St. Louis, the first day of the tour that fans all over the world watched with a sigh of breath because it was the first stage after Charlie Watts died, has already been released in advance on the CD-R “ST. A clear recording state that conveys the details of the performance centering on Mick’s singing voice while maintaining a reasonable sense of distance. What made it easier to hear was the miraculous balance of not picking up the voices of the surrounding audience. Thanks to that, if it is a good sound source that you can thoroughly taste the state of the first stage of Stones that was held with Steve Jordan, the limited press CD release is natural.
Steve’s drumming is a concern, but of course it has a different nuance from Charlie. Still, the overwhelmingly positive voice is probably Steve’s show of drumming with complete respect for Charlie. From the opening “Street Fighting Man”, the rhythm reminiscent of the original studio version is fresh.
Of course, it is true that there are songs that make you feel uncomfortable, and the best example is “Start Me Up”. Only in this song, there is a big difference between Charlie’s bouncing drumming and Steve’s solid rhythm, and I think that Charlie’s drumming’s unique play is re-recognized.
However, overall, Steve’s drumming is just a well-integrated repertoire, and it seems that the majority of them are positively evaluated. Certainly his drumming is wonderful.
Since he’s more than 10 years older than Charlie, it’s easy to predict that his participation will increase the tightness and momentum of his repertoire, but when it comes to numbers in the 1960s, the sense of speed has increased dramatically. There is. As for this day, Steve’s participation would have allowed him to play two Brian songs in a row, “Under My Thumb” and “19th Nervous Breakdown.” The momentum and speed of the original version has been revived, and yet it makes you feel Charlie’s taste.
It is no exaggeration to say that Steve’s greatest achievement was “Paint It Black”. On the stage of 2019, which was the last tour for Stones when he was at Charlie, the song was so slow that it seemed to stop depending on the day. However, Steve’s drumming on that day was hitting as if to revive that aggressive atmosphere that was in the original version, and the song that I could not deny the feeling of lack of vividness for the past few years has been released at once. I came back to life. Is it clear that his play, such as this song and the previous two songs, goes well with the 1960s repertoire?
And on the stage in recent years, Charlie’s drums have influenced the development of the performance by inciting other members, and yet it is “Midnight Rambler”, but Steve’s play here still has a chemical reaction with other members. Not enough to wake up. Even so, it is a fact that there was a glimpse of the development that was sufficiently promising, and I do not feel that this will improve with each stage.
And this evening, “Wild Horses” was selected as “Vote Song”.

チャーリー・ワッツ亡き後、初めてのステージということで世界中のファンが固唾をのんで見守ったツアー初日であるセント・ルイスは既にCD-R「ST. LOUIS 2021」にて先行リリース済ですが、限定プレスCDでのリリースにも十分に足るクオリティであることから、今週バージョンアップが実現いたします。
程よい距離感を保ちつつ、ミックの歌声を中心に演奏のディティールもちゃんと伝えてくれるクリアーな録音状態。それに輪をかけて聞きやすくしてくれていたのが、周囲の観客の声をほとんど拾っていないという奇跡的なバランス。おかげでスティーブ・ジョーダンを迎えて行われたストーンズ最初のステージの様子をじっくり味わうことの出来る優良音源とくれば、やはり限定プレスCDリリースが当然。
気になるスティーブのドラミングですが、もちろんチャーリーと異なるニュアンスがあるのは当然のこと。それでも圧倒的に好意的な声が占めているのは、スティーブが完全にチャーリーをリスペクトしたドラミングを披露してくれたことでしょう。オープニングの「Street Fighting Man」からして、オリジナルのスタジオ・バージョンを彷彿させるリズムが新鮮。
もちろん違和感の拭えない曲があるのは事実で、その最たる例が「Start Me Up」。この曲だけは、あのチャーリーの跳ねたドラミングとスティーブのどっしりとしたリズムの違いが大きく、改めてチャーリーのドラミングの個性あふれたプレイを再認識させられる思いがします。
ところが全体的にはスティーブのドラミングが上手く溶け込んだレパートリーばかりであり、それが好意的な評価が大多数を占めるに至っているのでしょう。確かに彼のドラミングは素晴らしいものがある。
チャーリーより年齢が10歳以上も離れているということから、彼の参加によってタイトさや勢いが出るレパートリーが増えることは容易に予想できましたが、やはり60年代のナンバーになるとスピード感が俄然増している。この日に関して言えば、スティーブが参加したからこそ「Under My Thumb」と「19th Nervous Breakdown」というブライアン期の曲を二つも続けて演奏することができたのでしょう。正にオリジナル・バージョンの勢いやスピード感が蘇っており、それでいてちゃんとチャーリーのテイストを感じさせてくれるのがお見事。
それ以上にスティーブの最大の功績と呼んでも過言ではないほど息を吹き返したのが「Paint It Black」。チャーリー在籍時のストーンズにとってラスト・ツアーとなってしまった2019年のステージにおいて、この曲は日によって止まってしまいそうなほどテンポがもたついてしまっていたものでした。ところが、この日のスティーブのドラミングはオリジナル・バージョンにあった、あの攻撃的な雰囲気を蘇らすかのように叩いてくれており、ここ数年は精彩を欠いた感を否めなかった同曲が一気に息を吹き返したのです。この曲や先の二曲など、彼のプレイが60年代レパートリーと相性抜群であることは明確かと。
そして近年のステージにおいてチャーリーのドラムが他のメンバーを煽ることで演奏の展開を左右させ、なおかつ白熱させていた「Midnight Rambler」ですが、ここでのスティーブのプレイはまだ他のメンバーと化学反応を起こすまでには至らず。それでも十分に期待を抱かせる展開が垣間見られたのも事実であり、こちらはステージを重ねるごとに良くなる気がしてなりません。
そしてこの夜、「Vote Song」に選ばれたのは「Wild Horses」。
今なお新たな一歩を踏み出した彼らの歴史的な一日を捉えた音源が限定プレスへとバージョンアップ。単なる最新ツアーの初日ではなく、チャーリー亡き後のローリング・ストーンズ初めてのショーです。心して聞いてください！
