”The phantom video was recorded in London, December 23, 1974. Yes, multi-camera pro shot “Last Concert” at Kilburn. This show has long been known as a video symbolizing the late THE FACES since it was broadcasted on TV, and it is a large classic that has given birth many times (it is not the final performance of THE FACES, contrary to the title). In our store, the highest broadcast version “KILBURN 1974” has become very popular. However, unlike the broadcast, this work is the official work version released in 1995. Some of you may remember the illustrations and jackets drawn by Japanese artists and the bright red belt with the words “A long-awaited historical video. This release is news !!” This work was precisely digitized from the Japanese disk “COLY-3166”.

[Laser disc version that is completely different from the broadcast version] Many people have already experienced “KILBURN 1974”, but the biggest difference is the length. “KILBURN 1974” was an edit that stuffed five songs along a 20-minute broadcast frame, but this work is about 65 minutes. Not only is “You Wear It Well”, which has stopped showing a part of the face, fully recorded, but the number that could not be seen in the broadcast version has also been increased by 8 songs. There is no comparison at all. Let’s organize the contents here.

… and it looks like this. In “KILBURN 1974”, Keith, who was only “Sweet Little Rock’n Roller”, performed two more songs with “I ’d Rather Go Blind” and “Twistin ‘The Night Away”. In addition, you can enjoy precious numbers such as “It’s All Over Now” and “You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything” that you can’t listen to even in the late THE FACES symbolic sound board “DEFINITIVE SAN BERNARDINO 1975 (Wardour-374)” released the other day.
Not only such a large volume up, but also the screen quality is completely different from “KILBURN 1974”. The image quality is like a very vintage film. To be honest, white and black dot noise is included, and the details are analog. It is a completely different world from the super vivid feeling of “KILBURN 1974” that would have been digitally processing the station master. But that’s not bad. Daimoto is an official work, and it was awakened from a Japanese version of a mint laser disc. Of course, tape twist and dubbing marks are physically impossible, and the product quality at that time is reproduced without deterioration. The monaural sound is also the original. In addition, the film feel has exquisite taste in the band’s music, making it feel great as a recorded video. Although it is impossible to hope for the official DVD or BD with this quality, it will tickle the psychology of classic rock fans.

Moreover, this co-star was a very delicate timing. “December 23, 1974” is the initial stage of Stones’ production of “BLACK & BLUE”. More precisely, it is between the Munich session in December 1974 and the Rotterdam session in January-February 1975. In other words, it was the “Great Guitarist Hunt” period when I was looking for a replacement for Mick Taylor while recording. In order to grasp the situation, let’s take a bird’s-eye view of the time series at that time with the main press CD.

This is Stones and THE FACES 1974/1975. “Great Guitarist Hunt” was the Rotterdam session from January to February 1975. This work was right after Mick Taylor left, and it was the time when the search for a successor was about to start. Keith and Ron are old friends, and when Taylor told Mick Jagger about his intention to leave, he joined Ron who was with him. Keith’s heart is not certain, but he may have seen Ron as a “future partner”. And the stage where Ian McCregan strikes the piano behind Keith & Ron is like Stones. However, holding the microphone there is … the golden shining rod stewart !!

The FACES late-stage symbolic pro shot that also realized a co-star with Keith. It is a phantom official work that can enjoy the historic stage on a scale of about 65 minutes that far exceeds the broadcast. その幻映像が記録されたのは「1974年12月23日ロンドン」。そう、キルバーン公演のマルチカメラ・プロショット『ラスト・コンサート』です。このショウはテレビ放送されたことからも古くから後期THE FACESを象徴する映像として知られ、幾多の既発を生んできた定番中の大定番（タイトルに反してTHE FACESの最終公演ではありません）。当店でも、放送版の最高峰版『KILBURN 1974』が大好評となってきました。しかし、本作は放送とは異なり、1995年にリリースされたオフィシャル作品版。日本人アーティストが描いたイラスト・ジャケットや「待望の歴史的映像　このリリースはニュースです!!」の言葉が踊る真っ赤な帯をご記憶の方もいらっしゃるのではないでしょうか。本作は、その日本盤レーザーディスク『COLY-3166』から精緻にデジタル化されたものなのです。

【放送版とはまるで違うレーザーディスク版】
すでに『KILBURN 1974』をご体験の方も多いと思いますが、最大の違いは長さ。『KILBURN 1974』は約20分の放送枠に沿って５曲を詰め込む編集でしたが、本作はたっぷり約65分。部分的な顔見せ止まりだった「You Wear It Well」もちゃんとフル収録しているだけでなく、放送版では観られなかったナンバーも８曲増量。まったく比較にならないのです。ここで、その内容を整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『KILBURN 1974』では「Sweet Little Rock’n Roller」だけだったキースとの共演も「I’d Rather Go Blind」「Twistin’ The Night Away」と２曲増量。さらに先日リリースされた後期THE FACESの象徴サウンドボード『DEFINITIVE SAN BERNARDINO 1975（Wardour-374）』でも聴けない「It’s All Over Now」「You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything」といった貴重ナンバーも楽しめます。
そんな大ボリュームアップだけでなく、画面クオリティも『KILBURN 1974』とはまったく異なる。その画質は非常にヴィンテージなフィルム感覚なのです。正直に言いますと、白や黒のドット・ノイズも入り、ディテールもアナログ感覚。局マスターをデジタル加工していたであろう『KILBURN 1974』の超ビビッド感とはまったく別世界なのです。しかし、それが悪いわけではない。大元がオフィシャル作品ですし、しかもミント状態の日本版レーザーディスクから起こされたもの。もちろんテープヨレやダビング痕は物理的にあり得ず、当時の商品クオリティが劣化もなく再現。モノラル音声もオリジナルそのままです。しかも、フィルム感がバンドの音楽に絶妙な味わいを醸しており、記録映像としての格調まで感じさせる。このクオリティでオフィシャルでのDVD化もBD化も望むべくもないわけですが、すれっからしのクラシックロック・ファンの心理を絶妙にくすぐってくれるのです。

【ギタリスト・ハントの中で実現した歴史的な豪華共演】
そして、この映像で外せないのはキースとの共演。ロン・ウッドとのツイン・ギターが見られるのです。しかも、この共演は実に微妙なタイミングだった。この日「1974年12月23日」は、ストーンズの『BLACK & BLUE』制作の初期段階にあたる。もっと細かく言えば、1974年12月のミュンヘン・セッションと1975年１月-２月のロッテルダムセッションの合間。つまり、レコーディングしながらミック・テイラーの後任を探していた“グレイト・ギタリスト・ハント”時期だったわけです。その状況を把握するためにも、本編プレスCDも交えて当時の時系列を俯瞰してみましょう。

これがストーンズとTHE FACESの1974年／1975年。“グレイト・ギタリスト・ハント”は、1975年１月-２月のロッテルダム・セッションでのこと。本作はミック・テイラー脱退直後であり、これから後任探しが始まろうとしていたタイミングでした。キースとロンとは旧知の仲ですし、テイラーがミック・ジャガーに脱退の意志を伝えたときも一緒にいたロンに加入を持ちかけた。キースの心中は定かではありませんが、“将来の相棒”としてロンを見ていたのかも知れません。そして、そのキース＆ロンが並び立つ背後でイアン・マクレガンがピアノを叩きまくるステージは、まるでストーンズそのもの。しかし、そこでマイクを握るのは……黄金輝くロッド・スチュワート!!　歴史的なタイミングだからこそ実現した豪華共演を３曲も楽しめるのです。

キースとの共演も実現したTHE FACES後期の象徴プロショット。その歴史的なステージを、放送を遙かに超える約65分のスケールで楽しめる幻のオフィシャル作品です。今後の公式化は望めない映像を日本版レーザーディスクから復刻した１枚。どうぞ、永久保存プレスDVDでじっくりとご堪能ください。
