STYX in 1977 made a breakthrough with the famous board “THE GRAND ILLUSION”. The legendary recording that captures the scene is decided to be reprinted.
It was “November 4, 1977 Boston performance” that was imbued with such a work. It is a superb audience recording by the legendary master Dan Lampinsky who has made a name in the recording history. Speaking of “THE GRAND ILLUSION Tour”, Mike Millard’s “LONG BEACH ARENA 1978 (Virtuoso 457/458)” will be permanently preserved this week, but if it is a new masterpiece, this work is traditional. Famous recording. It’s Twin Peaks by two of the best rock musicians of the 70’s.

This is the whole picture of “THE GRAND ILLUSION Tour”. From two months before the release of the album to the end of January 1978, a long national tour was held. Millard’s work “LONG BEACH ARENA 1978” was in 1978 at the beginning of the year, but this work was the 41st performance of “North America # 1b”, which was about two and a half months before that.
This work recorded at such a show is a super-superb recording that further enhances the fame of “Master Lampinsky”. If you have experienced Lampinsky’s work, it will come to you, but the powerful core and delicate details are soundboard grade and the faint hall sound gives it a dignity and luster. In fact, its quality is comparable to Millard’s “LONG BEACH ARENA 1978”. Speaking of the difference, mirrored recording has a stronger core attack and is more like a sound board. On the other hand, Lampinsky’s work is superior in its glittering transparency.
Even so, the difference in “luck” is that the mirrored work has been made into a press and this work has been introduced from the Uxbridge label. As a matter of fact, “Man In The Wilderness” was not played in this Boston performance, which was slightly shorter than the long beach performance recorded by Millard. そんなショウで記録された本作は「達人ランピンスキー」の名声を一層高める超・極上録音。ランピンスキー作品を体験された事のある方ならピンと来ると思いますが、力強い芯も細やかなディテールもサウンドボード級で仄かなホール鳴りが気品と艶を宿らせる。実際、そのクオリティはミラード作『LONG BEACH ARENA 1978』にもまったく引けを取らない。違いと言えば、ミラード録音の方が芯のアタック感が強く、よりサウンドボード的。その一方でランピンスキーの本作はキラキラとした透明度で勝っているくらいです。
それでもミラード作がプレス化され、本作がUxbridgeレーベルからのご紹介となっているのは「運」の差。実のところ、本作のボストン公演では「Man In The Wilderness」が演奏されず、ミラードが記録したロングビーチ公演より若干短かったのです。こればかりはいかな録音の天才でもどうにもならないわけです。しかし１曲少ないとは言え、そこは大ブレイク真っ最中の“THE GRAND ILLUSION Tour”。その豪華ぶりも濃度もハンパではありません。ここでセットも整理しておきましょう。
