今回はキースのソロだけでなくストーンズのライブ音源に関しても、過去にCD-Rでリリースされていた音源の限定のプレスCD昇格版をリリースいたします。しかもターゲットになったのは2003年の横浜アリーナ。この時のジャパン・ツアーに関しては未だに色褪せることを知らない武道館公演に人気が集中してしまった感がありますが、ストーンズはシアター、アリーナ、そしてスタジアムの三会場を使い分けるという「LICKS」ツアーのコンセプトを日本でも実現させるべく、白羽の矢が立てられたのが横浜アリーナでした。
伝説の武道館と名演の誉れ高き東京ドーム初日の合間に挟まれ、2003年ジャパン・ツアー関東レグにおいては意外なほど印象が薄い3月12日の横浜アリーナ公演。未だにストーンズ唯一の横浜公演というだけでなく、関東エリアにおいて初めて東京以外の地域でストーンズが公演を行った点が非常に画期的だったのです。
さらにアリーナ・コンセプトを押し出したこの日の選曲がまた画期的。ショーの序盤にて「If You Can’t Rock Me」が炸裂。「LICKS」ツアーにおいては同曲が1976年以来となるライブ・レパートリーへの復活を果たしたことが大きな目玉の一つだったのですが、このレア・レパートリーが日本で披露されたのは後にも先にもこの時だけ。おまけにこの時の演奏が素晴らしい。1975年や76年のワイルドなライブ・バージョンと違ってスタジオ・バージョンに忠実な演奏がむしろ新鮮でした。間奏ではダリル・ジョーンズのベース・ソロがフィーチャーされるのも迫力満点。今思えば「If You Can’t Rock Me」が披露された時点で横浜アリーナが素晴らしい一夜となることが確約されたようなもの。
むしろもっと演奏してほしいほどの出来栄えを示していたほどなのですが、「LICKS」ツアーにおいてこの曲は当初からシアター、あるいはアリーナ向けレパートリーという位置づけだったようで、思いのほか演奏回数は多くありませんでした。そのせいで日本でも横浜のみの披露となったのです。

この日を代表するもう一つのレア・ナンバーが「Loving Cup」。「LICKS」ツアーの良いところは、新しいスタジオ・アルバムのプロモーションの為にツアーを行うのではなく、ベスト盤のリリースに合わせてツアーを行ったことから過去のナンバーからの幅広いレパートリー導入を可能としたところでしょう。それに加えて1989年から始まったサポートメンバー導入バンド構成でのライブにおいても、それまで以上に従来のストーンズらしさを取り戻していていたツアーでした。
そうしたツアーだからこそ、この曲もまた1972年ツアーで数回試して以来のレパートリー復帰を果たすことが出来たのです。それどころか72年以上に積極的な「Loving Cup」のライブ演奏が繰り返されたという点も「LICKS」ツアー密かに画期的な出来事だったのでは。そしてジャパン・ツアーにおいてはここ横浜での披露が実現。その場におられた方であれば誰もが焼き付いていることだと思われますが、ミックの気合が入りまくった熱唱が本当に素晴らしかった。
極めつけはこの曲を皮切りに「All Down The Line」と「Tumbling Dice」、とどめにキース・コーナーでも「Happy」が取り上げられたおかげで、ストーンズ日本公演史上においてもっとも「メインストリートのならず者」色の濃い一夜となった点は今をもって語り継がれるべきでしょう。

そうした素晴らしい一夜でありながら、それでいて前後の二公演ほど強い印象を与えない理由、それは2003年当時に極上クオリティのオーディエンス録音がなかなかリリースされなかったことが大きいのではないでしょうか。そもそもがストーンズ側にとっても初めて（そして今のところ最初で最後の）の会場であったこともあり、当日の現場で鳴っていた音も低音が強かったように思えたものです。実際にリリースされたアイテムも低音がドコドコと響いてしまった状態のものが多く、そこへ加えて2003年当時に当時過熱していたイコライズ・ウォーズの風潮が反映された所謂「ドンシャリ」的な仕上がりの横浜アリーナ・アイテムが非常に多かった。さらにはテーパー自体も良いポジションを確保できなかったのでしょう。
こういった状況の中で2003年当時にCD-Rでリリースされていたのが「YOKOHAMA 20 LICKS」。あの時はこれから高音質アイテムがプレスCDで乱立することを予想し、あくまで即効性を売りとしてCD-Rでリリースしていたもの。ところが、それから15年近い歳月が経過したところでギフト・リリースとして復活させてみたところ、その意外なほどのクオリティの高さから「むしろ今こそプレスで出すべきでは？」という声が多く寄せられてしまいました。何しろクリアネスやオンな音像、そして全体のナチュラルな質感などは過去にリリースされた横浜アイテムのどれよりも優れていたのです。
よって今回のプレスCDへの昇格決定は先のギフト・リリースがきっかけとなったと言って良いでしょう。非常にスッキリとした音質と音像の魅力は今なお色褪せておらず、これぞ見過ごされた名音源と呼ぶに相応しいもの。さすがは2014年来日公演の名作「オレンジ・スリー」を録音してくれたテーパーだけのことはある。
当日は会場の別スピーカーから音を鳴らしていたBステージの三曲だけは、あの状況を反映してくぐもった音質へとなってしまいます。しかし当日アリーナに居られた方であれば、この音質の変化や周囲の騒がしさこそがあの日のリアルなドキュメントと呼べるものではないかと。増してや本録音はライブ本編で周囲の音をまったく拾っておらず、極度にストレスのない状況で聞き込めるからこそ、あの狂乱のBステージのリアルさまでも伝えてくれるのです。2003年ジャパン・ツアーの隠れた名演と呼ぶに相応しい横浜アリーナ、あの一夜を抜群のクリアネスでじっくりとお楽しみください！

日本初の北米スタイルのアリーナ公演ということでファンの注目を集めた2003年3月12日の横浜アリーナ公演を、ステージ向かって右側スタンド席から良質なオーディエンスショット映像で収録。素晴らしい音質で収録されたCDも良いですが、やはり目で観るストーンズのライヴ映像は別格。前列の観客のシルエットが邪魔になる部分もあったりますが、とにかく的確なズーム処理を駆使したカメラワークが素晴らしく、誰しもがその魅力的な場面に見入ってしまうことでしょう。特に後半のBステージは特に近目に撮影されており、その魅力的な演奏とアングルにより終始見応え満点。2003年LICKSツアーの一つのピークポイントのひとつであった横浜アリーナのBステージを素晴らしい映像で堪能することができます。ツアー中、演奏時間が最も短く、Can’t Hear Me Knockingが外れているのは残念でしたが（Midnight Ramblerもなし）、アリーナでスト―ンズが見れるという滅多にない体験を実現させてくれたこの日のライヴは、独特のものがあります。この日は一曲目はStreet Fighting Man。It’s Only Rock’n Rollを挟んでプレイされたIf You Can’t Rock MeとDon’t Stopは日本初演奏。Steel Wheelsツアーではほぼ毎日演奏していた Ruby Tuesdayは、2003年日本ツアーではこの日が唯一の演奏で、キースがエレアコを弾いてるアレンジです。ツアー屈指の名録音盤である今回の「YOKOHAMA 2003」を優れた映像で補完してくれる最高のボーナスDVD。15年前の熱い夜を是非、本盤で追体験下さい。
