In 1974, Bernie Marsden and Frank Aiello, who participated in UFO and Cozy’s single “Na Na Na”, led by the rhythm section of the second Jeff Beck Group such as Cozy Powell and Clive Chaman. The official recording of the legendary band “Cozy Powells Hammer”, where famous British rock players gathered based on Cozy’s network, including Aiello and Don Airey who just started his career as a professional keyboardist. Take is the world’s first appearance. The reel master marked “COZY … HAMMER”, which is said to have been owned by Cozy, is directly converted into a sound board (the photo of the reel case is posted on the inner jacket). The recording time is 41 minutes and 45 seconds, and all 9 tracks are recorded. Three of them contain three versions of Cozy’s fourth phantom single, Le Souk. The sixth song, Living A Lie, was later re-recorded and recorded on Cozy’s second solo album “Tilt” (this edition contains an original take different from the “Tilt version”). , The other tracks have a shocking content that all the songs themselves appear for the first time. The sound quality is recorded with the highest quality stereo line recording, and it is the highest class sound that can withstand official use.
Everyone will be taken aback by the funky backing play of Take Your Time, which starts with Cozy’s voice count of the first song. The performance of the strongest rhythm section, which is funky and surely rocking of Cozy and Clive, which is familiar in JBG, and the melodious play of Bernie over it are truly exquisite. The play with excellent sense by Don’s electric piano is also the best. The instrument of the second song, which starts from the real voice count again and is full of a sense of speed, is supposed to be a song, but it is of a quality that can be established as an instrument number. This is also a funky hard rock number reminiscent of the good songs of early Whitesnake, and you can enjoy the best performance with a tremendous groove feeling throughout the whole volume. Don’s keyboard is also a big success than the first song, and a long solo like Bernie is prepared in the latter half of the 2nd minute. The ensemble play that the whole band in the latter half of the song folds is just overwhelming. Hard-rock guitar riffs roar from an intro like Don’s synth test-play, and the entire band plunges into a heavy and sophisticated ensemble. This may also be supposed to be vocal, but it is a masterpiece that has a charm that can be used as an instrumental number. Don’s synth solo explodes in the 3rd minute, Cozy hears terrible drumming, and it seems that he is listening to Coliseum 2 which is closer to heavy rock. Frank’s soulful vocals are featured from the 4th song. The backing performance is a different take from the backing number of the first song, and you can enjoy a completely different performance from the sound image to the mix. Don’s electric piano is also mixed in a larger size. Bernie’s flowing solo play in the latter half of the song is also excellent. Bad Kid is a slightly different authentic groove rock in this group, featuring Frank’s vocals and Don’s intense piano on the loudspeakers. As mentioned above, Living A Lie is a famous ballad that was reprinted with the same Frank & Bernie in “Tilt” six years later. I am very impressed by the soulful and charming and tasty Frank vocals. In addition to the different arrangements, this version is recorded at 7 minutes 30 seconds, which is 2 minutes longer than the “Tilt” recording version, and you can listen to vocals, long crying guitar solos and larger scale developments and hot performances. .. Since then, the 3 takes are Cozy’s 4th phantom single Le Souk recorded under the production of Mickie Most. Includes a final version, a 3-minute single edit version (playing differently), and an outtake that begins with a real voice count. It is a powerful and melodious instrumental number that does not feel strange even if it is recorded in “Over The Top” featuring a lot of Don’s keyboard, and a female chorus appears in the middle like “Dance With The Devil”. The performances, sound images, arrangements, and mixes of all three takes are quite different, so each is a listening place. The day will finally come when you can hear this phantom number … Avid Cozy fans may be surprised and at the same time feel some kind of emotion. A must-listen title representing this year, which can be said to be a shock since “Rough And Ready Reel Masters” that stunned rock fans all over the world, is now available on a limited press CD.
