この当時のゲイリーはTHIN LIZZYを脱退した後、コージー・パウエルのソロアルバムなど様々なセッションワークや、アメリカンテイストを試行したG-FORCEを経て、いよいよ本格的なソロ活動に突入した頃でした。レコード会社を移籍して心機一転したゲイリーにとって、この初来日公演はそれまでのキャリア中でもエポックメイキングな出来事になったと言えるでしょう。もちろん私たち日本のファンにとっても、当時”未だ見ざる大物ギタリスト”だったゲイリーの初見参は重大な事件でした。本作に留められた二つの音源は、そんなゲイリーの気合いとファンの期待がぶつかり合い化学反応した最高のライヴを極上のサウンドで克明に記録した、唯一無二にして至高のドキュメンタリーです。この来日公演の模様は、公式録音された一部の音源を用いて「来日記念盤」と銘打ったオフィシャルライヴアルバムが製作されているものの、「全長版」を「事実のまま」、「最高の音と臨場感」で切り取った本作は、オーディエンス側だからこそ記録できた真実の「ROCKIN’ EVERY NIGHT」であり、初来日音源の最高峰としてふさわしい存在であると、声を大にして明言いたします!

ディスク1・2に収録された1月31日の新宿厚生年金会館公演は、トレーダー間でも一切出回っていない完全初登場マスターをダイレクト使用しています。本音源はDEEP PURPLEの大傑作アイテム「THRILL OF THE CHASE」を収録した同一テーパーの手による音源、と言うだけでファンの皆さんはすでに確信に近い期待を持つ事でしょう。実際の音源はその期待を凌駕する素晴らしい録音です。輝くような音のクリアさ・ワイドに広がるサウンド・各人の細やかなプレイまで聴き手の目の前に供する演奏の輪郭と分離感など、どれをとっても30年前の録音とは思えない最上級のクオリティです。既発の同日別音源にして大定番の「HURRICANE ATTACK」と比較しても、本音源は全てにおいて勝るとも劣らず、最高のひとときを聴き手にもたらしてくれるでしょう!
地方公演を挟んで戻ってきた東京公演とあって、ファンの気持ちの昂ぶりがオープニングからビシビシと伝わってきます。もちろんゲイリーのモチベーションは「End Of The World」や「Wishing Well」から最高潮で、彼の構築する音楽世界をがっちりと支えるバンドの一糸乱れぬ演奏能力の高さが、主役であるゲイリーのクリエイティビティをより高めているようです。観客の高いボルテージ、そしてバンドの演奏の素晴らしさにゲイリーも気を良くしたのか、3曲目「Rockin’ Every Night」の前では、「アリガトウ東京、It’s good to be home again!」とMCし、ファンに感謝の気持ちを表しています。
ゲイリーは各曲のギタープレイにおいて、持てる技術や感情を意のままにコントロールし、さらにダイナミックな技と繊細な巧みさを絶妙に組み立て、ソロとして一気に解き放っています。重厚な「Cold Hearted」のヘヴィネスに、怒りが吹き出すような「Nuclear Attack」の激情、未知なる明日へと一歩踏み出す「I Can’t Wait Until Tomorrow」の力強いメッセージや、瑞々しい情感があふれ出す「Always Gonna Love You」の美しさなど、随所でギター同様に聴く者の心の琴線をかきむしります。ジョン・スローマンのヴォーカルはやや苦しさを感じる場面がありますが、反対にゲイリーが歌う「Wishing Well」などではワイルドで太い声の歌唱が曲にぴったりとはまり込んでいます。ゲイリーのヴォーカルが聴かせる素直な感情表現には、歌の巧拙を越えて唸らされる事でしょう。
ギタリストのソロライヴですので、もちろん歌入りの曲だけが聴き所ではありません。ゲイリーほかイアン・ペイス、ニール・マーレイ、ドン・エイリーらのプレイが高次元で激突するインストナンバー「Hurricane」は圧巻の一言です。PAから会場全体へ轟く一音一音がリアルに蘇り、聴き手の心もダイレクトに射貫く事でしょう。曲から続くイアン・ペイスの大迫力ドラムソロも超が付くほどクリアーに収録しています。ライヴの後半「White Knuckles」では”Mr, Guitar Crazy”の肩書き通り狂おしいほどのギタープレイが繰り広げられ、聴き手の度肝を抜いてくれます。圧倒的な音圧とプレイは最後まで緩むことがありません。アンコールで取り上げられる「Don’t Take Me For A Loser」や「Higher Ground」での、まるで分厚い音の壁が迫り来るような音像には、誰もが驚きあ然とさせられるでしょう!

ディスク3と4に収められた来日最終日・2月1日の渋谷公会堂公演は、数ある音源の中でも同日のベストテイクと絶賛された「BRITISH ATTACK」のマスターを再度使用し、この絶品テイクを品位と格式にふさわしい姿で蘇らせています。テープの採音段階からやり直してフルリマスターされた音源は、既発の豊かな中低音や均整の取れた音像を活かしつつも高音がきれいにすっきりと抜け、霧が晴れたようなクリアさと見通しを実現しています。音が晴れ渡った分、臨場感や空気感もまた一段とスケールアップし、会場中に響くゲイリーのギターとヴォーカルも最高の色彩と鮮やかさで冴えわたっています。本オーディエンス・マスターもディスク1・2と同一のテーパーによる収録なので、機材や録音手法に由来する音質差はほとんど無く、整然とした統一感のもとで最後まで安心してライヴに身を任せる事ができるでしょう。
前日同様ハイレベルなメンバーがしのぎを削り合うスポンテニアスなライヴはオープニングの「End Of The World」から痺れるような聴き応えで、全ての聴き手をノックアウトする事は間違いありません! 徐々に激しさを増していくドラマティックな「Cold Hearted」に、スリリングな「Nuclear Attack」、そして12分を越える「I Can’t Wait Until Tomorrow」と名曲名演が連発されるショウの前半から中盤は、一瞬たりとも耳を離せない名場面です! いずれの曲でもゲイリーのギターソロとドンのキーボードソロはライン録音並のクオリティで収録されており、クリアで艶のある音色にファンは誰もが聴き惚れてしまうはずです。
ライヴの後半、ゲイリーのギターが猛然と唸りを上げる「White Knuckles」から8分間に渡るギターソロは壮絶の一語です。この流れのまま分厚く図太い音色で畳み掛けられる「Rockin’ And Rollin’」「Back On The Streets」は、まるで鉄の暴風が吹き荒れるかのような凄みがあります!
ゲイリーらステージ側からの「押し」と同時に、オーディエンスとの双方向的なやり取りが生々しく記録されているのは、本音源のような高品位オーディエンス録音ならではの魅力でしょう。アンコールの「Gonna’ Break My Heart Again」曲中で繰り広げられるギターとオーディエンスの掛け合いや、「ゲイリー」コールが客席から延々とリフレインされるアンコールブレイクでの臨場感も全てが極上のドキュメントであり、聴き逃す余地は欠片もありません。
来日公演最後の曲は「Sunset」です。「1984年の2月か3月には戻ってきたいと思う。また友達に会えるのを楽しみにしている。皆にこの曲を捧げます」というMCから始まるこの日最後にして最高の熱演は、6分に及ぶ演奏の全編を通して聴き手の涙を誘わずにはおきません。前日はカバー曲の「Higher Ground」がショウの最後に取り上げられましたが、「Sunset」で締めくくられるショウのドラマ性はひとしおで、ライヴは大きな感動の渦の中でエンディングを迎えます。最後に観客から発せられる万雷の拍手とゲイリーコールも、心震えるひと時をいや増して演出する事でしょう。
