さらに同時期、RAINBOWでも初めてとなるフルレンスの公式ライヴ・ビデオ作品も製作されました。それが「LIVE BETWEEN THE EYES」です。「STRAIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES」リリース後のアメリカツアーを収めたこの作品は、メタルが人気を集めつつあった’82年という時代性を背景に、アメリカでも特にメタル人気が高かったテキサスという土地柄もあって、RAINBOWの公式作品中でもとりわけエンターテイメント性に富んでいます。日本国内でも早い段階でビデオがリリースされ、その後も再リリース（およびDVD化）が行われた事もあり、ファンにとってもお馴染みの存在。同じジョー時代のビデオ作品でも1984年の日本武道館公演が、長い廃盤状態やバンド解散の印象から「陰」の印象があるのに対し、派手さと人口への膾炙度が高いこの「LIVE BETWEEN THE EYES」はまさに「陽」と言いうる、対照的な位置づけにあります。

前述したように「LIVE BETWEEN THE EYES」は当時のVHS版に始まり、現在では公式DVDが存在しています。この両者は同じマスターを用いており、映像や音声は基本的に一緒。映像には波形状のノイズが所々で認められる上に、音質的にも「優れている」とは言いにくい内容でした。しかし’90年代にリリースされたレーザーディスク版は、こういった映像上のノイズがクリアされていたほか、既発とカメラ・アングルに違いがあり、大きな特徴となっていました。ファンの間でも「レーザーディスク版のほうが画質に優れ、ショットにも迫力がある」と定評なのですが、残念なことにこのレーザーディスク版は20年以上も廃盤であり、現在ではほとんど観られなくなっていました。
今回は1984年の日本武道館ライヴと併せ、このレーザーディスク版「LIVE BETWEEN THE EYES」も完全復刻しました！　マスターに用いたのはもちろん状態最良の国内版レーザーディスク！　現在の公式DVDと見比べても、画質は明らかに（それも格段に）上であり、圧縮のないリニアPCMで収録されたサウンドも素晴らしいの一言。さらに現行DVDとは異なるカメラ・アングルで収録されたリッチーのギター・クラッシュも圧巻！　熱心なRAINBOWファンであればあるほど、手元でコレクションせねばならない一本だと断言します！

舞台となった1982年サン・アントニオのイメージ・ショットをイントロに、ギターが暗闇から突き出されるオープニングから映像はスタート。幕開けの「Over The Rainbow」そして「Spotlight Kid」の突進するような勢いは、当時のRAINBOWならでは。躍動感あふれるリッチーのギタープレイと（カメラを意識しているであろう）アクションは、現在の私たちが観ても惹き込まれてしまいます。さらにジョーやディヴィッド・ローゼンタールの若々しいルックス、ダンディなロジャー・グローヴァーの佇まい、ショウアップされたボビー・ロンディネリのドラムなど、音源だけでは味わえないライヴ映像の魅力をたっぷりと味わえます（その「Spotlight Kid」では、アルバム・カヴァーを模した大きな両目の舞台装置も見どころでしょう）。重厚なキーボード・イントロとパワフルな演奏が魅力の「Miss Mistreated」では、ロジャーと戯れるリッチーの楽しげな様子もポイント。リッチーはソロ，バッキングでもグルーヴィなプレイを聴かせます。リッチーは続く「Can’t Happen Here」でも終始乗りに乗ったプレイを連発。アクティヴな曲想に載せて派手なアクションを随所で魅せてくれます。同曲ではロジャーのプレイも見逃せません。さらにメロディアスでムーディな「Tearin’ Out My Heart」は、リッチーのエモーショナルなプレイが堪らない。後半の爆発するような盛り上がりでは、バンドも一体となって素晴らしい演奏を作り上げています。
「All Night Long」のイントロで演奏される「Lazy」や「Woman From Tokyo」ほか、「Stone Cold」に先立つキーボードソロで取り上げられる「Child In Time」のように、第二期DEEP PURPLEナンバーが散りばめられるのも’82年ライヴの面白さ。これらで観客が大いに沸く場面を見ると、同時期からDEEP PURPLE再結成の機運が高まっていたというのも頷けます。この「Stone Cold」と「Power」は、公式作品「FINYL VINYL」でも親しまれていますが、本作収録のサウンドは公式盤を凌駕する切れ味と厚みのある音色で楽しめます。
「Difficult To Cure」そしてギターソロから続くボビーのドラムソロは、音源だけでは飛ばしてしまいそうな場面ですが、この映像ならば話が別。素手でのプレイや、観客を巧みに引っ張り込むアクション、見事な放物線を描くスティック飛ばし、締めくくりに叩く背後のドラなどなど、全てが見どころと言って差し支えない。いかにも’80年代的ではあるのですが、だからこそ私たちロック・ファンの琴線に触れるのでしょう！
そして最大の見せ場にしてクライマックスが、「Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll」の後で繰り広げられるリッチーのギター・クラッシュ！　先に述べたとおり、ここは現行版の公式DVDと比べ、カメラ・アングルやカット割りに大きな相違が観られます。この当時のギター・クラッシュはショウの一部として演出されてはいるものの、それがエンターテイメント性豊かな本映像には上手くフィットしているのも事実。さらに細かいカット割りや、ステージ直下、リッチーのすぐ近くから撮影されたショットは迫力満点です。
ラストは曲想どおりスモークを漂わせた中で「Smoke On The Water」が繰り出され、ライヴは大きな盛り上がりに包まれたままエンディングへとひた走る。ここではステージに投げ込まれたフリスビーを使ってギターを弾くリッチーの姿を見られるなど、最後まで飽きを覚えさせません！

この1982年サン・アントニオ公演は、「記録」としてはもちろん、ファンの「記憶」へと強烈に残るライヴと言えるでしょう。メタルが全盛へと向かいつつある1982年、アメリカのメタル先進地区テキサスで繰り広げられた、派手でエネルギッシュなRAINBOWライヴ･･････この75分間はファンが後世へと語り継ぎたい「ロックの文化遺産」なのです！
