1972年のアメリカ・ツアーが終了した後にBBCが放送した音楽番組でのストーンズ特集を収録。「OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST」自体、この時代の有名な音楽番組であるが、この時はストーンズの最新映像を中心に、これまでのストーンズの歴史を振り返る趣向のプログラム。「Honky Tonk Women」まではハイドパークの演奏シーン（前座を務めたクリムゾンのロバート・フリップの姿が一瞬映る）や「ギミー・シェルター」からの「Jumping Jack Flash」などお馴染みの映像が多いが、テレビ番組「Ready, Steady, Go」からの3曲が比較的貴重。以前からこの番組でのストーンズの演奏シーンを集めた画質の良いブートビデオが出回っていたが、画質はそれより更に鮮明。それだけにPaint It Blackのシーンの途中でナレーションが被さるのは残念。また「Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?」のプロモ・フィルムはロイヤル・アルバート・ホールでのライヴ・シーンを編集したヴァージョンが収録されており、これは「スーパースターズ・イン・コンサート」等でもお馴染みのもの。

むしろこの番組の最大の目玉はツアーリハーサル映像で、これはアメリカンツアー開始前にモントルーの映画館で行ったリハーサルの模様を収録しており、音質も非常に良いことからアナログブート「BLIGHT LIGHTS BIG CITY」に収められるなどお馴染みのもの。映像の方も90年代に入ってからドイツのテレビ番組「ビート・クラブ」で放送されたヴァージョンが良好な画質で出回っていますが、今回のヴァージョンはそれより更に鮮明な画像で収録されています。惜しむらくは入手したコピーが「John’s Jam」 の途中で切れており、残りの部分は収録されていないこと。しかし、良心的な事に、その残りの部分を例の「ビート・クラブ」のヴァージョンで補っており、リハーサル中にわざわざアフレコで収録した「Loving Cup」のシーンもそれで観ることができます。しかし、この映像の画質を比べると、本編の画質との差が歴然としており、今回の映像がいかに鮮明かわかります。雰囲気はいかにもリハーサルらしいもので、まだホーン・セクションやニッキー・ホプンキンスが加わっておらず、かなりルーズな演奏。しかしそれでも楽しめるのは一緒に映像が伴っているからでしょう。全体的にはマニア向けの内容だが、この映像がこれだけの画質で見れることにマニアなら感慨を感じてしまうのではないでしょうか。おすすめの一枚です。
