Not only the vocals of the rod but also the performance of the band is captured with a wonderful sound image. At this level, even if you are not a maniac, you can fully enjoy it. Above all, it’s an ultra-recording that brilliantly cleared the humiliation of 1977.

The 1982 tour, which brought up the masterpiece “TONIGHT I’M YOURS”, which was a huge hit due to its successful approach to the rod-style eighties sound, produced a by-product of the live album “ABSOLUTELY LIVE”. The day when the recording for the same album was done. When Rod himself finished singing “Sweet Little Rock and Roller,” he said, “I’m recording for a live album.”
The long beach audience, who was already excited, was very excited about this news. This is where the true value of mirrored recording comes into play. Yes, while the sound image of the performance is outstandingly on-balanced, it still captures the “air of the place” and “excitement” unique to live performances in an exquisite balance that does not cause stress. マイク・ミラードによるロッド・スチュワートの録音と言うとUXBRIDGEからCD-Rにてリリースされた「L.A. FORUM 1977: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES」が記憶に新しいところですが、せっかくの極上音質だったにもかかわらず、いかんせんショーの途中からの録音という点が惜しまれました。これがコンプリだったら間違いなくプレスCDリリースだったのに…というレベルでした。
その点、今回のミラードによる新たなロッド音源はしっかりコンプリート。それ以上に音質が素晴らしい。ロングビーチ・アリーナというLAフォーラムと並んでミラードにとって勝手知ったる他人の家レベルの会場です、いかにも彼らしい「奇跡がデフォ」クオリティが炸裂。ロッドのボーカルはもとよりバンドの演奏も見事な音像で捉えてくれている。このレベルならマニアでなくとも存分に堪能できるレベルかと。何より77年の雪辱を見事に晴らしてくれたウルトラ・レコーディングなのです。

ロッド流エイティーズ・サウンドへのアプローチが功を奏して大ヒットを記録した名盤「TONIGHT I’M YOURS」を引っ提げた1982年ツアーはライブアルバム「ABSOLUTELY LIVE」という副産物を生み出しましたが、この日も同アルバム用の収録が行われた日。ロッド自身も「Sweet Little Rock and Roller」を歌い終えたところで「ライブアルバム用にレコーディングしてるからね」と語りかけています。
ただでさえ盛り上がっていたロングビーチのオーディエンスはこの知らせに対して大興奮。ここでミラード録音の真価が発揮されます。そう、演奏の音像が抜群にオンなバランスでありながら、それでいてライブならでは「場の空気」と「盛り上がり」をストレスにならない絶妙のバランスで捉えてくれている。これぞミラード録音でしか味わえない醍醐味というもの。それがスターダムの絶頂期にあったロッドのライブの熱狂や興奮もあますことなく伝えてくれるという。

それと同時に、今回ショーすべてを捉えた音源が登場したことによって「ABSOLUTELY LIVE」では少なくとも「Hot Legs」、「You’re In My Heart」、「Young Turks」そして「Maggie May」がロングビーチから採用されていたことが判明しました。おまけに「Hot Legs」はバンドメンバーが短いソロ回しを展開させていた間奏が短く編集され、「Maggie May」は途中でロッドの声が疲れをみせていたことから差し替え、あるいは別公演との編集という形で収録されていたことも判明したのです。こうした驚きの新事実を明らかにしてくれたのも全長版ならでは。
さらに「ABSOLUTELY LIVE」は10年前にExpanded Editionがリリースされたものの、途中でクラプトンの「Layla」にメドレーするこの時期ならではの「(I Know) I’m Losing You」の収録は同曲の楽曲使用料が発生することから叶いませんでした。つまりオフィシャルでは複数の公演からまとめられたというだけでなく、そのせいでどうしてもセットリストを完全再現できない事情があった。この点においても今回のリリースの価値たるや計り知れないものがある。
その上、先のようなオフィシャルのライブアルバムにありがちな編集や手直しが加えられたということまで今回の音源が暴いてくれたのだから、やはりオーディエンス録音がドキュメントとしても重要であることを再認識させられる思いです。それでいて音質や臨場感が絶妙のバランス。そうなると「Tonight I’m Yours (Don’t Hurt Me)」の序盤で一瞬だけ音がモノラルになるトラブルも微塵な問題でしかない。これはもうマニアだけでもなく一般のリスナーにも体験していただきたい最高のオーディエンス・アルバム。これぞ真実の「ABSOLUTELY LIVE」！
