まずは、「1981年5月7日ボストン公演」の音源史から。よーくご存じの方は軽く読み飛ばしてください。このボストン公演は“KING BISCUIT FLOWER HOUR”で別ライヴ(5月2日ロングアイランド公演)との混ぜて放送され、アナログ時代から「THE SOURCE」「ELECTRIFIED」等の名盤を生んできた有名音源。現在でこそ、いくつかのサウンドボードが発掘されていますが、当時は“唯一無二のサウンドボード”であり、長年にわたって愛され続けてきた定番中の定番なのです。その長い歴史において幾多の既発が「いかに放送そのものに近づけるか」をテーマにジェネレーションを競ってきたわけですが、その競争原理を根底から覆したのが、2009年に突如発表された「ULTIMATE SURRENDER」だったのです。なにしろ、幾多のエアチェックとはまったく違う関係者流出音源なのですから、放送原盤さえも超えてジェネレーションも度外視。それどころか放送ミックスですらなく、ショウの頭から終わりまでボストン公演で統一され、初登場となるテイクも盛りだくさん。序盤「Love’s No Friend」のほか、ディスク1ラストの「Can’t Happen Here」からクライマックスの「Drum Solo」まで、ショウの大半が「ULTIMATE SURRENDER」で初めて世に出た録音でした。もちろん、史上初の完全無欠“DIFFICULT TO CURE TOUR 1981”サウンドボード・アルバム誕生の衝撃は凄まじく、あっという間に完売。長らく入手困難になっているのです。
本作は、その原音を最新リマスターで蘇らせたもの。なにしろ“DIFFICULT TO CURE TOUR 1981”の頂点サウンドボードですから、その意義は公式作品「LIVE BETWEEN THE EYES」「JAPAN TOUR ’84」とさえ伍する。たとえアンダーグラウンド音源を知らない人にでも通じるパーフェクトな形にしなければなりません。そこで、原音ではわずかに感じられた高音の歪みを補正し、低音とのバランスを調整。卓流出らしい生々しさが先立つ「ULTIMATE SURRENDER」から、より“公式代わり”に相応しいサウンドの生まれ変わったのです。もちろん、歓声がほぼ皆無なところはそのままですので完全な公式仕様とはいきませんが、克明に切り立ちながら理想バランスとなった楽音は、完璧にオフィシャルとして通用するクオリティに仕上がりました。
公式作品とさえ並べて語られるべきクオリティで蘇った“DIFFICULT TO CURE TOUR 1981”のパフォーマンスは、ジョー時代でも屈指の素晴らしさ。「Over The Rainbow」が長かったり、「Spotlight Kid」「Difficult To Cure」がアルバムに近かったりといった細かいアレンジも後年とは違いますが、それ以上にフレッシュなパフォーマンスが眩しい。なにしろ“DIFFICULT TO CURE TOUR 1981”は、バンドの大改造しての初ツアー。しかも、このボストン公演は43公演目にあたる北米レッグの最終盤(ワールドツアー全体ではほぼ真ん中)であり、新鮮さもたっぷりながら新バンドのコンビネーションもこなれてきた美味しいタイミング。全米各地を巡りながら確かな手応えを掴みつつあった充実の演奏なのです。
その上で、セットリストも“STRAIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES TOUR 1982”・“BENT OUT OF SHAPE TOUR 1983-1984”とは違う旨みがたっぷり。後年はジョー時代のレパートリーが増えていきましたが、ここではロニー時代の「Man On The Silver Mountain」、グラハム時代の「Love’s No Friend」「Lost In Hollywood」も演奏され、まさに各シンガーの時代を超えたベスト選曲なのです。
そのベスト選曲の組み込んだショウの構成も美味しい。大ざっぱに3つのパートで構成されており、前半部は開演からディスク2冒頭の「Can’t Happen Here」まで、新曲を交えながら各時代の濃縮ベスト選曲が次々と披露される。それも単なるシングル曲の集合ではなく、ブルージー、ポップ、ロック、バラードと、1曲ごとに色合いをコロコロと変えて飽きさせないのです。
ショウ後半部は一転して、キーボードソロから始まる大メドレー。合間に「Lost In Hollywood」「A Light In The Black」「Difficult To Cure」を挟みながらギターソロやドラムソロをたっぷりと、スポンティニアスに聴かせてくれる。後年になるにつれてコンパクトな楽曲を数多く演奏することに重点が置かれますが、この長い長いメドレータイムは、それまでのRAINBOWカラーそのもの。ドン・エイリーのカラフルなソロもあり、“英国HRバンド”の矜持が色濃く残っているのです。
そして、最後はお楽しみタイム。本編セット最後の「Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll」の大団円に加え、衝撃のDEEP PURPLEアンコール! ついに解禁された「Smoke On The Water」だけでなく、冒頭に「Lazy」「Woman From Tokyo」のフレーズを交え、このときだけ紫色に仕上げてショウは終わります。明確な三部構成となっているわけではありませんが、コントラストの効いたショウ構成は、まさにRAINBOWらしいものなのです。

ジョー・リン・ターナー時代のスタジオ作は3枚。しかし、オフィシャルのライヴ作品は2つ。唯一、公式から忘れられている“DIFFICULT TO CURE TOUR 1981”をオフィシャルレベルで伝えてくれる無二のパーフェクトなサウンドボード・アルバムです。これだけの大名盤は限られた人間だけのものであってはならない。最高だからこそ、極限まで高めなければいけない。その2つの理想を追い求めたアップグレード復活盤、堂々の登場です。
