Sting’s visit to Japan for the first time in four years has been announced, and Sting’s attention is rapidly increasing. for that preparation. . . The latest incident board has arrived. Emergency release decision!
The incident occurred “Amsterdam performance on November 17, 2022”. This work is a superb audience recording that completely recorded the whole story. The incident is Sting’s depression. He caught a bad cold (he tested negative for COVID-19) and has no voice at all. Still managed to advance the show, but he finally runs out of power. A concert that normally takes 100 minutes ended in less than an hour.
However, this work is not just a painful and short live album. Sting is the most professional in the scene, and the professionalism and musical sense that exudes because he is facing a pinch is amazing. This is the schedule that has been announced so far. This year alone, it has already exceeded 100 performances, perhaps due to the suppression of the pandemic. It’s not the amount of work you’d do in your 70s, but it’s a terrible amount of work that makes you wonder, “That’s why I’m not feeling well.” And the Amsterdam performance where the incident occurred was “Europe # 3”. After this show, the tour was suspended (of course), and the remaining 4 performances were announced to be postponed.
Well, this work, which recorded such a scene of the incident, has the highest quality. Roughly speaking, it’s like a sound board. If you listen to it with headphones, you can feel the atmosphere in the extension of the voice (although it’s not), but it’s also a story of trying to discern it with all your might. Everything from the strength of the core, the fine details, the wonderful sense of separation, and the subtleties of the vocals that are essential, is a masterpiece recording that is far from the customer record.
Let’s move on to the show content as soon as it’s not the time to line up the rhetoric too much. What is drawn with such a superb sound is the appearance of Sting fighting against the voice that does not come out. Although the choppy singing voice is painful, on the other hand, it seems to be a great veteran that responds flexibly if it does not come out. First, the order of the songs. In the early stages, it starts as usual, but eventually it starts to omit the set. Choose a quiet song that doesn’t put a strain on your throat, and proceed while considering the flow. As a result, it will end with 11 songs, but in the final stage, it will finish with the deadly “Fragile” and “Every Breath You Take”. There are artists who often push a bad show and force the show, throwing it in the middle of the set and interrupting it, but Sting is different. The first tour report, “REIMS 2022 (Uxbridg 1757)”, will also show a new song “Loving You” that could not be heard, but the highlight of this work is the performance and the atmosphere of the scene. For example, improvised arrangements. It’s easy to say that if you can’t sing, you should change it so that you can sing, but there aren’t many artists who can suddenly change the arrangement on the fly. “Roxanne” is in a quiet, acoustic bossa nova style, and “Every Breath You Take” also changes the key. Of course, there is no way to have a detailed meeting with everyone on stage, and Sting has a tremendous sense of music that can change the band completely with just a few words.
What’s even more interesting is Sting’s MC, who speaks openly about the progress of such a show. At first, he said, “Your voice is hoarse today. Well, I’ll be back soon.” He doesn’t get irritated when he says that, and he doesn’t show any sadness, so he’s in a good mood. 事件が起きたのは「2022年11月17日アムステルダム公演」。本作は、その一部始終を完全収録した極上オーディエンス録音です。その事件とは、スティングの絶不調。酷い風邪にかかってしまい（新型コロナは陰性だったそうです）、声がまったく出ない。それでもなんとかショウを進めるものの、遂に力尽きてしまう。普段なら100分はあるコンサートが１時間も経たずに終了してしまったのです。
ただし本作は、単に苦しげで短いライヴアルバムなわけでもありません。スティングはシーン随一のプロフェッショナルであり、ピンチに直面しているからこそ滲み出るプロ根性と音楽センスがスゴいのです。その気になる内容の前に、まずはショウのポジション。来る日本公演とも併せ、現在進行形のスケジュールをおさらいしておきましょう。

これが現在までに公表されているスケジュール。パンデミックで抑え込まれた反動か、今年だけでも既に100公演を軽く超えている。とても70代の仕事量ではなく、「そりゃ体調も崩すわけだ」と妙な納得もしてしまう凄まじさです。そして、事件が起きたアムステルダム公演は「欧州#3」。このショウを最後にツアーは中断（当たり前です）され、残り４公演を延期が告知されています。
さて、そんな事件現場を記録した本作は、クオリティも超極上。ざっくり言えば「まるでサウンドボード」。ヘッドフォンで聴き込めば声の伸び（てないんですけどね）に空気感は感じるものの、それも全力で判別しようとしての話。芯の力強さや細やかなディテール、見事なセパレート感、それに肝心要となるヴォーカルの機微に至るまで、すべてが客録離れしている名録音です。
あまり美辞麗句を並べている場合でもないので、さっさとショウ内容に移りましょう。そんな極上サウンドで画かれるのは、出ない声と戦うスティングの姿。途切れ途切れな歌声は痛々しくもあるものの、その一方で出ないなら出ないなりに柔軟に対応していくところが大ベテランらしい。まず、曲順。序盤は普段通りにスタートするのですが、そのうちセットを省き始める。ノドに負担のかからない静かな曲を選び、それでいて流れも考えながら進めていく。結果として11曲で終えてしまうのですが、終盤はしっかり必殺の「Fragile」「Every Breath You Take」で畳みかけてフィニッシュするのです。よく不調を押してショウを強行し、セットの途中で投げて中断するアーティストはいますが、スティングは違う。できるだけその場のオーディエンスを盛り上げ、後味良く終わらせているのです。では、ここでその選曲もチェックしておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。ツアー第一報の『REIMS 2022（Uxbridg 1757）』では聴けなかった新曲「Loving You」も披露しますが、やはり本作の聴きどころは演奏ぶりと現場の雰囲気。例えば、即興アレンジ。歌えないなら歌えるように変えれば良い……と口で言うのはカンタンですが、ぶっつけ本番でいきなりアレンジを変えられるアーティストはそうそういない。「Roxanne」は静かなアコースティックなボサノバ・スタイルにしていますし、「Every Breath You Take」もキーを変えている。もちろん、ステージ上で全員に綿密な打ち合わせなどできるはずがなく、スティングがホンのひと言ふた言告げただけでがらりと変えられるバンドの面々も凄まじい音楽センスです。
さらに面白いのが、そんなショウの進行を開けっぴろげに話すスティングのMC。最初は「今日はどうもしゃがれ声だね。まぁ、そのうち戻るさ」と気楽に構えているのですが、「なかなか（調子が）戻らないね」「新型コロナは陰性だったよ」と苦笑い。そう言いつつ苛立ちはせず、悲哀も見せないからムードも良い。そして「高音が出ないから新しいアレンジでやってみようか」「If I Ever Lose My Faith In Youをやろうと思ったけど……高すぎるな。Fields Of Goldにしよう」「よし、じゃあアコースティックにしよう。ダニー、ギターを貸して」などなど、逆にアットホームな暖かみまで醸してくるのです。
あらゆる手立てを尽くしつつ、やはり声が戻ることなくショウは終了。「今日はみんなの期待したショウはできなかったね。ボクにとってもそうだ。またここに必ず戻ってきて、フルヴォイスで臨むよ」と約束してスティングは去ります。確かに彼の言う通りではありますが、期待していなかったプロフェッショナリズムと高い音楽センスを見せつける一夜でもありました。そんなMCの数々や即興の機微も隅々までしっかりと味わえる希代の名録音。どうぞ、本作で事件の目撃者になってください。
★「2022年11月17日アムステルダム公演」の極上オーディエンス録音。スティングが悪性の風邪に罹り、約１時間で切り上げてしまった絶不調なショウでした。単に声が出ないだけでなく、出ないなら出ないなりに曲順を変え、アコースティックやキーの変更などその場でどんどんアレンジしていく柔軟さと実際にやれてしまう高い音楽性がスゴい。そんな演奏の機微はもちろん、不調を隠さず、逆にアットホームな雰囲気にしてしまうMCの一言一言までハッキリ／くっきり楽しめる極上サウンドも素晴らしい希代の大名盤です。
