そんな中で放送用映像とは違う、いわば「THE BIGGEST BANG」の目玉的ライブ映像として収録されていたのが10月に行われたテキサスのオースティン公演。今回はその映像パートの音声を限定のプレスCDでリリースしてみせる訳ですが、今回同時リリースの2003年オランピアと聴き比べてみると、そのライブサウンドのスタイルが激変していることに気付かされるはず。つまり、ストーンズ従来の魅力であった二本のギターを中心としたサウンドへと見事に回帰していたということ。まずアルバム「A BIGGER BANG」自体がギターのサウンドを要とした仕上がりとなっていたのですが、ライブにおいてはそれがさらに推し進められていたのです。とはいえ、現在のストーンズと違ってサポート・メンバーの人数はそれまでと同じような大所帯で行われていたことから、当時はギターサウンドへの回帰感が見過ごされていたもの。
むしろツアーから10年以上の歳月が経過した今になって聴いてみたからこそ再認識できる事実かもしれません。こうした見過ごされている魅力をストーンズとしても改めてアピールしたかったのでしょうか、数年前に過去のライブ音源が配信リリースされた際にも、圧倒的にビンテージな年代のライブが占めた中、例外的に2005年のツアー本番前のトロント・ギグを収めた「LIGHT THE FUSE」がリリースされたことも、それを裏付けているように思えてなりません。つまり、「A BIGGER BANG」ツアーはギターサウンドのライブだったのだということを。
もうそれは今回のオランピアと聴き比べれば一目瞭然なのですが、やはりキースとロニーの存在感が強いストーンズのライブサウンドというのは格別。こうして映像無しのステレオ・サウンドボード録音で聴いてみると、なおさらではないでしょうか。しかしオースティン公演の魅力はそれだけにとどまりません。
マーティン・スコセッシによる映画「SHINE A LIGHT」の舞台となったビーコン・シアターでの収録ギグを目前に控え、ストーンズのコンディションはもはや盤石の域。オープニングから脂がのりきった演奏を聞かせてくれます。このツアーにおける目玉であった「Sway」まで、ギターがアンサンブルの要となる曲が立て続けに演奏され、ここでもギター回帰のライブサウンドを存分に味わせてくれる。
そうしたギターサウンドの放射から一息つくかの如く演奏された「Bob Wills Is Still the King」はテキサスの英雄たるカントリー・シンガーのウェイロン・ジェニングスを偲んで演奏された彼の曲のカバーというスペシャルなレパートリーが光ります。「Ain’t Too Proud To Beg」からは再びワイルドなギター中心のサウンドに戻りますが、ここで注目すべきは「Bitch」。これは映像本編ではカットされていた当日のレパートリーでしたが、実はエンディングで使われており、実質的に収録されていたのです。ただしエンディングで使うということから、歓声の抑えられたミックスで収録されており、そのままではライブ感が希薄。そこで今回のリリースに当たっては、同曲を実際のライブの位置に戻した上で、演奏の前後に歓声を付け加えて違和感なくフィットさせています。

残念ながらこの日はオーディエンスや流出サウンドボードといった別音源の類が存在せず、映像からカットされていた「You Can’t Always Get What You Want」は未収録となってしまいました。それが今回のリリースにおける唯一のマイナス・ポイントかと。しかしレギュラーなライブ・レパートリーではありますし、マニアからすると大したダメージとならないのも事実でしょう。
そして今回の二種類のサウンドボード・ライブのタイトルですが、どちらにおいてもキースが通常と違ったスペシャルなレパートリーを演奏している点が共通します。「Learning The Game」はキースが敬愛するバディ・ホリーのナンバー。それまでにもパティ・ハンセンとの新婚旅行中に録音された弾き語りテープでマニアにはおなじみだった曲。ところがここではキース節が全開かつストーンズらしいルーズなギター全開のロックへと見事な豹変を遂げており、その迫力たるや音源だけで聴いても十分すぎるほど。ギターサウンドが猛威を振るっていた「A BIGGER BANG」ツアーの魅力が再確認できる最高のライブ・アルバムがここに。やはりストーンズの魅力はギターだ！
