Robin Trower in 1973 ran up the stairs of success as a solo debut. Introducing the finest soundboard album that conveys that precious studio live.
It was “August 13, 1973 Sea West Studio” that was recorded in this work. This is an FM soundboard recording broadcast on Seattle’s local station “KOL”. In 1973, we have a lineup of masterpieces at our shop only during the popular season. The soundboard albums “SAUSALITO 1973 (Uxbridge 1418)” and “ATLANTA 1973: PRE-BROADCAST MASTER REEL (Uxbridge 1020)” have been very well received, including the classic pro shot “BATACLAN 1973”. In order to explain the positional relationship with such masterpieces, let’s first look back on the schedule at that time.

This is Robin Trower in his solo debut era. The radio appearance of this work was in the middle of “North America # 1”, but the above “SAUSALITO 1973” and “ATLANTA 1973” were also the same “North America # 1”. Let’s zoom in more detail.

This is all 21 performances of “North America # 1”. This Seattle broadcast wasn’t as famous as “SAUSALITO 1973”, probably because of a local station, but it was also a studio live on the radio. Moreover, it is the latest sister recording two days later. And this work is the highest peak of such a studio live. The master was announced by the prestigious “JEMS”, but the late Mr. Stan Gutsky, one of the founding staff of “JEMS”, recorded it in the first place. He himself was a famous taper who made a name for himself in audience recordings around Seattle, but he was also a recorder who left countless masterpieces on FM broadcast air checks. LED ZEPPELIN, THE WHO, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, CSN & Y, Joni Mitchell and more. His master is known as the best recording of the 70’s. This work is one of the inscriptions directly raised from the 10.5-inch master reel, which is Mr. Gutsky’s relic.
In fact, the sound is the highest ever. It’s a monaural recording, and it’s not as official as “SAUSALITO 1973”, which has super high sound quality, but it’s the individuality of the broadcast itself. In addition to the sound board that is already at zero distance / close contact, you can feel the closed room feeling because it is a studio live. Even the electromagnetic noise of gee that the amplifier spits out when there is no sound is clear, and you can enjoy the feeling of synchronization that makes your mind feel like a broadcast song itself.
Robin’s enthusiastic performance, which had just achieved his independence, was poured into his brain with the super direct sound. The set may be the same as “SAUSALITO 1973” up to the song order, but here, let’s rearrange it while comparing it with another classic, the professional shot work “BATACLAN 1973”.

I feel that it is not enough for a live performance, but this is just one LP. In other words, it is also a studio album that pushed the two early masterpieces into one and exploded with live performance tension.
The first thing you should experience is the stereo broadcast “SAUSALITO 1973”, but this work is also a sequel album that has updated the highest peak ever. The design of Mr. Stan Gutsky, who launched the prestigious “JEMS”. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

これが「北米#1」の全21公演。シアトル放送の本作はローカル局のせいか『SAUSALITO 1973』ほど有名ではなかったのですが、同じくラジオ出演のスタジオ・ライヴ。しかも２日後という直近の姉妹録音なのです。そして、本作はそんなスタジオ・ライヴの最高峰盤。かの名門「JEMS」から発表されたマスターなのですが、そもそも録音したのも「JEMS」の創設スタッフの１人である故スタン・グトスキー氏。彼自身がシアトル周辺のオーディエンス録音で名を馳せる名テーパーでもありましたが、さらにFM放送のエアチェックでも無数の名作を遺した記録家でもありました。LED ZEPPELINやTHE WHO、ブルース・スプリングスティーン、デヴィッド・ボウイ、CSN&Y、ジョニ・ミッチェル等々。彼のマスターは、70年代のベスト録音として知られているほど。本作は、そんなグトスキー氏の遺品である10.5インチのマスター・リールからダイレクトに起こされた銘品中の銘品なのです。
実際、そのサウンドは過去最高。モノラル録音ですし、さすがに超高音質の『SAUSALITO 1973』ほどオフィシャル然としてはいませんが、それは放送自体の個性。ただでさえゼロ距離／ド密着なサウンドボードに加え、スタジオ・ライヴだからこその密室感までしっかりと感じられる。無音時にアンプが吐き出すジーという電磁ノイズさえ克明で、まさに頭の中が放送曲そのものになったようなシンクロ感を味わえるのです。
その超ダイレクト・サウンドで脳みそに流し込まれるのは、独り立ちを果たしたばかりのロビンの大熱演。セットは『SAUSALITO 1973』と曲順まで同一だったりしますが、ここではもう１つの定番、プロショット作『BATACLAN 1973』と比較しながら整理し直しておきましょう。
