QUEEN in 1975 brought out the historical masterpiece “Night at the Opera” that rewrote rock history. Another sound testimony is born that tells the scene of Britain, the epicenter of the revolution.
“December 16, 1975 Glasgow performance” is imbued in this work. It is the vintage audience recording. Speaking of 1975, it is the time when “SHEER HEART ATTACK Tour” and “A NIGHT AT THE OPERA Tour” intersect, but this work is the latter. First of all, let’s look back at the whole view of the world tour and check the position of the show.

●1975
《August-November “A Night at the Opera” production》
・November 14-December 24: UK (25 performances) ← Coco
● 1976
・ January 27-March 13: North America (34 performances)
・ March 22-April 4: Japan (9 performances)
・ April 11-22: Australia (8 performances)
《Production of “Brilliant Race” started in July》

This is the whole picture of “A NIGHT AT THE OPERA Tour”. Until the first visit to Japan was the “SHEER HEART ATTACK Tour”, after which “A Night at the Opera” was produced. The tour started from the “UK” leg while the single “Bohemian Rhapsody” ran up the charts of each country. At our shop, the official work “A NIGHT AT THE ODEON” was left from this “UK” leg, and we have archived it with various live albums at our shop. Here, let’s zoom in on the schedule further and organize the collection.

● “British” leg details
・November 14th + 15th “A NIGHT AT THE EMPIRE”
・November 16-19 (4 performances)
《November 21 “Night at the Opera” released》
・November 21-24 (3 performances)
・November 26 “RHAPSODY IN WHITE”
・November 29-December 11 (10 performances)
・December 13 “DUNDEE 1975”
・ December 14th + 15th (2 performances)
・December 16: Glasgow performance ← Coco
・ December 24 “A NIGHT AT THE ODEON (Official)”

In this way, the official work “A NIGHT AT THE ODEON” was a Christmas gig on the final day. This work was also the 24th performance concert just before that. This work recorded at such a show is a rare sound source that was said to be a phantom. Although its existence itself has been known for a long time, it was only distributed among core collectors, and for a long time the name in the trade list was seen with a finger in its mouth. However, one of the core collectors has recently been released. Finally got the chance to be heard.
The sound of this work is truly vintage. To be honest, it is undeniable that there is some distance, and there is no scene where lively enthusiasm interrupts the performance. However, its master freshness is excellent. Almost no tape twists or disturbances can be seen, and hiss noise is extremely small. The atmosphere that was floating in the Apollo Theater 47 years ago blows out vividly from the speakers.
If you are familiar with the original sound that appeared on the net here, you may think, “Isn’t it too much praise?”, but there is a reason for that. It is easy to hear and upgraded with our own mastering. Of course, noise processing such as hiss and hum is also applied, but more importantly, it is monaural. Although it is a common pattern in the 70’s recording, this recording was originally monaural. It was dubbed to a stereo cassette and distributed. In such cases, the same sound is recorded on the left and right channels, but differences occur depending on the length of time and the playback environment. This recording was also difficult to hear because the left channel deteriorated in the net original sound. Therefore, in this work, the left and right sides are aligned and completely monaural. The deterioration of both channels is complemented by each other, realizing a sound with outstanding stability.
Such an upgraded sound is reminiscent of “A NIGHT AT THE ODEON” immediately after… on the contrary, it’s a completely different full show. In order to explain the meaning, let’s organize the set while comparing here.

● Sheer Heart Attack (7 songs)
・Flick Of The Wrist(★)/Killer Queen/Bring Back That Leroy Brown/Brighton Rock/Stone Cold Crazy(★)/In The Lap Of The Gods…Revisited/Now I’m Here
● Others (12 songs)
・Dreadful Princess: Son And Daughter/Doing All Right (★)/Keep Yourself Alive/Liar
・Queen II: Ogre Battle / White Queen (As It Began) / The March Of The Black Queen / Seven Seas Of Rhye
・Night at the Opera: Sweet Lady (★)/Bohemian Rhapsody/The Prophet’s Song (★)
・Other: Big Spender
* Note: “★” marks are songs that could not be heard in the official work “A NIGHT AT THE ODEON: HAMMERSMITH 1975”.

… and it looks like this. Unfortunately, the recording of this work ended with “Big Spender”. (Although it can not be determined because there is no other recording, probably) “Jailhouse Rock” is a recording leak, but you can enjoy the whole view other than that. The content is also quite different from “A NIGHT AT THE ODEON”, starting with “Ogre Battle” led by “Bohemian Rhapsody” from the opening. After that, numbers unique to this period such as “Sweet Lady” and “Doing All Right” will be rolled out one after another.
Freddie seems a little tired because of the night after day of the show, but this is also a valuable piece of historical evidence. It is a time machine album that you can witness with real sound in the UK scene where the heat has increased at once after a breakthrough. It’s undeniable that it’s a little maniac, but that’s why maniacs can’t avoid it. In 1975, the scent of the UK only, please inhale it to the fullest with this work.

★ Vintage audience recording of “December 16, 1975 Glasgow Performance”. It is a hidden treasure master that was distributed among core collectors, and although it is somewhat distant, the master freshness is excellent. Furthermore, meticulous mastering has dramatically improved the ease of listening. While it is a concert just before the official “A NIGHT AT THE ODEON”, you can enjoy plenty of “Flick Of The Wrist”, “Doing All Right”, “Sweet Lady”, and “The Prophet’s Song” that you could not hear in the official work.

このように、公式作『A NIGHT AT THE ODEON』は最終日のクリスマス・ギグ。

Flick Of The Wrist(★)/Killer Queen/Bring Back That Leroy Brown/Brighton Rock/Stone Cold Crazy(★)/In The Lap Of The Gods…Revisited/Now I’m Here
Son And Daughter/Doing All Right(★)/Keep Yourself Alive/Liar
II:Ogre Battle/White Queen (As It Began)/The March Of The Black Queen/Seven Seas Of Rhye
Sweet Lady(★)/Bohemian Rhapsody/The Prophet’s Song(★)
Big Spender
※注:「★」印は公式作『A NIGHT AT THE ODEON: HAMMERSMITH 1975』で聴けなかった曲。

その内容も『A NIGHT AT THE ODEON』とはかなり異なっていて、オープニングから「Bohemian Rhapsody」に導かれた「Ogre Battle」からスタート。

公式『A NIGHT AT THE ODEON』の直前コンサートながら、公式作では聞けなかった「Flick Of The Wrist」「Doing All Right」「Sweet Lady」「The Prophet’s Song」などもたっぷり楽しめます。
