2013年の5月にリリースされるやいなや瞬時に完売したあの幻の名盤『ROGER WATERS with ERIC CLAPTON – THE GUNNER’S DREAM』が今週末、遂に新装版として限定復活します!!ロジャー・ウォーターズがソロとして初めて実施した1984年” ヒッチハイクの賛否両論 “のツアーと言えば、アルバムの全面参加だけでなくツアーにも帯同したエリック・クラプトンとの共演や、去年約40年振りにキング・クリムゾンに戻ったメル・コリンズが参加した事で当時大きな話題となりました。同ツアーからは幾つものオーディエンス録音(※以降、AUD)が登場してファンとマニアを愉しませてくれた訳ですが、その中で7月26日の米国シカゴ公演が2013年のある日、それまで存在すら知られていなかったステレオ・サウンドボード(※以降、SBD)音源として突如ネット上に登場し、世界中の熱心なファンを騒然とさせた事がありました。これはかのWolfgang’s Vaultによって公開されたもので、間違いなく何らかの関係者・スタッフから流出したであろうリアルステレオのSBD音源となっており、AUD録音ばかりで占められていた他のヒッチハイク音源とは一線を画す圧倒的なクオリティを誇るものでした。当Sigmaも当時これを急遽プレスCD化し、同年5月に限定ナンバリングステッカー付きで世界初リリースを実現させたのですが(※Sigma 93 / 『ROGER WATERS with ERIC CLAPTON – THE GUNNER’S DREAM』)、ここ最近のツェッペリンやポール・マッカートニー来日公演タイトル同様に瞬時完売してしまい、以降現在までその状態が続いておりました。当時入手を逃された御客様からはお叱りの声や再プレス希望の声が絶えず、実は2年が過ぎた現在でもまだ時折り「再プレスの予定はありますか?」とお問い合わせを戴く程だったのです。

そんな先月、偶然にも2年前のリリース時に海外用に予備として一定数を運び出していた海外業者から「倉庫に僅かながら予備の在庫があるが、どうするのか」と連絡が入った事で海外に在庫が若干残っていた事が判明し、逆輸入する形で10枚が当店に戻って来たのです(※これが先週火曜日の新作情報アップデート時に登場した、奇跡の10枚入荷分だった訳です。実際には11枚戻ってきたのですが、うち1枚はケース割れとジャケのダメージが大きく、御提供出来ない状態でした)。この返送品を受け取ったSigmaのスタッフが、ジャケとケースが破損した廃棄扱いの1枚を久し振りに掛けたところから今回の新装版リリースに向けた動きが始まりました。そして同時に、何故お客様から2年間も再プレスのお問い合わせがあり続けたのかも深く理解した次第です。何故なら2年振りに耳にしたその2013年版の収録音の” 仕上がり “は、現在聴いても特級クラスの超高音質を誇っていたからです。

というのは、本盤は確かに前述した通り当時Wolfgang’s Vaultによって公開されたものをマスター使用しているのですが、Sigmaが当時リリースした2013年版の『THE GUNNER’S DREAM』はそのWolfgang’s Vault版をそのまま落としたものではなかったからです。このWolfgang’s Vault版のSBD原音は基本的には秀逸な音質ながらも全体がやや中音域に寄った音で収録されており、若干の調整が必要でした。そこで当時、当Sigmaレーベルのエンジニアが独自のプロ級マスタリングを施してボーカルの前面への押し出しや各楽器の分離を格段に向上させる事に成功し、明瞭感に欠けていたタムとスネアの音に鋭いメリハリを蘇らせた事であのバランスの良い、ミラクルな音像が実現していたのです。言い換えればあの2013年版は、当時ネット公開されたWolfgang’s Vault音源よりも更に音が磨かれた、Sigmaレーベル独自のプロ級マスタリングという大きなアドヴァンテージが付いたブラッシュアップ最高音質盤だった訳で、収録内容は同一ながらも音質のクオリティはSigma版の方が遥かに高い” 仕上がり “を誇っていたのです。とはいえ、出し直すならリマスター版としての再リリースとしたかったので実際にリマスタリングを何度か試みたのですが、どうやっても不要なイコライズ感が出てしまい、改良の余地が全く見付けられなかったのです。如何にあの2013年版の出来が良かったか、あの段階であまりに完璧な音像で” 仕上げて “しまったかを逆に思い知らされる始末でした。なので今回は、この2年間ずっと再プレスを望むラブコールを戴いていた方々への特別企画と考え、2013年版と同タイトル・収録内容も同一ながら、新たにデザインされた新ジャケでSigma番号131を与えての再発盤と致しました。ですから、既に旧盤をお持ちの方はジャケ以外は同じですので、Sigma盤のフルコンプをされていらっしゃる方(※意外と多いのです)以外は基本的に無視して下さって構いません。しかしそれだけに音質には絶対の自信がありますし、比類なきハイクオリティを保証致します!!

何しろオープニングの「太陽讃歌」からして驚異的で、冒頭の20秒を聴けば尋常ならざるその極上音質に唖然となるに違いありません。原曲には無いフレーズと女性コーラスのパートが設けられた導入部ではロジャーの歌声が異常なほどの至近距離から現れ、メル・コリンズ奏でるサックスも音像のブレや曇りが微塵も無い” 立った音色 “で出ているのです。中盤から入るクラプトンのギターに至っては彼らしい優美な旋律が至近距離から次々と飛び出す驚きで充ちており、五臓六腑に染み渡るその響きに思わず唸ってしまうでしょう。「Money」はロジャーの鮮明な歌声と女性コーラスが刺激的に重なってゆくブレンド感が非常に良く出ています。サックスもISLAND期のクリムゾンを彷彿させるテイストでこの曲に新しい息吹きを与えており、その音色の艶やかさと伸び具合にゾクゾクされると思います。「If」はクラプトンのギターがグッと胸に刺さる名シーンです。この曲中で聴けるアコギによる情感豊かなパフォーマンスは一音一音が驚嘆に値するものとなっており、実際後半のギターソロでは(※他の曲中では程好い程度しか拾っていないのに)オーディエンスの大歓声をマイクが大きく拾っているほどです。これはファンならずとも必聴シーンでしょう。「Welcome To The Machine」はSEの効果音が左右から去来してステレオSBDらしさが特に良く現れている一曲です。音と音の間に濃密な透明度が感じられる音像の中、創造性の高い演奏が聴く側の想像力を鋭く挑発してくる悦びを是非御堪能戴きたいと思います。「Have A Cigar」は原曲の可能性を広げたアレンジが魅力的で、至近距離から出てくる熱の篭ったロジャーの歌唱が音楽を高め、中盤でサックスがリードを取ってゆく箇所ではその後ろで激しく動くベースとカッティングするギターが真新しいスリリングさを呼び覚ましてくれるでしょう。「Wish You Were Here」は冒頭で入ってくるピアノのイントロ(※及び曲中にも)に、僅かながらフロイドの曲「Paranoid Eyes」の導入部を彷彿させるフレーズが付けられており、大変興味深いものとなっています。またここは中盤でローランド製のギター・シンセサイザーを使用したクラプトンのソロがあり、その迸る旋律の流れが風格のある響きとなって耳を潤してくれるでしょう。「In The Flesh」では曲が始まる前にロジャーが”…Silence!! “と叫んであの世界の主人公に変貌し、” これこそが私が指揮を執るTHE WALLの音だ! “と言わんばかりの凄まじいアンサンブルが手応えのある音触で炸裂します。またここは彼のベースにも注目で、フロイド時代にはやらなかったトレモロピッキングをしているシーンがあるのも特徴です。「Nobody Home」もそんなロジャー特有の音世界が麗しいサウンドで現れ、これにクラプトンのギターが極上の音色で流れる事で、音が囚われた何かから開放されてゆく特別な感動を味わえるでしょう。一方このクラプトンのギターシーンと対を為す様に「Hey You」ではメルがサックスで長めのリードを取っているのが確認出来ますが、3つ連続するTHE WALLの各曲で、バンドの主要メンバーにそれぞれ大きな見せ場を作っている構成の面白さもこの豪華布陣ならではでしょう。「The Gunner’s Dream」では曲後半でクラプトン特有の機知に富んだフレーズが次々と至近距離で舞い上がる素晴らしいシーンが出てきます。その官能的な旋律が曇りの無い完璧なステレオSBDで耳に届けられる時、実現する事の無かったTHE FINAL CUTツアーの幻をきっと脳裏で御覧になる筈です。

ディスク2はヒッチハイク全曲再現を含むショウ後半です。こちらも「4:30 AM」からステレオ感満点のSBDサウンドとなっており、ロジャーの肉声の近さやSEの鮮烈な音色が序盤から色彩豊かに現れます。本格的なアンサンブルが展開してゆく「4:33 AM」からも各楽器の出音の良さが際立ち、特徴的なクラプトンのギターもその動きをパーフェクトに追ってゆけるのが嬉しいところでしょう。バックスクリーンで映し出されているオートバイの走り去る音や警報音が鮮明に出ている事も特筆されます。「4:39 AM」の中盤で入るサックスは艶のある女性コーラスと絡みながら魅惑のサウンドを構築しており、これが「4:41 AM」でギターとピアノとロジャーの歌唱に引き継がれてゆく様子も各音色が鮮明に出ている事で音像に立体感があり、表現の幅広さをより確かな手応えで感じる事が出来るでしょう。またこの曲では途中から出てくる熱っぽいギターの旋律が鮮明な音で花開いており、クラプトンによって曲が劇的に色付けされてゆくマジカルな興奮もお楽しみ戴けると思います。「4:50 AM」は曲想がドラマチックに展開する中盤でロジャーの熱唱が際立ち、ギターからサックスへ繋がれてゆく旋律の歌い上げ(※3分43秒付近~4分46秒付近)も信じ難いほどに高い音楽的興奮が記録されています。同様に「4:56 AM」ではロジャーの歌唱、女性コーラス、そしてサックスという3つの音が天上の響きで綴れ合う様子が至高の透明サウンドで通り過ぎるのですが、ここでの静謐な音像も豊かな行間の魅力を広々と感じさせるかの様で大変魅力的です。「5:01 AM」では中盤に入るギターソロが素晴らしい出音の近さでクラプトンとレンウィックの動きを伝え、終盤に向かう流れの中で次々と音が花開き、それぞれの楽器が次第に集って大きなアンサンブルになってゆく様子が驚きのステレオ・サウンドで出てきます。最終節となる「5:06 AM」と「5:11 AM」でもフックの効いた熱い旋律を粛々と歌い上げるクラプトンのギターがロジャーの歌唱に終始華を添え、質の高い聴き応えを
場に残しながら音楽が夢から醒めてゆく様子に打ち震えるでしょう。アンコールの「Brain Damage」と「Eclipse」は原曲に近い音作りで、SEも完璧に捉えた魅惑のサウンドです。変化に富んだロジャー歌唱版としての表現や、要所要所でクラプトンがギルモアのそれとは違う響きとアプローチで曲に新たな息吹きと彩りを与えている様子が特上の音質でお愉しみ戴けます。ステレオSBDという基本ポテンシャルの高さゆえ各楽器の音のブレンド感も音が消え入る最後の一音まで最高値で出ていますから、聴き終えた後の熱い余韻と感動も格別です。それはまさに、当時残されなかった公式ライブ盤を聴き終えた確かな手応えと充実感そのものと言えるでしょう。
