The opening night of the Rolling Stones’ first performance in Japan, which will be handed down as an eternal day for Japanese fans. Since it was February 14, it may have been the finest Valentine’s chocolate that only Stones fans who were present on that day could taste at Tokyo Dome.
Since the first performance in Japan showed excitement that became a social phenomenon, it was blessed with materials for the latter half of the tour, such as leaked sound sources and images for TV broadcasting and radio broadcasting later, but the first half is audience recording. Is reliable. The name set “DOME ON WHEELS” has fulfilled the wishes of such a maniac. Both the first release more than 10 years ago and the re-release more than 5 years ago were so famous that they sold out in a blink of an eye.
Audience recording that captured the pattern of the first day was highly evaluated while receiving the most attention in such a set. Although it was a sound source that had been released by then, mania was delighted with the significant improvement in quality by showing the recording from the master cassette for the first time. After all, it is a memorial day record for Japanese Stones fans. The most popular of the “DOME ON WHEELS” sets.
Therefore, this time, the same sound source was released as a single unit for the first time. Even when it recurred in 2015, it was re-released after carefully brushing up the master cassette, so it was well received that it was easier to hear than the 2010 version. However, six years have passed since its release (it’s early …), so this time we will make full use of the latest technology in 2021 to brush up from the master cassette again. Graf Zeppelin was in charge of the work.
In this case, the concept is to create a sound that goes between the 2010 version and the 2015 version. As I mentioned earlier, it was very well received even during the latter remastering, but this time it’s a more natural and less tiring finish. The original recording state itself was very clear, so I think this work could have extended the features of the sound source to a better state.
More importantly, the missing part of this sound source was compensated for by using another audience recording on the same day for the first time. The first day sound source that I heard in “DOME ON WHEELS” was highly praised, but it was desired to make up for the cut part. That didn’t happen even in the 2015 edition, but this time Graf Zeppelin has made a detailed compensation.
First of all, the songs from “Happy” to “Paint It Black” are supplemented with the bonus board “THE FIRST NIGHT” that came with the nostalgic box set “OUT OF CONTROL LICKS JAPAN TOUR 2003”. In addition, after the 2015 edition, the first day title “TOKYO DOME 1990 1ST NIGHT: UNCIRCULATED MASTER”, which attracted attention as a new original sound source, has also been released. So, from “Mixed Emotions” to “Honky Tonk Women”, there is a patch from this title between encores. With this, the last move that was desired for the re-release of the first day sound source of “DOME ON WHEELS” has finally been added.
Even if I ask it again, it’s really funny that the cautiousness of the performance stands out on this day. It seems that Mick and others are nervous for a while after the performance, and it started to unravel around “Miss You”, and even in the new song corner at that time such as “Mixed Emotions” (unlike the United States that was around the previous year). It must have been good news that he showed a very enthusiastic reaction.
Nevertheless, in “Honky Tonk Women”, Mick’s singing was unstable, and the scene that I couldn’t think I had visited solo two years ago is smiling. And now it’s also the record of Charlie’s first live performance in Japan, and it’s of a different importance.

日本のファンにとって永遠の一日として語り継がれるであろうローリング・ストーンズ初来日公演のオープニング・ナイト。それは2月14日であったことから、当日居合わせたストーンズ・ファンだけが東京ドームで味わうことの出来た極上のバレンタイン・チョコだったのかもしれません。
初来日公演は社会現象となるほどの盛り上がりを見せたことから、後にテレビ放送やラジオ放送に流出音源と映像といった具合でツアー後半の日程のマテリアルに恵まれていますが、前半はと言えばオーディエンス録音が頼り。そんなマニアの願いを叶えてみせたのがあの名セット「DOME ON WHEELS」。10年以上前の初回リリースと5年以上前の再リリースはどちらもあっという間に売り切れてしまったほどの名盤でした。
そんなセットの中でも一番の注目を浴びつつ、なおかつ高い評価を得たのが初日の模様を捉えたオーディエンス録音。それまでにもリリースされていた音源でありながら、初めてマスター・カセットからの収録を実現してみせたことで大幅なクオリティ・アップにマニアは大喜び。何しろ日本のストーンズ・ファンにとってメモリアルな日の記録です。「DOME ON WHEELS」セットの中でも一番の人気を誇ったもの。
そこで今回は初めて同音源を単体リリース。既に2015年再発の際にもマスター・カセットに丁寧なブラッシュアップを加えた上で再リリースしたことから、2010年版よりも聞きやすくなったのだと好評を博したものです。しかし、そのリリースからも6年もの歳月が経過（早いものですね…）したことから、今回は2021年の最新技術を駆使して改めてマスター・カセットからのブラッシュアップを敢行。その作業を担当してくれたのはGraf Zeppelin。
今回の場合は2010年版と2015年版の中間を行く音作りというのがコンセプト。先に触れたように、後者のリマスター時でも非常に評判が良かったのですが、今回はより自然で聞き疲れしない仕上がりとなっています。元々の録音状態自体が非常にクリアーでしたので、今回の作業によってさらに抜けのいい状態へと、音源の素性を引き伸ばすことが出来たのではないでしょうか。
それ以上に重要なのは、本音源の欠損個所に対し、初めて同日別のオーディエンス録音を用いて補填してみせたこと。「DOME ON WHEELS」で聞けた初日音源は激賞された一方でカット個所の補填が望まれていました。それが2015年版でも叶わなかった訳ですが、今回は満を持してGraf Zeppelinが緻密な補填を行ってくれています。
まず「Happy」から「Paint It Black」にかけての曲間ですが、そこには懐かしのボックスセット「OUT OF CONTROL LICKS JAPAN TOUR 2003」に付属していたボーナス盤「THE FIRST NIGHT」にて補填。それに2015年版の後には新たな独自音源として話題を呼んだ初日タイトル「TOKYO DOME 1990 1ST NIGHT: UNCIRCULATED MASTER」もリリースされています。そこで「Mixed Emotions」から「Honky Tonk Women」にかけてと、アンコールの合間は本タイトルからパッチ。これで「DOME ON WHEELS」初日音源の再リリースに際して望まれていた最後の一手がようやく加えられたことになります。
改めて聞いてみても本当にこの日は演奏の慎重ぶりが際立っていて微笑ましい。ミックなど開演後しばらくは緊張気味である様子がありありと伝わってきますし、それが「Miss You」辺りからほぐれ始め、「Mixed Emotions」を始めとした当時の新曲コーナーでも（前年回ったアメリカと違って）非常に熱狂的な反応を見せたことも好材料だったはず。
それでもなお「Honky Tonk Women」ではミックの歌い出しが不安定だったりと、ソロで二年前に訪れていたとは思えないような場面が微笑ましい。そして今となってはチャーリーが初めて日本で行ったライブ・パフォーマンスの記録でもあり、また違った重要性を持つことになってしまいました。
程よい距離感の音像がもたらす独特な聞き心地の良さと、何より1990年の東京ドームでのオーディエンス録音としては別格のクオリティを誇った名録音が遂にブラッシュアップされて初の単体リリース。これは絶対にお見逃しなく！
