SOFT MACHINEの歴史を追って行くと、1977年あたりからは事実上解散となっているが、個々のメンバーの枝分かれもファンであればご存知のように細かい流れになっている。ただし、精力的に活動していたBassのHUGH HOPPERとSAXのELTON DEANを中心にこの布陣が組まれたことは、SOFT MACHINE解散後のSOFT HEAPやSOFT HEAD、SOFT HEAT（すべてメンバーの頭文字がバンド名となっている。）の流れをくんでいると考えるのが正解かも知れない。日本ではALLAN HOLDSWORTHの名前がカリスマ的に扱われていたため、スーパーグループの再来のような触れ込みで扱われた。その結果、「SOFT MACHINE」という名前だけが先行してしまい、観客は過去の作品の再演を望んだ。SOFT HEAPやこのSOFT WORKに共通するコンセプトはジャズそのものである。そのほとんどがジャズ的インプロヴィゼーションを主体とし、ここでも8といった過去のタイトル曲があるが、あくまでもモチーフとしてテーマが使われ、コード展開に合わせて、各人のソロを繋いでいくものである。さて、このDVDR。会場は小さなクラブだろう。ソースはオーディエンス録画となっている。メインはJohn Marshallのドラムをアップに、ソロ毎にメンバーを映している。2曲目終了あたりに全体を撮りたくなったのか移動を試みたりしていて、一瞬乱れたりもするが音像には影響なし。映像は終止安定しているが全体像は一瞬しか映らない。それでも会場の雰囲気は素晴らしく、ソロ毎に沸き起こる拍手は酒でも楽しみながらの贅沢な空間だったのだろう。逆に日本公演は「何をやってくれるんだ？」という過度な期待で、コンサート中盤あたりには睡魔にやられ舟をこぐ人、完全に気を失ってしまった人がたくさんいたのを思い出す。たった7年前の演奏ではあるが、今となってはELTON DEAN、HUGH HOPPERが故人となってしまった。よって、このカンタベリージャズ路線のスタートとなったSOFT HEAP（ALAN GOWEN、PIP PYLE）に至ってはメンバー全員がこの世にいない。その後、HUGH HOPPERが亡くなるまではメンバーチェンジをしてSOFT MACHINE LEGACYとバンド名を変え活動していたが、演奏の方向性は変えずカンタベリーミュージックの名曲をモチーフに彼らなりのジャズを演奏し続けた。それらはオリジナルとはかけ離れているものだが、曲の良さはLEGACYとして続いて行く。このDVDRはメンバーのリラックスした演奏が楽しめ、それぞれのノビノビしたソロワーク、そして重鎮たちの生み出すグルーヴが気持ちよい。素晴らしい記録だと思う。
