Tommy Shaw’s solo visit to Japan was realized in 1986 after the release of “WHAT IF”. Introducing an original recording that vacuum-packed the site.
“March 2, 1986: Nakano Sunplaza performance” is imbued with this work. It is the excellent audience recording. Speaking of Tommy’s solo visit to Japan, it is also famous that the official EP “LIVE IN JAPAN” was left, but of course this work is a separate performance. In order to understand the situation in that area, let’s first look back on the schedule at that time.

・ February 28: TOKYO FM Hall ← * Official LIVE IN JAPAN
・ March 1: Nakano Sunplaza
・ March 2: Nakano Sunplaza ← ★ Coco ★
・ March 3: Osaka Sankei Hall
・ March 6: Aichi Kosei Nenkin Kaikan

This is Tommy Shaw’s first solo visit to Japan. As soon as they arrived, they performed a special performance limited to 400 people, which also served as a radio recording, and it was also recorded in the EP “LIVE IN JAPAN” containing 5 songs. The Nakano Sunplaza performance of this work was a regular performance two days later.
This work recorded at such a show is a powerful direct sound that has both close contact and beauty. It’s an original recording only for this work, which was handed over by the recorder himself, but it’s so wonderful that I forget its preciousness. Anyway, there is no sense of distance in the core, and the details are detailed. It’s so powerful that you can feel a slight distortion in the snare’s striking peak, but the guitar / bass and the essential vocals are neat and beautiful, and the outlines of each are clear and separate. Of course, since it is a direct transfer from the Omoto cassette, Gene is also the ultimate and has no deterioration. You can hear the clapping along with the beat, so you can judge it as an audience, but when you hear it, it sounds like an FM broadcast.
The direct contact sound depicts a solo full show that is valuable in the world. As mentioned above, it’s just after the official EP, so let’s organize the set while comparing (for the time being).

● STYX number (5 songs)
・ Crystal Ball: Crystal Ball (★)
・ Recollection of ancient times: Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) (★) / Renegade (★)
・ Cornerstone: Boat On The River
・ Paradise Theater: Too Much Time On My Hands (★)
● Solo number (10 songs + α)
・ Girls with Guns: Come In And Explain (★) / Girls With Guns (★)
・ What If: Jealousy (★) / See Me Now / Reach For The Bottle (★) / Remo’s Theme (What If) / Nature Of The Beast / This Is Not A Test (★) / Bad Times (★)
・ Others: Instrumental Tune (★) / Slow Down
* Note: “★” marks are songs that cannot be heard in the official EP “LIVE IN JAPAN”.

… And it looks like this. This work is a full show that lasts about 80 minutes compared to the official EP with 5 songs. I compared it for the time being, but it goes without saying that the volume of songs in this work is overwhelmingly higher. STYX’s carefully selected best selection is also delicious, but what is still noteworthy is the masterpieces of the solo album. In the latest work “WHAT IF”, all songs except “True Confessions”, “Count on You” and “Friendly Advice” are performed on a large scale, and in addition to the hit single “Girls With Guns” which is indispensable from the 1st album, “Come In And” “Explain” takes on an unexpected pole position. “Instrumental Tune”, which has no official song title, is not just a play, it is an unreleased song of about 4 minutes that Tony’s crying guitar shines, and with that as an overture, an excellent arrangement that falls into “Renegade” is also solo.・ Unique to live performances. That’s what I wanted to keep an official full live album instead of an EP … It’s a wonderful show that even the grudges of 35 years ago go through my mind.
Originally, Tommy Shaw’s solo performance, which is hard to hear. It is a masterpiece live album that you can fully experience with a wonderful master sound that blows away the dazzling preciousness. A hidden treasure board from Japan that can be enjoyed by fans all over the world. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

★ Valuable solo visit to Japan “March 2, 1986: Nakano Sunplaza performance” exquisite audience recording. This is an original recording only for this work, and there is no sense of distance in the core, and the details are detailed. The outline of each instrument is clear and the feeling of separation is sufficient. Of course, since it is a direct transfer from the Omoto cassette, Gene is also the ultimate and has no deterioration. You can enjoy valuable solo songs incomparably with the official EP “LIVE IN JAPAN” containing 5 songs.

Crystal Ball(★)

Jealousy(★)/See Me Now/Reach For The Bottle(★)/Remo’s Theme (What If)/Nature Of The Beast/This Is Not A Test(★)/Bad Times(★)
Instrumental Tune(★)/Slow Down

最新作『WHAT IF』は「True Confessions」「Count on You」「Friendly Advice」以外の全曲が大盤振る舞いされ、さらに1stアルバムからも必須のヒット・シングル「Girls With Guns」の他、「Come In And Explain」が意外なポールポジションを務めたりする。
