ゲイリーがブルース路線から一旦離れ、当時流行していたテクノロジーや打ち込みを駆使して製作した’97年の「DARK DAYS IN PARADISE」や’99年の「A DIFFERENT BEAT」は、現在でもファンの間で評価が別れています。特に’97年のライヴは「Out In The Fields」や「Over The HillsAnd Far Away」の復活というサプライズがあったものの、この時のゲイリーはサウンド面だけでなくファッション面でも今までに無いほど明るい出で立ちで、様々な面でファンを驚かせました。
しかしフェスティバル出演などで’99年7月や8月に単発で行われたライヴでは、すでに上記のような実験的試みから従来のゲイリーらしさへと軌道修正が図られており、’90年以降のブルース路線に準じたセットリストや、ゲイリーのギタープレイを中心とした演奏を軸に組み立てられており、「A DIFFERENT BEAT」リリース後のツアーでもこの方向性は維持されました。
今回登場するこの「FIRST BEAT U.K.」は、タイトルが示すとおり「A DIFFERENT BEAT」ツアーの初日を、トレーダー間でも出回っていないオリジナル・マスターを音盤化しています。
曇りの無いクリアな見通しと音の広がりを感じる空気感、ステージにしっかりフォーカスしたバランスよいサウンドなど、音の良さは先日リリースされた「FIRE BEAT」（Shades）にも劣らず、安定した状態で110分間に及ぶライヴを満喫する事が出来ます。
本音源の聴き所は何と言ってもツアー初日ならではの雰囲気とセットリストです。ゲイリーがギターやマイクを確かめながらオーディエンスに話しかけるオープニングでは、ツアー初日らしい程よい緊張感を覚えます。そしてドラムのダリン・ムーニィのカウントでスタートする1曲目は何と「Go On Home」！ テクノロジーと共に現代的なロックの要素を取り入れた「A DIFFERENT BEAT」でも、ファンから「久々にガツンときた曲」と評価されたこの曲のライヴテイクが聴けるだけでも、本作はファンにとって大きな存在価値を持つでしょう。続く「Lost In Your Love」も流れるようなメロディとスリリングな曲想、キレのあるゲイリーのソロがファンの支持を得たアルバム屈指の好ナンバー。「A DIFFERENT BEAT」からの選曲がオープニングを占めるセットリストは結果的にこの初日だけで終わってしまいますが、ここでのライヴ演奏は固さはあるものの充実しており、観客の反応も大きなものがあります。ファンとしても「このままツアーを続けて欲しかった」と思わされる、本音源最大級の聴き所です。
ゲイリーと気心の知れたピート・リーズのベース、ヴィク・マーティンのキーボードが的確にサポートする「Walking By Myself」・「Oh Pretty Woman」の流れは定番曲だけに磐石で、自家薬籠中ともいえる演奏はツアー初日と思えない安定感です。’95年作品の「BLUES FOR GREENY」からチョイスされた「Need Your Love So Bad」や’92年の「AFTER HOURS」からの「Since I Met Your Baby」はゲイリーにとっても特別な楽曲だけに、ここでのプレイも熱を帯びています。続く「Surrender」は新作からの楽曲ですが、ゲイリーの定番曲と並んでも違和感が無い、染み入るようなメロディを10分間にわたって聴き込ませてくれます。ライヴは「All Your Love」・「Still Got The Blues」・「Fire」の名曲3連発でピークを迎えます。情感・泣きのメロディ・曲名どおり火を吹く激しさと、それぞれの曲で使い分けられるゲイリー・ギターの多彩な表情は、ファンをとことん痺れさせるでしょう！
ライヴ終盤の「The Sky Is Crying」からアンコールの「Parisienne Walkways」まではいずれも7分を越える長尺の演奏で、ショウのクライマックスを素晴らしい熱演で盛り上げます。ギターをひたすら聴き込めるディスク2は、どんなファンも「これぞゲイリーのライヴ！」と満足させるはずです。
同時期のライヴを高音質で収めた「FIRE BEAT」でも聴けなかった、初日ならではのレア・ライヴを堪能させる本作は、ゲイリー・マニア必携の一本です。最近は前述した「FIRE BEAT」ほか、’97年ライヴを最高の聴き応えで収めた「DARK DAYS IN GERMANY」など、ゲイリーの’90年代後半の音源も発掘が進んでいます。しかし本作はそれらの中でも特に貴重な音源として、定番の一本になる事でしょう。おなじみのゲイリー・ライヴにレア曲というスパイスがピリッと効いた、刺激的な2枚組・110分間です！
