当時は新曲を含んでいつつも、結成40周年が結局はベスト・アルバムのリリースに留まったことが意外に映ったのも事実でした。その前にリリースされたスタジオ・アルバム「BRIDGES TO BABYLON」が今でこそ傑作との評価を得られたものの、当時は評価とセールスの両方が芳しくない結果に終わり、それに輪をかけてアメリカでライブを行うと新曲の反応が鈍いというジレンマに直面。それがミックにとっては由々しき事態となってしまっていたようです。キースと喧々諤々やり合って作ったアルバムがあの程度しか売れない上、オーディエンスに受けないのであれば…そのせいで2002年は開き直ったかのごとく新曲入りベスト「FORTY LICKS」が登場したのでした。

しかしメリットもありました。アルバム一枚分のレコーディングを必要としないことから、この時のレコーディングはパリでたった一カ月間セッティングされただけだったのです。それでもスタジオに入ってしまえば創作意欲が煮えたぎるのがミックやキースの性分。わずか一か月でもかなりの曲が産み出されていたのです。実際にキースが「FORTY LICKS」リリース時に「今回はベスト盤だが、既にアルバム一枚作れるようなアイディアが俺とミックの中にある」と力説していたくらいでした。それを証明してくれたのが今回リリースとなる衝撃の音源。
50分にも満たない、それこそレギュラーなスタジオ・アルバム一枚程度のセッション音源ですが、これがびっくりするくらい楽しめる。ストーンズのセッション音源、特に70年代以降は「興味深いが聞きづらい」、「お蔵入りして当然の音源」あるいは「マスターテイクを磨き上げていくグリマー・ツインズのプロデュース能力」を確かめさせてくれる資料としての側面が強い。ところが今回の音源はどのテイクも完成度が高めであり、聞き疲れする演奏がまったくないのです。
そうした中でも最大の驚きはキース最新のソロアルバムで日の目をみた「Trouble」の草稿がストーンズのセッションにおいて「Just Because」という仮題で演奏されていたことかと。「Trouble」はキースのソロとしての録音ながら、楽曲自体がいかにも彼らしいセンス全開でしたので、こうしてストーンズとして演奏されていても何ら違和感がないし、それをミックが歌ってくれているというのも鳥肌が立つ思いです。キースが「TALK IS CHEAP」のセッションで「Almost Hear You Sigh」を試していたところ、後に「STEEL WHEELS」でストーンズの楽曲として完成させられましたが、これはその逆パターン。

一方2005年の「A BIGGER BANG」で「Lough, I Nearly Died」としてリリースされた曲の草稿であるのが「Cried Out」。既に楽曲がかなり完成しており、後に「Lough, I～」へと生まれ変わった際は、いかにもミックが追い求めそうな今っぽい音作りでまとめ上げられていたのに対し、こちらはストーンズ本領発揮のR&Bバラード調です。こちらの方が好ましく映るようにも思えるのですが。
他の未発表曲はどれもミック主体で作られたと推測される雰囲気を持つもの。この手の草稿やアウトテイクは「SOME GIRLS」から「UNDERCOVER」までの間、それこそ掃いて捨てるほど存在している訳ですが、それらにありがちなボーカルのオフ気味な状態が見られないのが今回の音源の大きな魅力。どの曲でもミックの声がオンなバランスであり、実に聞き応えがある。確かにキースが言っていた通り、いくつもの新曲のアイディアを試していたことを証明してくれます。
さらに今回の音源が貴重なのは、曲間の会話が「セッションの空気感」まで伝えてくれるということ。「SOME GIRLS」から「UNDERCOVER」までのセッション音源は意外とこうしたテイクの合間のやりとりが入っていないのです。逆に「VOODOO LOUNGE」のセッション音源ではそうした場面が聞かれましたが、今度は量が膨大すぎ（笑）。その点においても今回の音源の聞きやすさは際立っている。とどめに音質がまるでオフィシャル・レベルの極上音質なのだから文句の付けようがない。
そして「FORTY LICKS」に収録された二曲に関しては完成直前のラフミックスといった趣なのですが、これらがまた聞き逃せません。まず「Don’t Stop」は歌の始まりと同時に手拍子が入ってくる上に、エンディングに向かうところでのミックのアドリブがまったく違い、しかもそれがフェイドアウトまで続くというもの。その点「Keys To Your Love」はさらに完成直前といった状態でありながら、展開部で何とキースの優しいハモりが入ってくるという。これはそのまま残してもらいたかった。
これだけの充実した内容と音質を誇る衝撃の音源ではありますが、さらにボーナスとして「FOUR FLICKS」DVDに使われていた本セッションから二曲のジャム調ナンバーも収録してさらに内容を充実させています。何かとルーズな面ばかりが目立ってしまうストーンズのセッション音源としては珍しく敷居の低い内容であり、思わず何度も聞き返したくなるような衝撃の新音源、じっくりとお楽しみください。
