ミックの体調不良によるライブのキャンセルと言えば今からちょうど二年前のオーストラリアが挙げられますが、あの時はキャンセルの前後でミックの不調感が隠せないままでステージに向かっている感があったもの。無限の若さを手に入れたのではないか？と思えるほどのミックですら、喉に押せ寄せてきた年波にはかなわないのか…思わず二年前の出来事が蘇ってしまいました。
ところがどうでしょう、今回は本当に幸いなことにミックの立ち直りが早く、仕切り直しとなってしまった二日目のベガス・ショーは大成功に終わったのです。そうして世界中のファンが一喜一憂したストーンズ最新のライブ・ステージが先月の「DESERT TRIP」フェスティバルに続いて限定のプレスCDにて最速リリース！

「DESERT TRIP」フェスでは極上音質のオーディエンス録音がライブ終了後から登場し、中でも「WEEKEND 2」は2016年ストーンズの最優秀オーディエンス録音に輝いてもおかしくないほどの極上録音として、先週のリリースもあっという間にSold Outとなってしまいました。今回のベガス・ショーを記録したオーディエンス録音は数種類がネットに現れているのですが、正直言ってどれも「DESERT TRIP」音源の域には到達していません。しかし今回のリリースに当たっては一番の高音質を誇った「CL’s Master tape」音源を使用。「DESERT TRIP」音源ほどでないにせよ音像のオンな度合は申し分なく、何よりもショーが進むにつれてどんどんオンになっていくのです。
それ以上に素晴らしいのがクリアネス。先のフェスと違いアリーナですので、程よいバランスのエコーが合わさった聴き心地の良さは格別！しかも今回のリリースに当たっては、元の音源の音質をイコライズしてさらに聴きやすい状態へと昇格させています。全体的に中域に寄っていた録音バランスをアジャストし、元と比べると格段に見通しの良い音質に生まれ変わりました。既に元の音源を入手されている方も多いでしょうから、聞き比べていただければ、今回のイコライズによる、しかし不自然さのないアッパー感に驚かされることでしょう。

この日、何といっても注目されたのは病み上がりという状態でステージに上がったミック。先に触れた二年前のオーストラリア・ツアーにおいては復帰後のステージでの病み上がり感というか、年齢も合わさって復調しきれていない場面がみられたほど。ところがここでのミックはオープニングの「Jumping Jack Flash」からして完全復活を遂げた歌いっぷりに感動を覚えずにはいられません。それに続いて演奏された「Let’s Spend the Night Together」の演奏はミックだけでなく、バンド全体もいい感じ。昨年あたりまでの演奏と比べると少しゆったりとしたテンポなのですが、それがかえってオリジナルのスタジオ・バージョンを彷彿させてくれ、意外なほど新鮮に響くのです。
それどころかミックもバンドも絶好調で、ショー前半における抜群の安定感は「DESERT TRIP」フェスをも凌ぐほど。むしろ10月前半のショーをこなしたことで、ストーンズはエンジン全開となったのでしょう。そこでも聴けたニューアルバムからのブルース・カバー「Ride ‘Em on Down」の演奏はいよいよ素晴らしい。本当にアルバムのリリースが楽しみになってきましたね。円熟ストーンズによる最高のブルース…思わず聞き惚れてしまいそうです。
そして大事を取ってキース・コーナーを一曲増量したセットリストも非常に魅力的。その選曲も理想的なものでしょう。その甲斐もあってミックは最後まで調子を崩すことなく元気に歌い切っており、逆に不調の兆しが見え隠れしていた「WEEKEND 2」のショー終盤と比べても、彼の好調ぶりは明らか。唯一「Midnight Rambler」のエンディングに向かう場面でチャーリーがずれてしまいそうになる場面も余裕でクリアー。この頃になると音像も相当にオンでエクセレントな音質も聞き逃せません。ミックが見事に復活し、予想をはるかに上回る名演となったラスベガスでの最新ライブをじっくりとお楽しみください。やはりライブ活動が持続している時のストーンズはノリが違います！
