴くならばオーディエンス録音に頼るほかありません。その中でも本録音は音質・聴き易さともトップレベルと言えるマスターを元にしており、特別なライヴを楽しむのにふさわしいクオリティを備えています。
落ち着きのあるサウンドはTOTOのメロディアスなサウンドをじっくり聴き込ませ、オープニングの「Hydra」や、ヒットナンバーの「I’ll Supply The Love」,「Hold The Line」まで、バンドの高い演奏力をじっくりと楽しめるでしょう。

ディスク3と4に収録された渋谷公会堂でのライヴはジャパンツアー最終日にふさわしい名演です。音のクオリティは前日に勝るとも劣らないレベルで、音のダイレクト感やバランスは、場面によってはライン音源のような感覚で聴けるでしょう。特に観客が演奏に耳を傾ける「Hydra」中盤以降や、当時未発表の「Tale Of A Man」、ライヴ後半のキーボードソロは絶品です。もちろん臨場感も確かで、ヒット曲「Child’s Anthem」で湧き上る手拍子や歓声などは、優れたオーディエンス録音ならではの味わいがあります(熱心なTOTOマニアならば、この演奏と盛り上がりをしっかりしたサウンドで残してくれたテーパーに、思わず感謝したくなるでしょう)。ライヴ後半の「Hold The Line」や「White Sister」,「All Us Boys」は、キャッチーなのにプログレッシヴ、なおかつストレートなバンドの多彩な音楽性を満喫できるでしょう!

バンドが人気・勢い・演奏力とも上り調子だった1980年。両日の演奏とも「この時代だからこそ」の魅力に溢れています。「Hold The Line」や「99」といったシングルヒット曲はもちろん、「Georgy Porgy」や「St. George And The Dragon」,「I’ll Supply The Love」といった名曲、そしてアンコールの「Runaway」・「All Us Boys」まで、練り込まれたセットリストは堪りません! 聴き手に深い感動と喜びを約束する合計約210分の4枚組。重要性にも関わらず音源の絶対数が少ない1980年来日公演において、本作は大定番の一本だと断言します!
