The legendary stereo sound board of the Japanese performance is the highest peak master ever. That “legend” is the second performance of “Japan February 27, 1981: Nakano Sanguraza Performance”. This show was a radio broadcast at that time, a large classic sound board in the large standard that has brought many incarnations. Also on the official “THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS” was also a superb broadcasting that “Psycho Killer” “Once In A Lifetime” “Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)” was adopted. This work is a new master album that updates the highest quality.

Actually, the sound of this work is terrible. “Official grade” is natural. Besides, there is no uncompensive comp, naturally glossy “ringing”, the vivid stereo feeling at the level with the particles accurately depicts the smell of 1981. 日本公演の伝説的ステレオサウンドボードが、史上最高峰マスターで登場です。その“伝説”とは、2度目の来日公演のうち「1981年2月27日:中野サンプラザ公演」です。このショウは当時ラジオ放送され、幾多の既発を生んできた大定番中の大定番サウンドボード。オフィシャルの『THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS』にも「Psycho Killer」「Once In A Lifetime」「Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)」が採用されるほどの極上放送でした。本作は、最高峰クオリティを更新する新マスター・アルバムなのです。
そのサウンドに触れる前に、まずは2度目の来日“REMAIN IN LIGHT JAPAN TOUR”の概要を今一度振り返ってみましょう。

以上、全6公演。本作の中野サンプラザ公演は、そのド真ん中にあたるコンサートでした。もちろん、皆さまお馴染みのライヴではあるわけですが、そのサウンドはお馴染みではない。記録マニアによるエアチェック・マスターではあるのですが、このマニアがただ者ではなかった。当店に幾多の放送記録を提供してくださる方なのですが、当時考え得る限りのハイエンド機材を駆使し、受信状況・電力・メディアにも細心の気を使い、保存状態も完璧。そんなマスター・カセットそのものからダイレクトにCD化した極上品なのです。なお、既発の中には「The Book I Read」「The Girls Want To Be With Girls」「Mind」も収録した長尺盤もありますが、これは別公演のかさ増。本作では正真正銘の中野サンプラザ公演のみで構成しています。
実際、本作のサウンドは凄まじい。「オフィシャル級」なのは当たり前。もちろん、オフィシャル基準にもダメ盤から名盤まで幅広いわけですが、本作は間違いなく公式名盤級。しかも、無粋なコンプもなく、自然で艶やかな“鳴り”、粒子でレベルで鮮やかなステレオ感は1981年の匂いを正確に描き出してくれる。当時だからこその美しさでありながら、「当時はこんなにナチュラルな放送だったのか」と驚く……そんな極めつけの美音なのです。
そのサウンドがまた、当時のTALKING HEADSだからこそ嬉しい。核となる4人に黒人メンバー4を加え、さらにエイドリアン・ブリューまでもが参加した“EXPANDED HEADS”。しかも、単に“音の厚さ”を狙ったのとも違い、各人のノートが絡み合ってはほぐれていく。本作の超・極上サウンドボードは、そんなビッグで複雑なアンサンブルにうってつけなのです。実際、強烈にパーカッシヴなアフリカン・ビートがいくら乱れ飛ぼうと塊にはならず、1音の立ち上がりから消音まで立体感が凄い。その上で、その1つ1つの間に“スキマ”まで感じられる。そして、その“スキマ”を縫うように流れるデヴィッド・バーンの歌声も耳元級……。そして、エイドリアン・ブリュー。とにかく多彩なフレーズの洪水。メロディと効果音の中間のようでありながら、曲にピタッと寄り添う断片的なフレーズ。その乱舞はバーンのヴォーカルにさえ肉薄するほど目立ちまくっています。

ステージ上に名盤『REMAIN IN LIGHT』の世界を描き出し、『MORE SONGS ABOUT』『FEAR OF MUSIC』も染め変えた“EXPANDED HEADS”。アーバンから土着的なアフリカンヒートに至るまで、時代・文化・国境を超えた強烈なオリジナリティと色彩感覚。その芳醇なグルーヴとアンサンブルをこれ以上なく鮮やかに描き出した究極のステレオサウンドボード・アルバムです。長い歴史でもファンに愛され続けた名ライヴアルバム、その史上最高峰を更新する新マスター。どうぞ、じっくりとお楽しみください。
