Ritchie Blackmore in 1997, when RAINBOW in the 90’s ended and he washed his feet from hard rock. This week, two collections will be released at the same time to mark the countdown of the end.
This work is the first release of two 1997 collections at the same time. This is an excellent audience recording of “February 22, 1997 West Springfield Performance”. RAINBOW in the 90’s, which started with Doogie White in 1995, conducted world tours mainly in Europe, but it wasn’t until 1997, just before the dissolution, that he moved to North America. Let’s leave the collection arrangement of the last tour to the explanation of “TORONTO 1997 (Shades 1380)” which will be released at the same time, and let’s review the whole activity here.

This is the whole picture of RAINBOW in the 90’s. Basically, they were active with the same five people as the performance in Japan, but only in 1997, the drummer changed to John Miceli. It collapsed after a medium-sized North American tour and a Danish festival appearance. This work is the beginning of such an end. It was the third concert of the “North America” ​​leg.
This work, which is a vacuum-packed version of such a show, is an excellent recording with a powerful core direct feeling. The sound is like an audience recording with vivid singing and cheering, but its vividness is line-class. The clear outline of both vocals and guitar is beautiful, and even whispering tones are clear. On the contrary, the luster that does not vibrate even if it explodes in Fortissimo is also wonderful. The feeling of a closed room unique to a club, or the feeling that “RAINBOW is in front of you” is strong.
And the biggest beauty of this work is the drum sound. This is already super delicate, vivid and powerful! There is no doubt that if the bass wasn’t off, it would be remastered and pressed. It’s such a fine recording, “There’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s already a chot!” Moreover, this drum sound fits perfectly with the significance of the show. As mentioned above, this work is a show immediately after the drummer was replaced by Miceli. For that reason, it is in a growth process that is still unfamiliar.
Please do not read “growth process” as “gudaguda / boring”. It’s true that the ensemble’s breathing feeling is still a long way off, but on the contrary, the hustle (dead language) that seems to be a newcomer is amazing. While trying out his own fill with each song, he has a lot of enthusiasm to let Ritchie and fans recognize it. Especially delicious is the crash of hardware. It’s as dramatic and powerful as Cozy Powell.
And, maybe Ritchie was enthusiastic about the enthusiasm of Miceli. He also performed the rare “Hall of the Mountain King” in 1997, and not only the promised “Burn” but also “Woman From Tokyo”, “OJ (Hey Joe)” and “Smoke On The Water”. Finally, let’s organize such a full set.

本作は、1997年コレクション２本同時リリースの第一弾。「1997年２月22日ウェスト・スプリングフィールド公演」の絶品オーディエンス録音です。1995年にドゥギー・ホワイトを迎えて始動した90年代RAINBOWはヨーロッパを中心にワールドツアーを実施しましたが、北米に渡ったのは解散間際の1997年になってからでした。最後のツアーのコレクション整理は同時リリースとなる『TORONTO 1997（Shades 1380）』の解説に譲り、ここでは活動全像からおさらいしておきましょう。

これが90年代RAINBOWの全体像。基本的には来日公演と同じ５人で活動していましたが、最後の1997年だけはドラマーがジョン・ミセリにチェンジ。中規模の北米ツアーとデンマークのフェス出演をこなして崩壊しました。本作は、そんな終わりの始まり。「北米」レッグの３公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウを真空パックした本作は、力強い芯のダイレクト感が凄い絶品録音。唱和や喝采も生々しいオーディエンス録音らしいサウンドなのですが、その鮮やかさはライン級。ヴォーカルもギターもクッキリとした輪郭が美しく、囁くようなトーンまでハッキリ。逆にフォルテッシモに炸裂してもビビることのない艶やかさも見事。クラブならではの密室感と言いますか、「RAINBOWが目の前にいる」感が強烈なのです。
そして、本作最大の美点はドラム・サウンド。これがもう、超繊細でビビッドでパワフル！　これでベースがオフ気味でなかったらリマスターしてプレス化……となったのは間違いない。そんな「悪いところはないけど、もうチョット！」な佳作録音なのです。しかも、このドラム・サウンドがショウの意義にもばっちりフィットしている。前述の通り、本作はドラマーがミセリに交代した直後のショウ。それだけにまだまだ馴染みきっていない成長過程にあるのです。
「成長過程」を「グダグダ／つまらない」とは読まないでいただきたい。確かにアンサンブルの呼吸感はまだまだなのですが、逆に新人らしいハッスル（死語）ぶりが凄いのです。各曲で自分なりのフィルを試しつつ、リッチーやファンに認めさせようという意気込みがたっぷり。特に美味しいのが金物のクラッシュ。まるでコージー・パウエルのようにドラマティックに、パワフルにバシャバシャとキメまくってくれるのです。
そして、そんなミセリの熱演に感じ入ったのか、リッチーも気合いたっぷり。1997年では珍しい「Hall of the Mountain King」も演奏し、さらにアンコールもお約束の「Burn」だけでなく「Woman From Tokyo」「OJ (Hey Joe)」「Smoke On The Water」とたっぷり。最後に、そんなフルセットの整理もしておきましょう。

1997年というとバンドの状態を反映するように調子の良し悪しが分かれるようになっていきましたが、その序盤は「良し」の方だった。こなれてはいないものの、新編成による再スタートの熱気が現場を包み込む素晴らしいフルショウ。そんなクラブの現場を密着体験できるライヴアルバムです。激レア曲や頂点クオリティではないものの、燃えるリッチーを１公演でも多く聴きたい因果な諸兄には欠かせない１本。どうぞ、じっくりとご堪能ください。
