This is Tom Petty in 1989/1990. The tour was divided into “North America # 1” in the summer of 1989 and “North America # 2” in the early 1990s, and “COSTA MESA 1990” was the latter live album. On the other hand, this work is “North America # 1” at the beginning of the tour. It was the 17th performance of the concert. At the site, “Universal Amphitheater (currently Gibson Amphitheater)”, performances were held for three consecutive days, and it was the first day that Millard saw it.
This work recorded at such a show is a masterpiece that breathes the individuality of Millard, which has both clearness and a thick core. However, it is not the top class in the mirrored collection. To be honest, the sister work “COSTA MESA 1990” is one step better for “STRANGE BEHAVIOR Tour”. If you are a keen person, you may have noticed in the title that “COSTA MESA 1990” was the original cassette, while this work was transferred from “1st Generation Tapes”. However, normally, the difference of one generation is not enough to overturn the superiority or inferiority of recording. However, in the case of this work, deterioration over time is seen from the beginning to the beginning of the tape, and the sound sways (albeit slightly). Another regrettable thing is the enthusiasm of the audience. This is also only the beginning, but the surrounding audience is a little noisy.
I don’t know if it’s recommended or not, but it’s also a level that I have to point out because it’s a mirrored collection. By normal standards, the enthusiasm of the surroundings is a sign of an astronomical hit, and there is almost no sense of instability on the tape. Of course, the basic quality such as the direct feeling of the core and the fineness of the details is not complaining, and about 40 minutes after the start, the super-superb sound world comparable to the masterpiece “COSTA MESA 1990” will spread. ..
The show itself is more important than the sound. I have repeated “COSTA MESA 1990’s sister work” from earlier, but in fact, despite the same tour, the set is quite different. Let’s sort it out by comparing it immediately.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1989年７月29日ロサンゼルス公演」。その絶品オーディエンス録音です。『FULL MOON FEVER』に伴う“STRANGE BEHAVIOR Tour”のミラード録音と言えば、昨年発掘されて大評判となったプレス名盤『COSTA MESA 1990 MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES（Zion-162）』も記憶に新しいところ。本作は同ツアーで記録されたミラード録音の第二弾なのです。まずは、当時のスケジュールから姉妹作の位置関係を確認しておきましょう。

これが1989年／1990年のトム・ペティ。ツアーは1989年夏の「北米#1」と翌1990年初頭の「北米#2」に分かれており、『COSTA MESA 1990』は後者のライヴアルバムでした。それに対し、本作はツアー序盤の「北米#1」。その17公演目にあたるコンサートでした。現場となった“ユニバーサル・アンフィシアター（現：ギブソン・アンフィシアター）”では３日連続公演が行われており、ミラードが観覧したのはその初日でした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、クリアさと極太な芯が両立したミラードの個性が息づく銘品。ただし、ミラード・コレクションでもトップクラス……とまではいかない。正直に申しまして“STRANGE BEHAVIOR Tour”なら姉妹作『COSTA MESA 1990』の方が一歩上手です。鋭い方ならタイトルでお気づきと思いますが、『COSTA MESA 1990』が大元カセットだったのに対し、本作は「1st Generation Tapes」からトランスファーされているのです。もっとも、通常なら１世代の差は録音の優劣を覆すほどの違いではない。しかし、本作の場合はテープ冒頭から序盤にかけて経年劣化が見られ（わずかながら）音が揺れる。もう１つ惜しいのは、観客の熱気。これも序盤だけの話なのですが、周囲の観客がちょっと騒がしいのです。
なんだかお薦めしているのか違うのか分からなくなってきましたが、それもこれも「ミラード・コレクションだからあえて指摘せざるをえない」というレベル。普通基準で言えば、周囲の熱狂は天文学的ヒットの証ですし、テープの不安定感もないに等しい。もちろん、芯のダイレクト感やディテールの細やかさといった基本クオリティは文句ナシですし、開演から40分ほど経った頃からは名作『COSTA MESA 1990』にも匹敵する超・極上の音世界が広がるのです。
そのサウンド以上に重要なのは、ショウそのもの。先ほどから「COSTA MESA 1990の姉妹作」と繰り返しておりますが、実は同じツアーにも関わらず、セットはかなり異なるのです。早速、比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『COSTA MESA 1990』は大ヒット中の『FULL MOON FEVER』ナンバーやカバーに時間を割いていましたが、本作はツアー序盤なせいかクラシックスに比重が置かれている。大定番の「American Girl」も演奏されています（と言いますか、『COSTA MESA 1990』でやってなかった方が驚き）が、その一方で貴重な「Something Big」や「Jammin’ Me」も披露してくれます。さらに様変わりしているのがカバー群。ココモ・アーノルドのスタンダード「Milk Cow Blues」やTHE CLASHの「Should I Stay Or Should I Go?」、THE GEORGIA SATELLITESの「Keep Your Hands To Yourself」と、全入れ替えになっているのです。
同じバンドを二度録音したがらないミラードをして、何度も足を運んだ“STRANGE BEHAVIOR Tour”。その素晴らしいショウを絶対名手の銘品サウンドで楽しめるライヴアルバムです。総合点で言いますとツアー代表作は『COSTA MESA 1990』のまま。本作の登場を持ってしても、その玉座は揺るいでいません。しかし、ショウ内容があまりにも違いすぎる。本作は『COSTA MESA 1990』のライバル作ではなく、互いに補完し合う姉妹作。どうぞ、併せてじっくりとご堪能ください。
