そしてもう一つのエバーグリーン・ライブアルバム「EUROPEAN TOUR 1973 – KBFH BROADCAST 1974 & 1988」。こちらは1969年と違ってオフィシャルなリリースが実現せず、代わりにラジオ放送が実現したことで知れ渡った70年代ストーンズの頂点を捉えた音源。今でこそオフィシャルの「BRUSSELS AFFAIR」が存在しますが、それとは収録ショーが基本的に異なっており、結果として今なお音源の価値が色褪せていません。それでなくとも「NASTY MUSIC」を皮切りとして「EUROPE 73」といった名作ブートの元になった伝説的なラジオ放送。マニアであればそれらのタイトルで必ずや聞いたであろう超定番音源であり、「GET YER YA-YA’S OUT!」がストーンズ・オフィシャルの定番ならこちらはアンダーグラウンド界におけるド定番。
それにLPはもとより、CDでも「NASTY MUSIC」や「EUROPE 73」名の下に数えきれないほどのアイテムがリリース続け、それらの内どれかを聞いたことがある、ひょっとしたら複数のアイテムを所有しているマニアだっておられることはず。それほどのド定番音源ですので、2017年に「EUROPEAN TOUR 1973 – KBFH BROADCAST 1974 & 1988」が登場した際、マニアには「今になってどこが違うの？」的に映ったことでしょう。
ところが本タイトルは過去に星の数ほどリリースされてきたラジオ音源「KBFH」73ヨーロッパ収録アイテムのどれよりも、非常にナチュラルで素直な音質で収録されていたことがマニアを驚かせました。特に1974年版放送にはそれが顕著に表れており、過去にリリースされてきた「NASTY MUSIC」や「EUROPE 73」CDアイテムが大なり小なり不自然なイコライズを介していたのでは？と思えたほどナチュラルで抜けの良い状態で収録されていたのです。

1973ツアー・ラジオ音源がまさかのベスト・バージョンで収録されたと知れるや否や、「EUROPEAN TOUR 1973 – KBFH BROADCAST 1974 & 1988」は一大ベストセラーと化してネット上でも高額で取引される有様。当然Sold Out後は再発を望む声が雪崩のように押し寄せており、ファースト・エディションとはジャケット・デザインのまったく違うセカンド・エディションが三か月後に登場。しかし違いはジャケだけではありませんでした。これまた74年版で顕著だった（何しろ1970年代のカセットによる放送録音ですし）いくつかの細かなノイズを削除し、元々が文句なしな音源にさらなる磨きをかけたのです。ただでさえ74年版放送と88年版放送をカップリングした充実の内容となっていた二枚組がさらなるアッパー版へと昇格した結果、これまたスピード完売となってしまったのです。1973年ヨーロッパ・ツアーの人気は本当に絶大。

その後も再リリースを望むマニアからの声は後を絶たず、遂に待望のサード・エディションのリリースが実現します。散見されたノイズに関してはセカンドのリリース時に突き詰めたところがありましたが、今回はさらなる取りこぼしを解消した最後の一撃。74年版ではライブ序盤の曲間を別項にて記したように「BRUSSELS AFFAIR」からの流用によって手直し。そして88年版では「Brown Sugar」で散見されたノイズを排除。ただしマニアに指摘されていた「Street Fighting Man」の冒頭0:03で入るノイズはPAからのものなので削除せず。これはザ・フー「LIVE AT LEEDS」などで有名なパチノイズの一種かと。
そして今回のような再登場を待ち望んだマニアは多いはず。いや、マニアでなくともこれは本当に聞いてもらいたい、稀代の名音源。「GET YER YA-YA’S OUT! COMPLETE EDITION」に負けじとこちらの音質も素晴らしく、これまたオフィシャルなライブアルバムに遜色ないレベルで安心して楽しめる極上音源。しかも二つの年代の放送を聞き比べるとミックスの仕上がりがまるで違うから面白い。演奏自体がそれぞれの放送で違うテイクではありますが、「Gimme Shelter」で聞き比べるとそれが解りやすいと思われます。フィル・ラモーンがミキシングを担当した74年版はお行儀のよい仕上がりで、二本のギターの迫力を中心としたストーンズらしい荒々しさを感じさせるのは88年版の方でしょう。
こうして聞かれる全体を通してのハイパーな演奏は本当に素晴らしい。現在開催中のストーンズ展でもこの時にミックが着ていたジャンプスーツが展示されていましたが、それを着たミックが躍動し、叫ぶのが1973年ヨーロッパ・ツアー。中でも「Midnight Rambler」は超絶名演かつ長い展開ですが、それでいてあっという間に聞き終えてしまう濃密さを兼ね備えている。それ故に88年版では短縮されてしまっているので、この曲に関しては74年版でじっくりと堪能していただきたいもの。あまりにも完成度が高く、69年から始まったミック・テイラー期ライブの頂点が克明に刻まれているのです。
そしてリリース時には74年放送版の曲順を実際のライブにそって直し、あるいは88年版放送で扱われなかった曲は74年版から流用し、こちらも実際のライブを再現する形に直しての収録が好評を博しました。キースのリズムギターのチューニングが怪しくなることで有名な「Gimme Shelter」を始めとした88年放送版のワイルドさ、それと比べて大人しいバランスに映るも、いくつもの名盤を生み出した気品ある放送であった74年版。そのどちらも最高の状態で収録した73年ヨーロッパ・ツアー、ラジオ音源最高の集大成。これまた一家に一枚、パート2！
