このように、初来日公演は“大阪城ホール”と“横浜スタジアム”で２回ずつの全４公演。本作は、その最初の２公演をフル収録しているわけです。最終公演の『THE FINAL PARADE』は、歴史的名音源さえも霞む凄まじいサウンドで驚かせてくれましたが、本作のクオリティも強烈。実は、本作もまた『THE FINAL PARADE』と同じ録音家の作品。世界初公開のオリジナル・マスターなのです。
そのサウンドは、なんとも美しいオーディエンス録音。楽音自体のクリアさは『THE FINAL PARADE』にも迫りつつ、横浜スタジアムとは違う屋内感覚が素晴らしい。野外会場は遠く遠くへ伸びて消えていくような開放感が特徴ですが、本作は屋内会場ならではの音響感覚が美しいのです。こう書くと「反響ボケボケ」のサウンドをイメージされるかもしれませんが、もちろん、そういうサウンドでは決してない。『THE FINAL PARADE』の楽音は夜空に吸い込まれていくタイプなのに対し、本作のサウンドは真っ直ぐな楽音から残響がうっすらと客席に届く感覚なのです。しかも、そのダイレクト感たるや１万6000人収容の巨大な空間とは思えないほどの直球ぶり。特にディスク３・４のクリアさは「まるでサウンドボード」と呼べるもので、『THE FINAL PARADE』か、本作か、好みでどちらが上になってもおかしくない次元なのです。
そこまでのサウンドでありながら、本作はやはりオーディエンス録音に違いない。うっすらしていても、確実に存在する会場音響の美しさに加え、観客が熱い。なにしろ、マイケル・ジャクソンの“BAD TOUR”やマドンナの“WHO’S THAT GIRL TOUR”よりも早くやってきた、当代きってのスーパー・スター。初めて見る極上エンターテインメントを目の当たりした興奮は半端ではないのです。しかも、当時のプリンスはすでに超人気だったとは言え、マイケルやマドンナのお茶の間人気に比べるとやや“通好み”でもあった。そのせいか、本作に充ち満ちている熱気も「世間で話題だから」というミーハー熱狂とはちょっと違い、「あの曲、この音楽が大好きだから」という洋楽好きならではの熱狂がたっぷりと詰まっている。もちろん、その大歓声、猛烈な手拍子をしっかりと押さえていながらも、それが楽音・歌声の主役ぶりを些かも脅かさない。歴史の空気感・スケール感を味わわせてくれる「記録」ではあるものの、それ以上に極上の「音楽作品」なのです。
そんな空気感は、プリンス側からもたっぷりと感じられる。初のワールドツアーでヨーロッパを制覇してきたわけですが、日本は彼にとって更なる異世界。しかも、この大阪２公演はまったくの“初日本”ですから、英語がどれだけ通じるかも未知。MCも少なめに、ファンのノリを確かめるような手探りの初体験ぶりが透ける。ただ、そこで堅くなってしまわないところがプリンスの凄いところ。言葉の力を借りずともグイグイと客をノセまくり、また猛烈に返す観客のノリも彼に自信を与えていく。普通のアーティストであれば、数公演かけて各国の手応えを感じていくのでしょうが、プリンスは１回のショウのうちに掴みきって大阪城の空間を縦横無尽に支配してしまうのです。さすが天才、さすが時代の寵児です。
そんなショウを支えるセットリストも『1999』『AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY』『PARADE』の３枚を軸に、たっぷりと美味しい曲を披露。１公演ずつの曲数こそ最終日の『THE FINAL PARADE』には及びませんが、それでも１・２曲程度の話ですし、２日間を合計すると最終日以上に多彩。特に初日「９月５日」の「Paisley Park」「Mountains」は『THE FINAL PARADE』では聴けませんし、「Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On」に至っては、初来日でもこの日だけの曲なのです。

初めて日本のステージに立った初日（ディスク１・２）と、歴史的名盤『THE FINAL PARADE』にすら匹敵する極上サウンドの２日目（ディスク３・４）。歴史的な初日本、初大阪の２日間を完璧に収めた大傑作です。生涯で５度の来日と38回のコンサートを残していったプリンス。その第一歩を世界初公開の極上サウンドで捉えきった４枚組。30年後になって明らかになった歴史的な夜、どうぞあなたも立会人になってください。
