『HOT SAPCE』時代の日本公演を代表してきた名録音が最高峰クオリティで登場です。本作に収められているのは「1982年10月26日:名古屋国際展示場」公演。その極上オーディエンス録音です。
気になる内容ですが、まずはショウのポジション。1982年の日本公演と言えば公式映像『LIVE IN JAPAN』も象徴的ですが、それも含めて日程の中で確認してみましょう。

以上、全6公演。本作の名古屋公演は、福岡→神戸と東進してきた4公演目にあたります。そんなショウを収めた本作は、再生の瞬間から既発とは明らかに違う。『FIREDANCE』も「Flash」のビートが流れ出す直前からショウを完全収録していましたが、本作はさらに1分半前から聴ける。これがまた、実に良いムード。ちょうど開演の雰囲気を察した観客が沸き上がる直前からでして、グッと上がる会場の気温がリアル。手拍子の数と強さに熱が籠もり、うねりのようなどよめきが広がる。会場中から飛び交う声は上気しており、興奮して「柴田! 森山ひ○し!」と友人(?)の名を叫ぶ不思議な人までいる。そこにスペーシーで厳かなシンセがズンズンズンズン……と鳴り響き、「Flash!」の一声で会場が沸騰するのです。
その沸騰が爆発に変わる「Rock It」に至ったところで、名録音の本領発揮。熱い熱狂もリアルなオーディエンス録音には違いないのですが、そのド真ん中を突っ切ってくる演奏と歌声の素晴らしい事! ロウジェネならではの歪みのない真っ直ぐな芯はレーザー光線のように鋭く、ビビリも回り込みも感じさせない空気感は透き通っており、芯に見目麗しい艶を与えこそすれディテールを隠さない。「まるでサウンドボード」と呼ぶタイプともちょっと違うのですが、逞しい演奏音が観客を駆り立て、その熱狂がフレディの歌声を邪魔しない。リアリティとクリアさ、美しさと熱さ。ともすれば相反しかねない要素が互いを盛り上げる。シンプルに高音質でありながら、それ以上の聴き応えの詰まったオーディエンス録音の見本となる名録音。しかも、ショウが進むほどに僅かなヒス・ノイズも綺麗に消え去り、どんどん良くなっていくのです。
そして、そのサウンドで描かれるショウこそは聴きどころの連続。前述の「Rock It」もそうですが、さらに「Action This Day」「Calling All Girls」「Put Out The Fire」「Body Language」といった『HOT SAPCE』ナンバーを畳みかける前半のフレッシュなこと! 前述のように、1982年のジャパンツアーは『LIVE IN JAPAN』にもなっているわけですが、この序盤シーンは大きくカットされていた。もちろん、序盤だけでなく中盤の「Get Down, Make Love」「Body Language」「Fat Bottomed Girls」や終盤の「Another One Bites The Dust」など、『LIVE IN JAPAN』では窺い知れなかった日本演奏がフル体験。特に「Rock It」「Calling All Girls」「Body Language」の3曲は“HOT SPACE TOUR 1982”だけの貴重さだけでなく、『QUEEN ON FIRE』でも聴けない。オフィシャル記録よりの濃厚に“1982年”が薫るのです。
それ以上に、“1982年の名古屋”だけのスペシャルな瞬間だったのが「Teo Torriatte」。「Crazy Little Thing Called Love」のイントロとしてフレディがアコギを片手に唱和を呼ぶのですが、そこには一切の演奏なしの完全アカペラ。ただただ呼び水となるフレディの歌声と、それに応える大合唱だけが会場を満たすのです。実のところ、この名古屋公演のフレディは絶好調とは言い難いものの、このアカペラ・バージョンはQUEEN全史でもこの日、この会場でした実現しなかった。そんな一期一会の刹那にクリアでリアルな極上サウンドで立ち会えるのです。

Demos and Outtakes of “Hot Space”, “Miracle” and “Innuendo” STEREO SBD

Main press 2CD is a masterpiece of a live album where you can taste plenty of unique songs of 1982. To that bonus, we prepared three late-stage demonstration albums such as “THE MIRACLE” and “INNUENDO” with “HOT SPACE” as the lead. It is contained in this work is 19 songs + α, which is the best sounding hidden track such as three outtakes and unreleased songs. Let’s quickly introduce the contents.

【HOT SPACE DEMOS (7 songs)】
The first thing that appears is “HOT SPACE” outtex. Both are different versions of sound comparable to regular albums. It is primarily a temporary lyric version, “Feel Like” is the initial version of “Under Pressure”.
Of course not only is the vocal take different, plenty of mix and take differences. “Staying Power” is a strong version of rock and color that guitar solo also appears instead of saxophone and horn, “Action This Day” is also longer than synthesizer and horn solo than album. And the biggest attention is “Cool Cat”! David Bowie is the take that was recorded in “HOT SPACE” of the test press board and serves as backing vocal! Of course, it is not chorus which I do not know well, clearly and that beautiful voice can be enjoyed with ear sound.

Next is the outtex of the “THE MIRACLE” session. “My Baby Loves Me” is the initial version of “My Baby Does Me”, “Hang On In There” “Stealin ‘” “Hijack My Heart” is a demo of the single B side song. Especially interesting is “Stealin ‘.” Regular take is about 4 minutes, but the demo version of this work is a long version that goes beyond eleven minutes. Freddie’s vocal melody is scattered like a showcase, but at the same time the idea of ​​backing is also firmly included. It is a take that gives you a glimpse of the possibility of developing into various songs.
“A New Life Is Born” is a part used in the intro of “Breakthru”. In the album, the melody will change, but in this take it will continue as a ballad song as it is. And “Dog With A Bone” is a Muddy Waters style jam that Freddie and Roger duet. It was used for British fan conversation in 1988.
“I Guess We’re Falling Out” which is completely unpublished. Freddie’s piano and vocals are also great impressive ballads. Unfortunately Freddie is a different world without being completed. It is a beautiful and sad exquisite take.

【INNUENDO DEMOS (5 songs)】
The third session is the session of Freddie Life’s last original album “INNUENDO”. In addition to the initial demo of album song “Delilah” “Headlong”, three unreleased songs “My Secret Fantasy”, “Robbery” and “Self Made Man” are included.
It is unpublished song which is still worrisome. Both are incomplete and I can not go as far as “famous masterpieces!”, But it is that egg. First of all, “My Secret Fantasy” was a song that might have been included in “A KIND OF MAGIC”. Although singing melodies such as guide vocals are incomplete, the completeness of the backing is also a high take.
“Robbery” is a heavy guitar song that Brian wrote about it. Arrange is not gathered and it ends with a trailer dragonfly, but the core guitar riff is very cool. Freddie’s singing voice is also included although it is just an idea’s essence. The last “Self Made Man” is an unreleased song featuring Brian and Freddie’s vocals. 本編プレス2CDは、1982年ならではの名曲がたっぷり味わえるライヴアルバムの大傑作。そのボーナスには、『HOT SPACE』を筆頭に『THE MIRACLE』『INNUENDO』といった後期3作のデモ・アルバムをご用意しました。本作に収められているのは3作のアウトテイクや未発表曲など、極上サウンドの秘宝トラックが19曲+α。それでは、早速その中身をご紹介していきましょう。

まず登場するのは『HOT SPACE』のアウトテイクス。いずれも正規アルバムに匹敵するサウンドの別バージョンです。主に仮歌詞バージョンで、「Feel Like」は「Under Pressure」の初期バージョンです。
もちろん、ヴォーカル・テイクが違うだけでなく、ミックスやテイク違いもたっぷり。「Staying Power」はサックスやホーンの代わりにギターソロも登場するロック・カラーの強いバージョンですし、「Action This Day」はシンセサイザーやホーンのソロもアルバムよりも長い。そして、最大の注目は「Cool Cat」! テストプレス盤の『HOT SPACE』に収録されていたテイクで、バッキング・ヴォーカルを務めるのはデヴィッド・ボウイ! もちろん、よく分からないようなコーラスではなく、ハッキリとあの美声が耳元サウンドで楽しめます。

続いては『THE MIRACLE』セッションのアウトテイクス。見慣れない曲名も並びますが、「My Baby Loves Me」は「My Baby Does Me」の初期バージョンで、「Hang On In There」「Stealin’」「Hijack My Heart」はシングルB面曲のデモです。特に面白いのは「Stealin’」。正規テイクは4分ほどですが、本作のデモ・バージョンは11分をゆうに超える長尺版。フレディのヴォーカル・メロディがショウケースのように散りばめられつつ、同時にバッキングのアイディアもしっかりと入っている。さまざまな曲に発展していきそうな可能性が垣間見えるテイクです。
また「A New Life Is Born」は「Breakthru」のイントロで使われたパート。アルバムではガラッと曲調が変わりますが、このテイクではそのままバラード曲として続いていきます。そして、「Dog With A Bone」はフレディとロジャーがデュエットするマディ・ウォーターズっぽいスタイルのジャム。1988年の英国ファン・コンヴェンションのために使用されました。
完全未発表なのは「I Guess We’re Falling Out」。フレディのピアノやヴォーカルも素晴らしい感動のバラード。残念ながら完成することなくフレディは他界。美しくも哀しい絶品のテイクです。

3つめはフレディ生前最後のオリジナルアルバム『INNUENDO』のセッション。アルバム曲「Delilah」「Headlong」の初期デモに加え、未発表の3曲「My Secret Fantasy」「Robbery」「Self Made Man」が収録されています。
やはり気になるのは未発表曲。いずれも未完成であり、“まだ知らぬ名曲!”とまではいきませんが、その卵ではある。まず「My Secret Fantasy」は、『A KIND OF MAGIC』に収録されていたかも知れなかった曲。ガイド・ヴォーカルを想定したような歌メロが未完成ではあるものの、バッキングの完成度も高いテイクです。
「Robbery」はブライアンが書きかけていた思われるヘヴィなギター・ソング。アレンジがまとまっておらず尻切れトンボで終わりますが、核となるギター・リフが非常に格好いい。あくまでもアイディアのとっかかり的ながらフレディの歌声も入っています。最後の「Self Made Man」は、ブライアンとフレディのヴォーカルがフィーチュアされた未発表曲。かなりまとまっているバッキングに乗せてブライアンがメインで歌い、フレディが追いかける感じでデュエットしている。曲の良さもさることながら、2人が創作していく呼吸感が肌感覚で感じられるテイクです。

そして、最後にボーナス収録されているのは「Keep Passing The Open Windows」のデモ。フレディが独りでピアノで弾き語り、アイディアを練っていくホーム・デモです。本来であれば、アルバムの発表順に収録すべきところなのですが、このデモはあまりにもパーソナル感が素晴らしすぎる。最後の最後にフレディの側らに寄り添っていただきたく、ラストに収録いたしました。
