SCORPIONS in 1996, who made his last visit to Japan in the 90’s with the masterpiece “PURE INSTINCT” of sorrow. Introducing an original recording that allows you to experience the scene in the best possible way.
The performance of “August 30, 1996: Nagoya Welfare Pension Hall” was imbued with this work. It is a powerful audience recording. Scorpions in the 90’s have the image of expanding their hands in various fields such as electronic, orchestra co-starring, and acoustic, but “PURE INSTINCT” is just before that. It was a masterpiece that moved the heart with a melancholy melody while sticking to the main line of hard rock. This is the 1996-1998 SCORPIONS. There was no live performance in 1995, and James Kottak joined in early 1996. It was a schedule to take a full two years to go around the world. The performance in Japan was realized in the first half. It was an “Asia” leg that included South Korea and Malaysia. However, their official tour schedule only mentions two performances in Tokyo, and the Nagoya performance of this work was also a show that was forgotten by the officials.
This work recorded at such a site is a power audience that awakens to a powerful core. Recently, it is the latest bullet of the Nagoya DAT master series that has been firing masterpieces, and for SCORPIONS, the joint visit to Japan with Michael Schenker “NAGOYA 1994: DAT MASTER (Shades 1432)” is also a new place in my memory. However, this work is so powerful that it cannot be compared with “NAGOYA 1994”, which has a slightly finer line. Two guitars and a rhythm section rushed in a bundle and made me feel almost no distance. On the other hand, although the balance seems to be a step back from Klaus’s vocals, the lyrics are transmitted firmly thanks to the well-passed voice quality. Actually, there are some scenes that seem to be overpeaking at the beginning because it is too powerful, but it also improved from around the third song “Oh Girl (I Wanna Be With You)” (the field engineer noticed that it was overkill) Maybe). After that, you can thoroughly enjoy the beautiful sound world even if it is powerful.
Greatest hits featuring the precious “PURE INSTINCT” number is drawn with such a thick power sound. Speaking of live works in the 90’s, the official works “BERLIN 1991” and “LIVE BITES” are famous, so let’s organize them while comparing them.

…… And it looks like this. The “LOVEDRIVE” number and “Arajo no Tsuki” are also delicious, but the precious songs are the masterpieces of “PURE INSTINCT”. It was a blissful masterpiece for those who love Lonesome Crow, but immediately after that, SCORPIONS started another style game, so only the ballad “You and I” was taken over. “Oh Girl (I Wanna Be With You)”, “Wild Child” and “Stone in My Shoe” have become limited songs only for this tour. In this work, you can enjoy the live in Japan of such a precious song with a sound that balances beauty and power.
After this visit, SCORPIONS, who challenged other musical forms, had a drastic decrease in opportunities to visit Japan. Until the next opportunity, there will be 8 years of blank space. Looking back, the 1996 performance in Japan may have been Japan and their last honeymoon. そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1996年８月30日：名古屋厚生年金会館」公演。その強力オーディエンス録音です。90年代の蠍団というとエレクトロニック、オーケストラ共演、アコースティックなど、多方面に手を広げていったイメージがありますが、『PURE INSTINCT』はその直前。本筋の正道ハードロックを貫きつつ、哀愁のメロディで心揺さぶる名作でした。まずは、そんな当時のスケジュールを振り返り、ショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1996年ー1998年のSCORPIONS。1995年にはライヴ自体がなく、1996年初頭にジェイムズ・コタックが加入。丸２年をかけてじっくりと世界を巡るスケジュールでした。来日公演が実現したのは前半。韓国やマレーシアも含む「アジア」レッグでした。ただし、彼らの公式ツアースケジュールには東京２公演しか記載されておらず、本作の名古屋公演はおフィシャルから忘れられたショウでもありました。
そんな現場で記録された本作は、力強い芯に目も醒めるパワー・オーディエンス。最近、傑作を連発している名古屋系DATマスター・シリーズの最新弾でして、SCORPIONSですとマイケル・シェンカーとの合同来日盤『NAGOYA 1994: DAT MASTER（Shades 1432）』も記憶に新しいところですが、本作は線のやや細かった『NAGOYA 1994』とは比較ならないほどパワフル。ギター２本とリズム隊が束になってグイグイと突進してきて、ほとんど距離を感じさせません。その一方でクラウスのヴォーカルのみ一歩引いたようなバランスではあるものの、よく通る声質のお陰で歌詞までしっかりと伝わる。実のところ、あまりにパワフルなせいか冒頭ではオーバーピーク気味になるシーンもあるのですが、それも３曲目「Oh Girl (I Wanna Be With You)」辺りから改善（現場エンジニアがやり過ぎに気づいたのかも知れません）。その後はパワフルであっても美しい音世界をじっくりと味わえるのです。
そんな極太パワー・サウンドで描かれるのは、貴重な『PURE INSTINCT』ナンバーをフィーチュアしたグレイテスト・ヒッツ。90年代のライヴ作と言えばオフィシャル作品『BERLIN 1991』『LIVE BITES』が有名ですので、比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『LOVEDRIVE』ナンバーや「荒城の月」も美味しいところですが、やはり貴重なのは『PURE INSTINCT』の名曲群。哀愁の蠍団を愛する方にとっては至福の名作だったわけですが、直後にSCORPIONSが他流試合を始めたこともあって引き継がれたのはバラードの「You and I」だけ。「Oh Girl (I Wanna Be With You)」「Wild Child」「Stone in My Shoe」は、このツアーだけの限定曲になってしまいました。本作は、そんな貴重曲のライヴ・イン・ジャパンを美とパワーの両立サウンドで味わえるのです。
この来日の後、他の音楽形態に挑戦していったSCORPIONSは来日の機会が激減。次の機会まで８年ものブランクが空く事になってしまいました。今から振り返ると、1996年の来日公演は日本と彼らの最後の蜜月だったのかも知れません。本作は、そんなターニング・ポイントの現場をパワフル・サウンドでフル体験できるオリジナル録音。どうぞ、心ゆくまで存分にお楽しみください。
