December 2021 is the 45th anniversary of the legendary first visit to Japan. A special album that seems to commemorate the anniversary year is now available on the Permanent Preservation Press 2CD.
The special edition contains the performance of “December 16, 1976: Nippon Budokan (night section)”. Yes, this is the 45th anniversary special edition of the stereo sound board album “DEFINITIVE ON STAGE” that made the dream of a maniac a reality! For those who have paid attention to this article, you may know the contents because it is a blockbuster title that is rarely seen even in RAINBOW relations. However, we will start from the basics so that even those who have not experienced it can understand it because it is the best one for beginners.
“December 16: Nippon Budokan (night section)” is the final performance that should be commemorated even for the legendary first visit to Japan. It is a masterpiece that has been adopted in the masterpiece “ON STAGE” and has been handed down in many excellent audience recordings. On the other hand, this show is also famous for having many sound boards left behind. “DEFINITIVE ON STAGE” is a live album that realizes the longest version with the highest quality by making full use of the highest master among them. That said, I’m not using all the remaining soundboards. First, let’s organize the sound board that recorded this day.

As mentioned above, 5 types of sound boards still exist. Speaking of the highest quality among them, “SBD # 5 (the official version is credited as Osaka, but the correct one is Nippon Budokan)”. As it was officially excavated, the official quality, which was precisely mixed from the multi, was tremendous. However, unfortunately it was not a full recording. Maybe it was to fit on one CD, or maybe there was something wrong with the master, the latter half of the show (keyboard / drum solo / Still I’m Sad part from Stargazer) was an incomplete version that was cut off. “DEFINITIVE ON STAGE” fills the missing part with “SBD # 2” of Cozy Tape as much as possible. In addition, a few minutes without a sound board (Over The Rainbow, which announces the end and end of the drum solo) was complemented with the finest audience recording to make it the longest full live album.
The “Complete Edition ON STAGE” that was born in this way was sold out and out of print in no time. The remastered version, which was released in less than a year, was a huge hit and quickly disappeared from the market. This work is the latest and highest peak of such a popular board. In commemoration of the 45th anniversary, I tried to remaster again, but this time the point is the accuracy of obsession. The pitch and phase of the previous remastered “Rising Arrow-064” were also perfect, and it was a high-dimensional finish that would normally be irreplaceable. In order to upgrade from there, we challenged noise reduction this time. Of course, normal mechanical noise reduction will reduce the subtleties of the playing sound, and the tone will also change. Therefore, this time, I pursued “the last minute that does not affect the playing sound”. Find and fine-tune the noise hidden behind the playing sound, such as high-frequency hiss noise and low-frequency hum noise. However, if the performance sound changed even a little, I tried again … I refined it with a paranoid work.
As a result, the sound produced is certainly the highest ever. It’s hard to say that the official part of “ON STAGE” Dela Eddie (mainly the first half) has changed significantly, but the cozy tape part (second half) is clearly different. Even if you just listen to it, the hiss called “Sir” is considerably reduced, and you can’t feel the ham called “Boon” that you can barely notice at a loud volume. Only the miracle masterpiece stands out from the jet-black silence.
You don’t have to talk much about the content of the show. That full show that should be called the essence of British hard rock. The highest-ever stereo sound board is poured into the brain of a famous performance that has been repeated hundreds and thousands. I’m planning to check the sound of the upgraded version so far, but before I knew it, it was incorporated into the performance and it became “The final of Budokan is amazing”. You can enjoy that real thrill again.
As we celebrate the 45th anniversary of our first visit to Japan, we have done everything possible in 2021. Since it is a noise reduction that has attacked to the very limit, it may be better to say “I have investigated to the top of the needle tip” rather than “I was reborn as a different thing”. However, the more you challenge it, the more valuable the album “DEFINITIVE ON STAGE” is. The ideal of British hard rock, the dream crystal of a maniac. ★ The longest stereo sound board recording of “1976 December 16th: Nippon Budokan (night section)”. It is the highest peak update version of “DEFINITIVE ON STAGE:” that combines the official SBD of “ON STAGE” deluxe edition and the SBD tape of Cozy Powell’s treasury. Even the conventional version was excellent enough, but this work challenges the noise reduction of the last minute that the performance sound does not change. The hiss in the high range and the hum in the low range have been significantly reduced, and the thick sound board sound has been realized with a clear and sharp sound. This is the ultimate live album to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the first visit to Japan.

伝説の初来日から45周年を迎えた2021年の師走。アニバーサリー・イヤーを記念するかのような特別アルバムが永久保存プレス２CDで登場です。
その特別版に封じられているのは「1976年12月16日：日本武道館（夜の部）」公演。そう、マニアの夢をカタチにしたステレオサウンドボード・アルバム『DEFINITIVE ON STAGE』の45周年特別版です！ RAINBOW関係でも記念希に見る大ヒット・タイトルだけに、本稿に目を留めた方なら内容はご存知かもしれません。しかし、入門用にも最適な１本だけに未体験の方にもご理解頂けるよう、基本から始めさせて頂きます。
「12月16日：日本武道館（夜の部）」は、伝説の初来日でも記念すべき最終公演。名盤『ON STAGE』にも採用され、数々の極上オーディエンス録音でも伝えられてきた名演中の名演です。その一方で、このショウは多数のサウンドボードが残された事でも有名。『DEFINITIVE ON STAGE』とはその中でも最高峰のマスターを駆使し、最高峰クオリティで最長版を実現したライヴアルバムなのです。とは言え、残されたサウンドボードを全部使っているわけでもない。まずは、この日を記録したサウンドボードを整理してみましょう。

以上、５種類のサウンドボードが現存しています。この中でも最高峰クオリティと言えば「SBD#5（公式盤には大阪とクレジットされていますが、正しくは日本武道館です）」。オフィシャル発掘されただけあってマルチから精緻にミックスされた文字通りの公式クオリティは絶大でした。しかし、惜しむらくはフル収録ではなかった。CD１枚に収めるためなのか、はたまたマスターに不備があったのか、ショウの後半（Stargazerからキーボード/ドラムソロ/Still I’m Sadパート）がバッサリとカットされた不完全版だったのです。『DEFINITIVE ON STAGE』は、その欠けパートをコージー・テープの「SBD#2」で可能な限り補填。さらにサウンドボードが存在しない数分間（ドラムソロ終盤と終演を告げるOver The Rainbow）を極上オーディエンス録音で補完して最長フル・ライヴアルバムに仕上げたものなのです。
こうして誕生した「完全版ON STAGE」はあっと言う間に完売・廃盤。１年を待たずにリリースされたリマスター・バージョンも大ヒットで瞬く間に市場から姿を消してしまいました。本作は、そんな大人気盤の最新・最高峰盤なのです。45周年を記念するにあたって再度のリマスターに挑戦したわけですが、今回のポイントは執念の精度。前回のリマスター盤『Rising Arrow-064』もピッチや位相は完璧で、普通なら手の加えようがない高次元の仕上がりでした。そこからアップグレードを図るため、今回挑戦したのはノイズ・リダクション。もちろん、通常の機械的なノイズ・リダクションでは演奏音の機微まで削ってしまいますし、音色も変化してしまいます。そこで、今回は「演奏音に影響しないギリギリ」を追究しました。高周波のヒスノイズや低域のハムノイズなど、演奏音の影に隠れていたノイズも見つけ出しては微調整。でも、ちょっとでも演奏音が変質したらやり直し……という偏執狂的な作業で磨き上げていったのです。
その結果、生まれたサウンドは確かに過去最高。さすがに『ON STAGE』デラエディの公式パート（主に前半）は大きく変化したとは言いがたいのですが、コージーテープ・パート（後半）は明らかに違う。パッと聴いただけでも「サーッ」というヒスがかなり軽減され、大音量でやっと気づく程度だった「ブーン」というハムも感じられない。奇跡の名演だけが漆黒の無音部からそそり立っているのです。
ショウ内容に関しては多くを語る必要もないでしょう。英国ハードロックの粋とも言うべき、あのフルショウ。何百・何千と繰り返してきた大名演を過去最高峰のステレオ・サウドボードが脳みそに流し込まれる。これまでものアップグレード盤も音の確認のつもりが、いつの間にか演奏に取り込まれて「やっぱ武道館最終は凄いわ」なってしまう。あの醍醐味をまた味わえるのです。
初来日45周年を迎えるにあたり、2021年に可能な事をやり尽くしました。ギリのギリッギリまで攻めたノイズ・リダクションですから「まるで別物に生まれ変わった」と言うよりは「針先の頂点まで究めた」と言った方が良いかもしれません。しかし、それに挑戦するほど『DEFINITIVE ON STAGE』は価値のあるアルバムなのです。英国ハードロックの理想にして、マニアの夢の結晶。どうぞ、永久保存プレス２CDでとことん味わい尽くしてください。
