このように、本作のビーティッヒハイム＝ビッシンゲン公演は、２公演目にして初日ローレライ公演の翌日。先日ご紹介したプレス２CD『LORELEY 2016（Black Box 003）』の続編にあたるライヴ・セットです。
まず、ディスク１・２に収められている「RECORDER 1」は、ギフト・アルバム『MONSTERS OF ROCK: BIETIGHEIM-BISSINGEN 2016』でもご紹介した録音。それをデジタル・リマスタリングで磨き上げました。元音源からして『LORELEY 2016』に迫る極太のサウンドが魅力でしたが、本作ではさらにヌケを良くし、輝く楽音を際立たせました。もちろん、楽音の機微を潰すような野暮はしておりません。今回のRAINBOWはBLACKMORE’S NIGHTと同様の低出力アンプのせいか、ギター・サウンドのエッジが埋もれがちなのですが、わずかなピッキング・ニュアンスも大切にしながら引き出し、サッと晴れ渡った青空のように鮮やか。DEEP PURPLEから歴代RAINBOW、BLACKMORE’S NIGHTに至るまで、リッチーの全キャリアを手がけてきた当店だからこそのベスト・サウンドを実現したのです。
代わってのディスク３・４の「RECORDER 2」は、同じライヴの別録音。こちらもまた素晴らしいクオリティでして、極太のダイレクト感、クリアさはディスク１・２にも負けていない。その上でグッと突きつけてくるようなサウンドは、非常に現代的で全楽器がビビッド。特に素晴らしいのは低音で、豊かなベースやバスドラが腹に響きつつ、割れる寸前のド迫力で轟くのです。強いアタック感が好悪を分けかねないのでディスク３・４に回しましたが、これまたプレスせずにはいられない貴重なライヴアルバムです。
そして、そんなクオリティで描かれる“第２夜”こそが永久保存もの。何よりも注目なのが「Sixteenth Century Greensleeves」。先日のギフト盤でもご説明しましたが、今回の３公演は基本的に共通セットリストだったものの、２日目・３日目には“１回こっきり”の特別曲もあった。整理しますと……

このように「Sixteenth Century Greensleeves」は、この日だけの特別曲だったわけです。しかも、その演奏ぶりがまた良い。BLACKMORE’S NIGHTでも演奏してきた曲のせいか、リッチーもノビノビと弾いており、カッティングだけで聴かせる前半から“らしさ”全開。そこから滑らかなソロに移るダイナミズム、トロけるようなトーン。オリジナルの再現を微塵も考えず、曲の上で自在に遊ぶリッチー節の真骨頂が味わえるのです。もちろん、他の曲でも活き活きとしたギターがたっぷり。初日ローレライ公演では“19年ぶりのロック”の緊張感がモロに出てしまいましたが、２日目の本作はグッと自然な弾きっぷり。わずか一晩明けただけにも関わらず、“ロックのカン”を取り戻しつつあるとは……。やはり「３回と言わず、もっと続けてくれ！」と願わずにはいられません。
その逆に、やや精彩を欠くのが新ヴォーカルのロニー・ロメロでしょうか。巷で“新生RAINBOW最大の収穫”とも言われるだけあって、その歌いっぷりは非常に見事。ただ「Sixteenth Century Greensleeves」を初め、何曲かでは最高音で掠れ、歌いきれないシーンも散見します。もっとも、それも非常に高度な次元の話で、本作にしても（リッチー以外の）他メンバーさえ霞ませる大活躍には変わりありません。

たった３公演の“21世紀RAINBOW”。この夢に“続き”があるのか分かりませんが、夢は確かに現実になった。その第２夜にして、一度きりの「Sixteenth Century Greensleeves」も眩しい４枚組。現存するフル録音を最高上級に磨き上げた逸品。どうぞ、たっぷりとお楽しみください。
