大きなメンバー・チェンジを経て、新たにコージー・パウエルやメル・ギャレーを迎えたWHITESNAKEは、’82年12月10日のサザンプトン公演から「SAINTS & SINNERS」ツアーをスタートします。当時のWHITESNAKEはロンドンの”ハマースミス・オデオン”などのように、格式ある会場での連続公演をしばしば披露しているのが特徴。この「SAINTS & SINNERS」ツアーでは、開始直後の3公演目から5公演にかけて、ニューキャッスルの”シティ・ホール公演”を3連続で行っています。本作ではこの’82年12月13日・14日・15日のライヴを、すべてマスター・クオリティを確信させる優れたオーディエンス録音で収録しています。初期WHITESNAKEの重要なキーパーソンであるミッキー・ムーディとコージー・パウエルが同時に在籍していたこのラインナップでは、プレスCD2枚組＋プレスDVDで登場した「ULTIMATE SIN」や「LIVE…IN THE WEST OF RHINE」などの大傑作タイトルが存在します。しかしツアー極初期の熱気あふれる本国ライヴを収めたアイテムでは、本作こそがボリューム・音質・演奏内容でトップだと断言できる、別格クラスの一本です！

ディスク1・2へ収録された13日テイクは演奏が非常に近く、全編に渡って安定感に富んだサウンドでライブを堪能できます。ドラムとベースそしてオルガンの音色と、バンド・サウンドのバランスは絶妙の一言。特に卓越した音像で録音されているコージーのドラムはファンを喜ばせるでしょう。ツアー初期ならではの初々しいテンションをキープしつつ、ライヴを2回こなしてカンを取り戻した演奏と、バンドの状態も理想的。カヴァデールの歌唱もいよいよエンジンが掛かった絶好調パフォーマンスで「Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues」や「Don’t Break My Heart Again」など、優れたパフォーマンスを理想的なサウンドで楽しめます。
同時にまだ若干の固さが残る部分もまたツアー初期らしい聴き所。「Ready An’ Willing」のイントロでコージーだけしか入れず思い切り演奏がずれたり、「Here I Go Again」ではカヴァデールが歌詞を失念するなど、珍しい場面も確認できます。しかしカヴァデールは歌い直しながら「思い出させてくれてありがとう」とオーディエンスに述べており、場内の雰囲気も良い事が伝わります。同様に「Lovehunter」ではギターソロ前のリフレインの部分で構成があやふやになる場面も聴くことができます。しかしこの日のミッキーのソロは珍しいメロディが組み込まれ、観客は大満足で演奏に聴き入っています。ライヴのハイライトを盛り上げる「Fool For Your Loving」は、この編成ならではの男らしくパワフルで重厚なサウンドが堪りません！　ラストの「Wine, Women An’ Song」は残念ながら途中でフェイドアウトしてしまいますが、この日のみで単品リリースされても不思議ではない、聴き応えに溢れた録音です。

続くディスク3・4の14日音源も驚くほどクリアで、均整の取れた高音質で収録されています。特に「Don’t Break My Heart Again」からはダイレクト感が大きく向上し、より近く明瞭に捉えられたサウンドは「こんなに凄い録音があったのか」と聴き手を感嘆させるでしょう。
オープニングから畳み掛けるように「Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues」と「Rough An’ Ready」を一気に演奏した後、一息ついたカヴァデールが発する「昨日は素晴らしかったね」というMCは、本作を手に入れたファンならば誰もが納得できる言葉。しかしこの14日の演奏も前日同様に素晴らしく、「Ready An’ Willing」も極上のサウンドで繰り広げられます（この日は前日のようなイントロのズレも当然ありません）。同曲は3分台でコージーがアドリブを交えたプレイを聴かせ、前半の大きな聴き所となっています。前述したように「Don’t Break My Heart Again」以降音質は目に見えて向上し、「Lovehunter」中盤のコリン・ホッジキンソンとミッキー・ムーディのソロパートは、この時代におけるオーディエンス録音の極地と表現できるほど凄い音で楽しめます。同曲の締めくくりではカヴァデールとミッキーが息のあった掛け合いを披露し、音質にふさわしい絶品の演奏を聴かせてくれます。この日最大の聴き所は何と言っても「Crying In The Rain」！　このツアー以降定番となる同曲も、ここでは初期らしい独特の魅力が聴き所。さらにダイレクトでクリアな音色はメル・ギャレーのギターも克明に聴き取る事ができ、誇張ではなく「発掘モノのハーフ・オフィシャルとしてそのまま使えるのでは？」と思わせます。
この日はアンコールまで演奏・録音とも高いレベルを維持しており、厚みのある音色で堪能できるムーディな「Thank You」、そして11分間を越える「Wine, Women An’ Song」は感動的です。前日のソースでは「Wine, Women An’ Song」の途中でフェイドアウトしていましたが、ここでは後半のメンバー紹介まできちんと聴くことができます。本録音はコージーのドラムソロの後半と「Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City」前半部にテープチェンジによる大きなカットがあり、残念ながら不完全収録なのですが、優れた音質とノリにのった演奏は聴き手を大いに魅了するでしょう。

ディスク5・6には3連続公演最終日となった15日テイクが収められています。この日の模様は過去にPower Gateレーベルから「BITES BACK IN THE UK」というタイトルでリリースされ、ファンからは「’82年ライヴの決定版」と高い評価を受けていました。本作ではこの音源を大元のテープ・マスターから全面的なリマスターの上で再度音盤化しています。見通しの良さに各楽器の良好なバランスはもちろんの事、豊かな低音が生み出すどっしりとしたサウンドも印象的で、コージーとコリン・ホッジキンソンのリズムにも迫力を与えています。単品リリースの実績は伊達ではなく、この15日テイクが演奏・音質の面で最もバランスが取れた内容と思われ、収録時間も長く、全編通じて高いまとまりで3連続公演の最終日を楽しませてくれます。バンドは最終日とあってより気合が入っており、「Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues」・「Rough An’ Ready」そして「Ready An’ Willing」に「Don’t Break My Heart Again」と、ドライヴ感満点の演奏を炸裂させています。しかし「Here I Go Again」では押しまくる演奏から一転し、メリハリの効いたプレイで聴き手を唸らせます（この曲ではアナログ・テープならではの程好い丸みを帯びた音像が、温みのある空気を感じさせます）。
前述したようにリズムにパンチの効いたサウンドであるため、コージーのドラムソロは大変な迫力があります。M.S.G.時代から継続して「633 Squadron」と「1812 Overture」を一度に聴かせるソロは、何度聴いても圧巻の内容です。やはりコージーのプレイが目立つ「Fool For Your Loving」では、メル・ギャレーがギターにコーラスにと大活躍です。当時のバンド・サウンドは、イアン・ペイスやバーニー・マースデン在籍時とも、ジョン・サイクス加入後とも違うこの時期ならでは個性的で独特なもの。パワフルで男性的なテイストは、まさにブリティッシュ・ハードの王道と言うべき素晴らしさです。

一般的には”過渡期”として地味に捉えられるメンバー構成かも知れませんが、本作に収められた3公演からはスポンティニアスなムードの中にも和気あいあいとした雰囲気が伝わり、バンドが良い状態であった事が判ります。また全体のアレンジが確立されていないツアー初期だからこそ、毎日のライヴで演奏が磨かれ、バンドの演奏力が高まっていく様子も確かめられます。これが本作最大の面白さと言えるでしょう。優れたアイテムが多い「SAINTS & SINNERS」ツアーでも3公演・6枚組のボリュームを誇る本作は特に大きな存在感！　ファンの皆さんには日ごとにリフレッシュし充実していくWHITESNAKEの姿を、本作でじっくりとご堪能頂きたいと思います。未聴の皆さんにとっては特別価格での再入荷となるこの機会こそ、本作をゲットするまたとないチャンスです！
