Even in the long history of WHITESNAKE, which is over 30 years old, it was particularly hot and I heard the taste of blues with a dense sound, after all, it will be ’78 years right after the band was launched. At the time David Cavadair developed activities from solo to the band, he really showed off “music he wants to do” with a performance that burned burning enthusiasm and ambition.
In that ’78 live, various wonderful live sound sources are known, including official live work “LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH ODEON”. Among them, “VINTAGE COLLECTION 1978” which compiled the line and source of the same year is one essential piece now to know the initial WHITESNAKE. Alongside that “VINTAGE COLLECTION 1978”, the sound source that fans must listen is this work “STEAL THE NIGHT”.

This work, from the British tour of the fall of 1978 that went right after WHITESNAKE announced “TROUBLE”, the performance of Henry “Victoria · Hall” Staffordshire State on 7th November, a super high sound quality stereo sound board Recording is recorded.
The sound source of the same day, “MUST BE GYPSY IN ME” which was released from the Langley label and surprised the fans greatly existed. This work produced a sound directly from the master cassette. Although the slightly basked texture felt an analogous sound, the already-released taste was a delicious sound, but this board is a big feature, as the “analog likeness” in a good sense as it is, the sound image which is clearer and the outlook improved better. Furthermore, the deterioration of the material which has already been (slightly) worried has also been largely eliminated, and it is no exaggeration to say that the listening response goes beyond the official work “LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH ODEON” mentioned above! This is the strength of master quality. You can enjoy it with a direct effect like a real hot spot, ’78 years live!

As for the original work, this work also starts from the sound check before the performance on the same day. Vocal · mike and guitar will be bursting around the drum at an extremely close range. That real sound will be further refined with the live feature! From the opening that “Come On” which started starting with fade-in, suddenly starts without suffering, the listener will be out of chaos by everyone!
Musical tones that were officially adapted to the breathable Cavadill songs, expressive rich Bernie and Mickey guitars with each face floating, are the best words. “Might Just Take Your Life” · “Lie Down” which John · Rhodes puts out the play immediately after subscription is wonderfulness suitable for the title of “Maestro”. Also, in these songs, Bernie is a great success not only for guitar but also for vocals. I listen to plenty of the ensemble of the era when it seemed like a band in a true sense. Following “Is not No Love In The Heart Of The City” and “Trouble”, Mickey ‘s solo leads us to the explosion of’ Steal Away ‘which is not recorded official. “Mistreated” with more than 10 minutes of impression should intensely disturb the listener’s heart! Instrument Jam “Belgian Tom’s Hat Trick” makes Barney and Mickey’s twin leads enjoy breath-taking play and makes John’s solo entertain with a surprising sound like Thunder’s roaring. The hot play of “Take Me With You” pouring in with the momentum of anger will greatly boost not only the stage and the audience but also the listener’s feelings!

Although the departure was a release in two sets, in this work it is limited to the limit of disk capacity, “Rock Me Ba, by” and “Breakdown / Whitesnake Boogie” of the encore, with 1 CD crammed with sound until the minute limit (Of course, there are no sounds or performances cut off from the contents of the previous episode!).
“VINTAGE COLLECTION 1978” which summarizes the line sound source of the same period was also wonderful, but I can not find anything that makes this WHITESNAKE live all hear with such sound quality and performance! For WHITESNAKE fans all over the world, this work is a literal masterpiece. If you do not own this work, I’d like you to get it on this occasion!

30年を越えるWHITESNAKEの長い歴史でも、特に熱く、ブルースの滋味を濃密なサウンドで聴かせたのは、何と言ってもバンド発足直後の’78年でしょう。デイヴィッド・カヴァデールがソロからバンドへと活動を発展させた当時は、本当に「自分のやりたい音楽」を、燃えるような熱気と野心をたぎらせた演奏で披露していました。
その’78年のライヴでは、公式ライヴ作品「LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH ODEON」をはじめとして、各種の素晴らしいライヴ音源が知られています。中でも同年のライン・ソースを集大成した「VINTAGE COLLECTION 1978」は、初期WHITESNAKEを知る上で、今や欠かせない一本です。その「VINTAGE COLLECTION 1978」と並んで、ファンが聴かねばならない音源が本作「STEAL THE NIGHT」なのです。

本作はWHITESNAKEが「TROUBLE」を発表した直後に行った1978年秋のイギリスツアーより、11月7日のスタッフォードシャー州ヘンリー”ヴィクトリア・ホール”公演を、関係者流出の超高音質ステレオ・サウンドボード録音で収録しています。
同日の音源には、かつてLangleyレーベルからリリースされ、ファンを大いに驚かせた「MUST BE GYPSY IN ME」が存在しました。本作はそのマスター・カセットからダイレクトに音を起こしたもの。やや篭った質感がアナログらしい音色を感じさせた既発も味わい深いサウンドでしたが、本盤は良い意味での”アナログらしさ”はそのままに、よりクリアで見通しが良くなった音像が大きな特徴。さらに既発で（僅かながら）気になった素材の劣化も大きく解消されており、その聴き応えは上記した公式作品「LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH ODEON」を越えると言っても過言ではない！　これこそマスター・クオリティの強み。熱気溢れる’78年ライヴをリアルに、独り占めするようなダイレクトさで楽しめます！

本作も既発同様、同日開演前のサウンドチェックからスタート。ドラムを中心に、ヴォーカル・マイクそしてギターが、とんでもない間近さで炸裂します。そのリアル・サウンドはライヴ本編でさらに磨きが掛かります！　既発はフェイドインでスタートしていた「Come On」が、フェイドなしでいきなり始まるオープニングから、聴き手は誰もが悶絶してしまうでしょう！
息づかいまで生々しいカヴァデールの歌、それぞれの顔が浮かんできそうなほどに表情豊かなバーニーとミッキーのギターと、公式に準じたミックスを施された楽音は最高の一言です。加入直後のジョン・ロードがプレイをほとばしらせる「Might Just Take Your Life」・「Lie Down」は、”マエストロ”の尊称にふさわしい素晴らしさ。またこれらの楽曲では、バーニーがギターだけでなくヴォーカルでも大活躍。本当の意味でバンドらしかった時代のアンサンブルをたっぷり聴かせます。「Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City」と「Trouble」に続いては、ミッキーのソロに導かれ、公式ライヴ未収録の「Steal Away」が炸裂。10分を越える感動の「Mistreated」は、聴き手の心を激しくかき乱すはず！　インスト・ジャム「Belgian Tom’s Hat Trick」は、バーニーとミッキーのツインリードが息の合ったプレイを堪能させ、ジョンのソロも雷鳴が轟くような驚きのサウンドで楽しませます。怒涛の勢いでなだれ込む「Take Me With You」の熱いプレイは、ステージやオーディエンスだけでなく、聴き手の気持ちも大いに沸騰させるでしょう！

既発は2枚組でのリリースでしたが、本作ではアンコールの「Rock Me Ba、by」と「Breakdown / Whitesnake Boogie」まで、ディスク容量の限界、80分ギリギリまで音を詰め込んだ1CDでアイテム化されています（もちろん既発の内容から削られた音や演奏はありません！）。
同時期のライン音源をまとめた「VINTAGE COLLECTION 1978」も素晴らしかったですが、この時期のWHITESNAKEライヴを丸ごと、これほどの音質と演奏で聴かせるものはちょっと見当たらない！　世界中のWHITESNAKEファンにとって、本作は文字通りのマスターピースです。もし本作を未所有だという方は、この機会に是非ゲットして頂きたいと思います！
