「Blue Moves」を前年秋にリリースしたエルトンが、1977年5月2日から6日連続で行ったロンドンはレインボウ・シアターでのチャリティ・コンサートの最終日、5月7日公演を約2時間26曲に渡って極上レベルのサウンドボード録音で完全収録。音質はオフィシャル級で、どのレベルのファンでも楽しめるような素晴らしい内容です。これまで出回っていなかった音源であり、前年から始められたバックバンド抜きの、ピアノの弾き語りのみによるライブはファン絶対必聴です。ショウ後半ではレイ・クーパーが登場、息の合った2人だけの演奏を楽しく聴くことができます。流出音源でありながら、音の鮮度・バランス、共に申し分なく、ライン録音でありながら、硬すぎることのない広がりのある豊かな感触の音像は、この時期のエルトンの圧巻のパフォーマンスと70年代後半のセットを理想的なサウンドで再現してくれます。歓声はうっすらと聴こえますが、完全に曲間が沈黙してしまうわけではないので、こちらもストレス無く、一気にのコンサート全体を大変気持ち良く聴くことができます。ヒスノイズの少なめの抜けの良いサウンドは最高で、完全なモニターミックスで収録されているため、サビのパートのコーラスなどのボーカル・エフェクトのオン・オフも含め、ライン録音ならではの楽しさをたっぷりと楽しめます。ファンにとってはまさに一生モノと断言できる、宝物のような１枚が登場です。

エルトンとレイ・クーパーの２人によるライブは、今日まで幾度となく行われてきた。我々日本のファンにとっては、1995年の2月の日本公演は今でも心の中に深く刻まれた素晴らしいライブであったと言っても過言ではなかろう。また1979年５月にはロシアでも公演を行い、この時の模様は、オフステージの様子も収録されておりドキュメンタリー作品と言った方がいいかもしれないが、『To Russia With Elton』というタイトルで、オフィシャルで発表されている。本音源はそのロシアでの公演から遡ること2年前の1977年5月2日から7日までの6日間、ロンドンのレインボーシアターで行われたうちの最終日にあたる7日の公演を極上のサウンドボード録音で完全収録している。この日の音源は、以前「Rainbow Rock」、「Rocket Man Over The Rainbow 」というタイトルで発売されていたが、今や入手困難になっているので今回のリリースはファンにとってはうれしい限りである。この日のオープニングは彼の２枚目のアルバム『Elton John』に収録されている名曲Your Songでスタートし、同アルバムから続けてThe Greatest Discovery, Border Song を演奏している。前年に発売したアルバム『Blue Moves』(邦題:蒼い肖像)からは、Cage The Songbird, 更にはDisc 2の4,6,7,9,10を披露している。この日のライブでの聴き所はグラディス・ナイト＆ザ・ヒップス(1967年)やマービン・ゲイ(1968年)が歌い大ヒットした「I heard It Through The Grapevine」(邦題: 悲しいうわさ)である。彼のオリジナルではなくノーマン・ホイットフィールドとバレット・ストロングの共作であるが、お気に入りの曲なのであろう。1984年には12インチシングルで発売した「Who Wears These Shoes?」のＢ面にこの曲を収録している。もちろんその他の曲も全て素晴らしい演奏であることは言うまでもない。この初期の２人による貴重なライブを素晴らしい音質で楽しめるので、是非聴いてもらいたい。
